Minecraft Enchanting Table (2026): 15 Bookshelves and Level 30
A Minecraft enchanting table turns experience levels and lapis lazuli into enchantments for eligible gear and books. The basic table works without bookshelves, but the familiar high-level setup needs 15 regular bookshelves placed at the correct distance. Players often mistake the level-30 requirement for a cost of 30 levels. It isn’t: the strongest displayed offer requires you to have level 30 and normally consumes three levels and three lapis when selected.

Enchanting table recipe: what you need
Craft the enchanting table from one book, two diamonds and four obsidian. On the 3×3 crafting grid, place the book at the top middle, diamonds to the left and right of the middle-row obsidian, and obsidian across all three bottom cells. Prepare lapis lazuli and experience before trying to enchant; the table recipe does not include the lapis used for actual enchanting.
| Material | Quantity for one table | Purpose |
|---|---|---|
| Book | 1 | Top ingredient |
| Diamond | 2 | Middle left and middle right |
| Obsidian | 4 | One middle and three bottom blocks |
How many bookshelves for level 30?
You need 15 valid normal bookshelves. Place them in the perimeter around your table while keeping a one-block horizontal gap between the table and the shelves. Shelves may be at the table’s height or one level higher. More than 15 valid shelves can improve the look of your library but do not raise the maximum enchanting level above 30. Blocks that interrupt the required path may prevent a shelf from counting.
A simple top-down bookshelf plan
This five-by-five outline includes 15 shelf positions and one entry gap. The dot marks free space, E marks the enchanting table and B means ordinary bookshelf. Check the final available enchantment tiers in the interface, because different layouts or misplaced obstacles can affect the result.

The open point on the bottom edge is your entrance. Keep the middle ring clear instead of filling it with decorative blocks. A room that contains 15 bookshelves but puts some immediately beside the table will not necessarily provide the expected bonus.
Why chiseled bookshelves are different
A chiseled bookshelf is a storage block for books, not a substitute for regular enchanting-power bookshelves. Minecraft’s official chiseled-bookshelf explainer says it does not boost enchanting tables the way ordinary shelves do. That distinction matters when you decorate a library with attractive book-storage blocks and wonder why the strongest enchant option disappears.
How to use the enchanting table step by step
- Place the table and, for high-tier options, its regular bookshelves with a clear gap.
- Bring a compatible item or ordinary book, some lapis lazuli and enough player experience.
- Open the enchanting interface and place your item and lapis in their slots.
- Read the three offered tiers. The number shown by a high-tier choice is the required experience level, not the number of levels consumed.
- Select an option and review the enchantments actually applied before enchanting a second item.
The enchantment preview does not reveal every possible result in advance. Do not assume one attractive label guarantees all the effects you want. An anvil can combine appropriate enchanted items or books, but it has its own cost rules and is not interchangeable with the enchanting table.
Common enchanting-table problems
My table only shows low levels
Count the valid regular bookshelves, not decorative bookcases or chiseled shelves. Check that none are directly touching the table, and clear anything in the required gap. Reopen the table after repositioning blocks.
I have 15 shelves but I cannot choose level 30
You must also have enough player XP. If the highest option requires level 30 and your player is level 27, the visible bookshelf setup does not make that option available to purchase. Gather experience and return.
Why did an enchantment consume three levels rather than 30?
The large displayed value is an eligibility threshold for that offer; the actual deduction for the highest tier is typically three experience levels plus three lapis. That difference lets you enchant several items while keeping most of the levels you earned.
Can I enchant every item?
No. Only compatible items can be enchanted through the table. Some items use enchanted books through an anvil, and some effects come from loot, other structures or different mechanics instead of the table itself. For example, Mojang’s mace enchantment notes distinguish table-eligible Density/Breach from Wind Burst found through other gameplay.
What to do after the first good enchantment
Prioritize equipment you actually use. An excellent enchantment on a tool sitting in a chest is less helpful than a practical improvement to your main pickaxe or armor. Before spending rare books in an anvil, check whether you will replace the underlying gear soon. If you play on a shared server, also check the game version; modded servers can change the normal enchanting system.

Frequently asked questions
Do 16 or 30 bookshelves give stronger enchantments?
No. The ordinary enchanting setup reaches its maximum bookshelf contribution at 15 valid shelves.
Does a chiseled bookshelf count?
No. Use regular bookshelves for the enchanting level boost; chiseled bookshelves are for storing books.
Do I need 30 levels or just three?
For the strongest standard offer, you need to have 30 levels available but typically spend three levels and three lapis when enchanting.
Can I get every enchantment at the table?
No. Some enchantments come from other game systems, and equipment eligibility varies. Check the official update notes for new enchantments and edition differences.
