iPhone Alarm Volume Too Low? Change the Right Setting and Fix Silent Alarms

Quick answer: To make a regular iPhone Clock alarm louder, open Settings > Sounds & Haptics and adjust the Ringtone and Alerts slider. In the Clock app, make sure the alarm has a real sound selected instead of None. Some iOS versions or sleep-schedule wake-up alarms have additional volume controls, so use the specific alarm editor when one is displayed.

If your iPhone alarm is quiet, it is easy to change the wrong setting: the volume buttons can control videos and music rather than the alert loudness you need. This practical guide follows Apple’s current instructions, reviewed October 13, 2026.

How to change the normal alarm volume

  1. Open the Settings app.
  2. Select Sounds & Haptics.
  3. Under Ringtone and Alerts, drag the slider right for louder alarms or left for quieter alarms.
  4. Listen to the sample alert while moving the slider. It helps you check whether the speaker is working.
  5. Open Clock, choose the Alarms tab, and edit the alarm you use most often.
  6. Tap Sound and select a tone with a clear, audible beginning. Save changes and perform a safe test before relying on it.

Do not use a low-volume song as your only wake-up signal if you cannot reliably hear it. The ringtone slider generally applies to regular Clock alarms, but device models, iOS versions and dedicated Sleep/Wake Up alarm controls can add exceptions.

Why the volume buttons seem to do nothing

Under Sounds & Haptics, Change with Buttons controls whether the side volume buttons adjust ringtone/alert volume outside active media playback. If it is off, set alarm loudness with the on-screen slider. If it is on, pressing a button while audio is playing may still alter media output instead.

Six fixes if your alarm is silent or quiet

1. Make sure the chosen alarm is enabled

Clock > Alarms lists each alarm with an on/off switch. Verify the right days and time, especially AM versus PM and recurring schedules.

2. Check Sound, not only volume

If Sound is set to None, a loud ringtone slider cannot produce that alarm tone. Choose a real ringtone and save. Apple also documents alarm haptic options; do not rely on vibration alone unless you intentionally want that behavior.

3. Inspect Sleep/Wake Up separately

The wake-up alarm tied to a Sleep Schedule may have different options from a normal Clock alarm. Open the next wake-up alarm and look for its Sound and Volume controls if shown. Avoid changing the daily ringtone slider and assuming it overrides every specialized alarm.

4. Do not blame Silent or Focus mode first

Apple says ordinary Clock alarms still sound in Silent mode, when Do Not Disturb is on, and while headphones are connected. A silent alarm is more often an alarm selection or volume issue than a Focus switch. To understand the separate controls, see how Airplane Mode differs from other iPhone settings.

5. Check the speaker

Play a known notification or ringtone sample. If all audio is faint, remove any covering case, inspect speaker grilles for lint without applying liquid, and check whether there is an unrelated device sound issue.

6. Restart and update before important alarms

Restart the phone, check iOS updates, then set a test alarm several minutes ahead. If this is your only early-morning alarm for travel or work, use a backup alarm until you confirm reliable volume.

What about alarms through headphones?

Apple states that when headphones are connected, an alarm plays at a set volume through both the built-in speakers and connected headphones on supported iPhones. Actual perceived loudness can vary by accessory and surroundings. Test the physical speaker rather than assuming the headphones will wake you.

Frequently asked questions

Does Do Not Disturb silence my iPhone alarm?

Normally no, according to Apple’s Clock guidance. Check the alarm’s enabled state, sound and volume first.

Why is the Sleep wake-up alarm still quiet?

The Sleep/Wake Up alarm can have its own sound and volume control. Review that alarm specifically.

Should I change Media volume in Control Center?

Not as the first step for a regular Clock alarm. Use Sounds & Haptics and test.

Can I make an alarm vibration-only?

Depending on available tones and haptics settings, you can configure an alarm without an audible tone. Recheck the choice if you intended it to wake you.
