Spotify Offline Mode: How Downloads Work on Mobile and Desktop
Reviewed October 9, 2026. Offline Mode is useful on planes and commutes, but it does not automatically download every song you have saved. Spotify separates downloading content while connected from restricting playback to downloaded content afterward. The difference matters when your phone has storage limits, a poor network or an expired subscription.
Download music before going offline
While connected, open an eligible playlist or album and use the download control. Spotify’s support documentation says individual songs cannot be downloaded directly; add a song to a playlist and download the playlist instead. Look for the downloaded indicator rather than assuming a green heart or a saved-library entry means a local copy exists. Download availability depends on account type and content category.
How to use Offline Mode
Spotify normally plays downloaded material when your connection drops. Offline Mode is an optional setting that restricts playback to what has been downloaded, useful when you want to avoid streaming. Test it before a flight by opening the app in Offline Mode while still at home. If the playlist is incomplete, reconnect and let pending downloads finish first. Avoid erasing the app cache indiscriminately before traveling.
Mobile data versus Wi-Fi downloads
Spotify downloads on Wi-Fi by default to reduce mobile-data use, but its settings offer a download-over-cellular control in Settings and privacy > Data-saving and offline. Switch it on only if you accept the data cost. Large playlists can use substantial device storage; check both free space and the number of tracks. A phone’s battery saver or aggressive cache-cleaning app can interfere with long transfers.
Why downloaded content is missing
Before reinstalling, check whether you are logged into the right account, whether the download icon remains present and whether the device has space. Spotify mentions a supported-device limit and the need for periodic connectivity checks. Reinstalling the app removes local downloads that then have to be fetched again. This is particularly inconvenient when troubleshooting shortly before traveling, so make it a late step.
Avoid mixing downloads with permanent ownership
Offline songs in Spotify are licensed app downloads rather than transferable audio files. They are subject to the service’s subscription, device and availability rules, not an indefinite ownership guarantee. If you are changing phones, plan for the new device to download playlists separately. A local Spotify download should not be treated as a backup of a creator’s audio or your own purchased music files.
