Minecraft Enderman: How to Avoid Attacks, Find Pearls & Farm Safely
Minecraft Endermen are tall neutral mobs that become hostile when you attack them or look directly at their faces. They teleport, can carry certain blocks, and are an important source of Ender Pearls on the route toward the End. Your best defense is to control your sightline, keep water nearby, and fight from a position the mob cannot easily reach.
Why Endermen attack players
Endermen are not like zombies: merely sharing an area with them is usually safe. Their main triggers are being struck and having a player look directly at their face. Accidental eye contact while looking across a cave can start a fight. Looking at the ground or the mob’s legs is generally safer. Once angered, an Enderman may teleport behind you or around obstacles; losing sight of it for a moment does not mean it left.
If you are building in a biome where Endermen regularly appear, light and fences alone do not solve every encounter because their teleportation allows unusual movement. A sheltered roof and a reliable escape are more practical than chasing one across open terrain.
How to avoid an Enderman encounter
Move the crosshair away from its head and avoid unnecessary strikes. When traveling at night, scan the surroundings without staring directly into its face. A carved pumpkin worn as a helmet is a well-known way to prevent Endermen becoming angry from eye contact, but it limits part of your view and offers less protection than good combat armor.
In early Survival, there is no reward for engaging every Enderman you see. If you are carrying diamonds or have low health, retreat to a secure shelter, sleep when possible, and return better equipped.
How to defeat an Enderman without a risky chase
Use a position with a ceiling only two blocks above the floor, so the Enderman’s tall hitbox cannot fit beneath it. Fight from under that roof with a suitable weapon while keeping an exit clear. Water can also repel Endermen, and a water bucket creates a useful emergency barrier in the Overworld.
Watch out for other hostile mobs and uneven ground while concentrating on teleportation. Never attack one next to lava or a cliff if the resulting chase may put you in danger. A shield and good armor help, but positioning is often more important than pure damage.
Where Endermen spawn
Endermen appear in multiple dimensions, with particularly noticeable populations in the End. They can also be encountered in the Overworld at night or in suitable dark conditions, and in the Nether’s warped forests. For a straightforward early-game pearl hunt, you may wait until you can travel safely and carry enough food and blocks.
If a location is empty, that does not mean the mob has been removed. Spawning depends on conditions, game rules, and other entities already present. Moving to another suitable area or returning later is often more effective than standing still.
What Ender Pearls do
Ender Pearls allow short-range teleportation when thrown, at a cost to the player in many situations. They are also used to craft Eyes of Ender when combined with blaze powder, making them central to locating and activating the stronghold End portal. A few pearls can be useful for escaping difficult terrain, but conserve your supply if your main goal is to reach the End.
Pearl drops are not guaranteed after every Enderman fight. Enchantments and later-game farms can improve collection efficiency, but do not claim that one encounter always equals one pearl.
Endermen carrying blocks
Endermen sometimes pick up and place certain blocks. This is part of their environmental behavior and can occasionally disturb decorative landscaping. They do not pick up every block type, and the list can change with game updates. If a carefully designed area is affected, protect it with block choices and construction rather than trying to remove every mob from the world.
Practical beginner checklist
Before hunting, bring a melee weapon, armor, a water bucket if you are in the Overworld, and building blocks for a two-block-high roof. Do not stare at the Enderman before choosing your position. Defeat the mob, collect any drop, and leave the area safely. For other early Survival skills, see our Creeper safety guide and enchanting-table guide.

Frequently asked questions
Can Endermen teleport into water?
They generally avoid water and take damage from contact. Water is useful for defense, but do not rely on it to control every nearby hazard.
Does a carved pumpkin stop Endermen attacking?
It can prevent anger from looking at a mob’s face, but hitting the Enderman can still trigger aggression.
Why do Endermen disappear?
They teleport as part of movement and combat. A sudden disappearance is not always death or despawning.
Are Ender Pearls guaranteed drops?
No. Plan for repeated encounters, or use other legitimate ways to acquire pearls.
Do Endermen spawn in the Nether?
Yes, including in warped forests. The Nether adds environmental risks such as lava and hostile mobs.
