Minecraft Crafting Table: Recipe, 3×3 Grid and First Tools
To make a crafting table in Minecraft, turn one log into four wooden planks, then arrange the four planks in a 2×2 square in your inventory crafting grid. Place the table in the world and interact with it to open a 3×3 crafting grid. That larger grid is what unlocks the recipes for tools, furnaces, chests and most of the equipment you will need in Survival.
This beginner-friendly guide explains how the recipe works on Java and Bedrock, why a crafting table sometimes appears to do nothing, and which first items are most useful to craft before your first night.
Minecraft crafting table recipe
| Ingredient | Amount | Crafting layout |
|---|---|---|
| Wooden planks of a compatible type | 4 | Fill all four slots of your personal 2×2 crafting grid |
Any standard wood plank type works for the crafting table recipe. You do not need four different woods, stone, iron, or a previously built crafting table. A single log provides enough planks to build the first table.
Get planks from a tree
- Find a tree and break one log block by holding your mining control.
- Pick up the log and open your inventory.
- Put the log in the 2×2 crafting area. The result is four wooden planks.
- Take the planks into your inventory and arrange one in each of the four crafting slots.
- Move the crafting table from the output slot to your hotbar or inventory.
Mojang documents this exact progression in its official How to Craft guide. No special biome or structure is required, which is why the crafting table is normally one of the first items players make.
How to use a crafting table on PC, console and mobile
After crafting the table, put it in a hotbar slot and place it on solid ground. Interact with the placed block to open the crafting screen. On a PC using a mouse, that is commonly right-click. On console and mobile, use the platform’s normal interact action or on-screen touch control.
The important difference is the size of the crafting grid. Your inventory shows a 2×2 grid; a crafting table provides 3×3 slots. You can therefore create tools and blocks that require three items in a row, such as a wooden pickaxe.
Java Edition
Open your inventory with the configured inventory key, then craft the table from planks. Place the item and use the block to see the 3×3 grid. You can also open the recipe book to find known craftable items and place the correct ingredients more easily.
Bedrock Edition and controllers
Choose the crafting table in the crafting interface, make it from planks, and place it in the world. The interface may offer a searchable list of recipes rather than expecting you to drag every ingredient manually. Controller prompts depend on the console and input mapping; follow the on-screen command for using a block.
Minecraft on phones and tablets
Open inventory, make four planks, then select the crafting table recipe. Place it using the normal block-placement control, and tap the placed table to open its larger crafting interface. If you have an accessibility layout or external controller connected, the prompts can differ.
What can you craft first?
Once the 3×3 grid is available, prioritize equipment that supports a safe first night.
| Item | Materials | Why it helps |
|---|---|---|
| Wooden pickaxe | 3 planks and 2 sticks | Mine stone to upgrade tools |
| Furnace | 8 cobblestone | Smelt ores and cook food |
| Chest | 8 planks | Keep extra materials organized |
| Wooden sword | 2 planks and 1 stick | Basic early-game melee weapon |
| Wooden axe | 3 planks and 2 sticks | Gather logs more quickly |
Recipes need their components in the correct pattern. For the wooden pickaxe, place three planks across the top row and two sticks vertically in the center. The sword uses two planks vertically above a stick.
Crafting table vs. the inventory crafting grid
It is easy to confuse the two because both have a crafting result slot. The personal 2×2 grid works for smaller recipes such as converting logs into planks and crafting the crafting table itself. The 3×3 crafting table grid supports recipes that would otherwise not fit.
You do not need a crafting table to craft another crafting table. If you lose yours in a cave, collect or carry wood, produce planks from the 2×2 grid, and craft a new one. Placing multiple tables near storage and furnaces can make a large base easier to use.
Crafting table not working? Check these common mistakes
You are trying to craft a 3×3 recipe in the 2×2 grid
If the recipe calls for a full row of three materials, the inventory grid is too small. Place a crafting table in the world and interact with it.
The materials are in the wrong pattern
Several Minecraft crafting recipes depend on precise slot positions. Use the recipe book to check the layout. A different wood type may be fine, but an item in the wrong square can stop the expected result from appearing.
The crafting table is in your inventory, not placed
Owning the table item is not enough to activate its 3×3 interface. Put it in your hotbar, place the block on a surface, and interact with the placed block.
Your inventory is full
Free a slot or move materials into storage so you can pick up the result. If the recipe output appears but you cannot take it, check storage space and controls before assuming the recipe is broken.
You are viewing an outdated tutorial
Some screenshots show earlier Minecraft interfaces, but basic recipes such as the crafting table remain familiar. Follow the current recipe book and your game’s controls instead of expecting every button to appear in the same place as an old video.
Can you break and move a crafting table?
Yes. A crafting table is a placeable block that you can break and collect for reuse. You do not need to craft a new one every time you build somewhere else. It can also be convenient to carry one during longer mining trips, although you should still pack food, tools and building blocks.
The crafting table is not the same as the Crafter block introduced for redstone automation. A regular table is used directly by the player. A Crafter can perform a configured recipe when powered by redstone; Mojang explains the difference in its Crafter guide.
After the crafting table: your first-night checklist
Use the table to make a pickaxe, gather cobblestone, make a furnace and basic stone tools, and prepare a safe enclosed shelter. Collect food and create light sources. This progression is based on the same basic crafting sequence covered in Minecraft’s first-night survival guide.
Once the basics are familiar, use our Minecraft lodestone recipe and compass guide to craft a navigation marker from an iron ingot and chiseled stone bricks. For later progression, see our enchanting table guide and anvil recipes and repairs.
Frequently asked questions
How many planks do you need for a crafting table?
Four. One standard log can be converted into four planks.
Can I make a crafting table using different wood types?
In ordinary Minecraft crafting, wooden planks can be used to make a crafting table; use four suitable plank items following the recipe displayed in your version.
Why can’t I see a 3×3 crafting grid?
You are probably still using the inventory’s 2×2 grid. Place a crafting table block and interact with it.
Does the crafting table wear out?
No, regular use does not consume crafting tables. Breaking one and picking it up lets you reuse it elsewhere.
Do I need a crafting table in Creative Mode?
You can take items directly from Creative inventory, but a crafting table is still useful for learning recipes and testing how Survival crafting works.
