Minecraft Stray: Find the Frozen Skeleton and Stop Slowness
Minecraft Strays are cold-biome skeleton variants that fire arrows capable of inflicting Slowness. They can make an otherwise simple skeleton encounter dangerous by reducing your movement while more arrows are incoming. This guide covers where they spawn, how they differ from regular skeletons, and which defensive tactics help most.
Where to find Strays
Look in suitable snowy and frozen biomes during normal hostile-mob spawning conditions. Their ragged, cold-looking model distinguishes them from regular skeletons. Conditions vary by biome and edition, so snow alone does not guarantee a Stray will appear.
If the area seems empty, move through suitable terrain rather than repeatedly standing in one spot. Bring warm-looking building materials if you like, but Minecraft’s vanilla survival does not generally have a body-temperature meter you need to manage.
What Slowness arrows do
Stray arrows may apply a temporary Slowness effect on hit. Reduced movement makes it harder to dodge follow-up arrows, sprint to cover or escape a second hostile mob. The threat is therefore less about a single powerful shot and more about losing control of the pace of combat.
Do not charge in a straight line with no escape route. Find cover first and watch where the arrow volleys land.
How to fight a Stray
Use a shield when available and appropriate for your edition, or hide behind solid blocks while advancing. A bow can let you trade ranged attacks without running across open snow. If close combat is unavoidable, approach between arrow shots and keep the path back to shelter clear.
Avoid fighting at the lip of an icy cliff, ravine or powdered-snow hole. Slowness can turn a minor navigation problem into a costly fall.
Stray versus skeleton
Both are undead ranged mobs using bows, but Strays are associated with cold environments and Slowness arrows. Skeletons are more widespread and do not routinely inflict that same special effect. Both should be approached with cover and awareness of other mobs.
Strays can also be connected to conversion mechanics in applicable versions, but those are specialized farming topics. Do not copy an old conversion process without checking whether it works in your edition.
Useful drops and tipped arrows
Strays drop common skeleton-type materials such as bones and arrows, with an additional possibility of Slowness-related arrows under certain rules. Drop quantities and exact chances depend on edition, conditions and enchantments. One fight does not guarantee a tipped arrow.
Bones can be turned into bone meal for farms; arrows are handy for future ranged combat.
Why powdered snow adds danger
Powdered snow can trap or slow unprepared players in some cold biomes. Wear leather boots where appropriate to move on top of powdered snow, and carry blocks for a quick exit. Combining difficult snow terrain with a mob that slows you is especially hazardous.
If you are scouting a new frozen biome, test questionable surfaces before running across them.
Prepare a safe snowy base
Build a small roofed shelter with proper lighting, a door, storage and a safe path to the nearest reliable terrain. If you are staying for a long trip, move beds away from dangerous ledges and keep food ready for healing.

Frequently asked questions
What does a Stray shoot?
Strays attack with arrows that can inflict Slowness.
Does every snowy biome have Strays?
They spawn in suitable cold biomes subject to edition-specific rules, so not every snowy area guarantees them.
Can a Stray burn in sunlight?
As skeleton variants, they can be affected by sunlight under relevant conditions unless protected.
What should I carry to fight one?
A shield, food, a bow or suitable melee weapon and blocks for cover make the encounter safer.
Do Strays always drop Slowness arrows?
No. Special drops are chance-dependent and not guaranteed after each kill.
