Minecraft Anvil Recipe (2026): Crafting, Repairs and Enchantment Costs
An anvil in Minecraft lets you repair equipment, combine compatible enchantments and rename items. The recipe takes three blocks of iron and four iron ingots, totaling 31 iron ingots once you account for the nine ingots in each block. An anvil is not the same as a grindstone or an enchanting table: each tool solves a different problem.
How to craft an anvil
- Mine or otherwise obtain 31 iron ingots.
- Use 27 ingots to craft three blocks of iron.
- Open a crafting table.
- Place three iron blocks across the top row, one iron ingot in the center cell and three iron ingots across the bottom row.
- Take the finished anvil and place it on a suitable block.
This 3–1–3 pattern is the standard anvil recipe. If you only have three iron ingots instead of three iron blocks, you do not have enough material.
What can you do with an anvil?
Repair equipment
You can combine compatible items or use appropriate repair materials on supported equipment, subject to experience costs and game rules. Repairing with an anvil can preserve certain enchantments that would be removed by a grindstone. Check the displayed cost before confirming a repair: an anvil is not an infinite free durability refill.
Combine enchanted books
Place an item and a compatible enchanted book into the slots. The preview shows the resulting enchantment and experience cost when a valid combination is available. Not every enchantment can be combined with every item or every other enchantment. For example, certain protection types or damage enchantments are mutually exclusive under standard rules.
Rename an item
You can assign a custom name within the interface, which is useful for organizing tools or labeling special equipment. Cosmetic naming is distinct from applying an enchantment and may have a cost.
Why does Minecraft say “Too Expensive!”?
In Java Edition’s Survival and Adventure modes, anvil work can hit a level-cost limitation. Prior operations also increase future costs, so the order in which you combine equipment and books matters. Creative mode behaves differently. Instead of repeatedly repairing one heavily worked item, consider Mending when appropriate and plan enchantment combinations before spending rare books.
Anvil versus grindstone versus enchanting table
| Station | Primary use |
|---|---|
| Anvil | Repair, rename, combine enchantments |
| Grindstone | Repair certain items and remove many enchantments |
| Enchanting table | Apply new random enchantment choices |
We have a separate guide to 15 bookshelves and level-30 enchanting for setting up the table correctly.
Anvil damage and safety
Anvils can become damaged with use and eventually break. A falling anvil can be hazardous, which is why suspending one over a walkway is not sensible in Survival mode. Put a frequently used anvil at a convenient height and keep replacement iron available when operating an equipment workshop.
FAQ
How many iron ingots make one anvil?
31 total: 27 for the three iron blocks and four loose ingots.
Can an anvil combine incompatible enchantments?
No. The preview will not apply mutually exclusive enchantments to the same item.
Does an anvil give random new enchantments?
No. It combines or preserves existing enchantments; the enchanting table offers random choices.
Can I repair forever using one anvil?
No. The block wears out, and items may accumulate work penalties.
