New iPad Setup: Apple Account, Wi-Fi and First Settings
Setting up a new iPad is easiest when you have a Wi-Fi connection, your Apple Account credentials and your old device or a recent backup available.
Before you start
- Know the Wi-Fi network name and password, or have cellular service available on a Wi-Fi + Cellular model.
- Have your Apple Account and password ready.
- Keep your old iPhone or iPad nearby if you want to transfer data directly.
- Make sure important data on the old device is backed up.
- Connect both devices to power when transferring a large amount of data.
Turn on and begin setup
Hold the top button until the Apple logo appears, then follow the onscreen language and region prompts. Connect to Wi-Fi when asked. An internet connection is needed for activation and for many setup steps.
Use Quick Start or set up manually
If you have another compatible Apple device, Quick Start can help transfer settings and data. Keep the old device close to the new iPad and follow the prompts. You can also choose a manual setup and later restore from an iCloud or computer backup.
Sign in to your Apple Account
Your Apple Account connects the iPad to services such as iCloud, App Store purchases, Find My and synchronization. If two-factor authentication is enabled, be ready to enter the verification code sent to a trusted device or number.
Create a device lock
Set a passcode during setup. Depending on the model, you may also be offered Face ID or Touch ID. The passcode remains important even when biometric unlocking is enabled.
Transfer apps and data
Setup can offer several paths: transfer directly from another Apple device, restore from iCloud, restore from a Mac or PC, move certain data from Android, or start as a new iPad. The best option depends on where your existing data lives.
Check Wi-Fi and updates after setup
Once you reach the Home Screen, open Settings and confirm Wi-Fi, Apple Account, iCloud backup and software-update settings. Installing the latest compatible iPadOS update can provide current security fixes and features.
Bottom line
Prepare your network credentials, Apple Account and backup first. Use Quick Start when you have an old Apple device nearby, or restore from a backup if you prefer a clean transfer path.
