Minecraft Spiders: Climbing, Daylight Behavior & Drops Explained
Minecraft spiders are large hostile mobs that can climb walls, leap toward players, and become less aggressive in bright daytime conditions. Their behavior is different from zombies and skeletons, which makes some common base defenses surprisingly ineffective. Spiders can also drop string and spider eyes, both useful beyond combat.
Why spiders attack at night
Spiders typically become aggressive in darker conditions and can attack players at night or in underground spaces. In brighter light, a spider that has not been provoked may appear calm. However, brightness is not a magic way to cancel an existing fight: if you attack a spider, it can continue to retaliate.
A spider nearby during daytime is not necessarily safe to hit. Give it space, especially when a cliff or lava pool is behind you. In caves, treat spiders as a full threat regardless of the time shown above ground.
Can Minecraft spiders climb walls?
Yes. Spiders can climb many vertical surfaces, making a simple waist-high wall or ordinary fence line less dependable than it might be against some other mobs. A wall with a projecting overhang helps prevent them climbing directly over. Enclosed roofs also keep them from dropping into a courtyard.
Think about the full perimeter, not just the front door. A spider may climb the outside of a small house and reach an open roof. If you hear movement above, check the roof and any neighboring blocks before stepping outside.
How to fight spiders safely
Their wide bodies make spiders easy to see, but quick lunges can catch a player who stands too close. Maintain a short distance, strike deliberately and avoid retreating into a cave corner. A shield can help with some incoming attacks, although combat rules vary by edition.
During an early-game encounter, run toward good light and an enclosed shelter rather than fighting on a narrow ledge. If multiple spiders appear, escaping is often the safer option.
String and spider eye drops
Spiders can drop string, which is useful for tools and various crafting recipes such as bows and fishing rods. They can also drop spider eyes, which matter for potion brewing and other recipes. Neither drop is guaranteed from every individual spider.
A spider eye is not ordinary food for a beginner. Eating one can apply a harmful effect, so store it for brewing if that is your plan. Our Minecraft potion recipes guide explains why brewing ingredients should be kept organized.
Spiders versus cave spiders
Regular spiders and cave spiders are different mobs. Cave spiders are smaller, associated with abandoned mineshafts, and can inflict poison under relevant difficulty conditions. Their size also makes them harder to contain with gaps designed for large spiders.
If you find cobwebs and spawners inside a mineshaft, do not assume they behave like regular outdoor spiders. Close openings, prepare food and armor, and consider disabling the spawner with light and careful block placement before exploring deeper.
How to spider-proof an early base
Start with a full roof, closed doors, and a perimeter without easy climbing access. Add an overhang or roof lip where spiders could crawl up the outer wall. Light the interior and nearby terrain to reduce opportunities for hostile mobs to appear.
No structure is truly safe if you leave access gaps, so walk around the outside and look for trees, hills or stairs connecting to your roof. For related defenses, see our Minecraft Creeper guide.
How spider jockeys change encounters
Occasionally a skeleton may ride a spider, creating a combination that can close distance while firing projectiles. Prioritize cover and avoid fighting in open terrain where arrows and spider jumps can hit you at once. Separate the opponents when possible and use normal ranged-combat precautions.

Frequently asked questions
Are Minecraft spiders friendly during the day?
In sufficiently bright conditions, unprovoked regular spiders are often less aggressive, but they can still attack if provoked or if light conditions change.
What drops from a spider?
Possible drops include string and spider eyes. Looting and other mechanics can affect your overall yields.
Do spiders climb fences?
They can climb vertical obstacles, so walls and fences should not be treated as guaranteed spider-proof by themselves.
Do all spiders poison you?
No. The poisonous attack is associated with cave spiders under appropriate difficulty conditions, not ordinary spiders.
Are spider eyes useful?
Yes, especially as brewing ingredients for certain potions and fermented spider eyes.
