How to Pair a Nintendo Switch Controller: Joy-Con and Pro Fixes
If you are trying to figure out how to pair a Nintendo Switch controller, first identify whether you have detachable Joy-Con or the separate Pro Controller. Nintendo provides simple pairing methods for both. Most connection problems come down to the correct pairing screen, the small SYNC button or the controller’s power—not a need to replace the console.
Pair Joy-Con by attaching them to the Switch
On an original Nintendo Switch or Switch OLED, the simplest initial method is to slide the left and right Joy-Con down the console’s side rails until they seat properly. Nintendo calls this joint pairing. Handle the controllers gently and do not force a misaligned rail.
After pairing, detach the Joy-Con if you want to play wirelessly. Their player LEDs help identify which controller is active. If your Switch is connected to a TV, pairing does not require keeping the Joy-Con attached once the link is established.
Pair Joy-Con wirelessly using SYNC
From the HOME Menu, open Controllers → Change Grip/Order. With this screen displayed, press and hold the small SYNC button on the Joy-Con for at least one second. Watch for the player indicator to confirm pairing.
Nintendo’s official Joy-Con pairing instructions describe this process for the original Switch family. The button is small; do not confuse it with the SL and SR shoulder buttons used when playing with a single Joy-Con sideways.
Set one Joy-Con or two as your controller
Pairing tells the console that the controller exists. The grip order step tells it how you intend to hold the controls. For two Joy-Con together, press L + R (or the corresponding rear shoulder buttons) as directed on the pairing screen. For a single Joy-Con held horizontally, press SL + SR on that one controller. The arrangement shown on screen matters more than how the controllers happen to be resting on your desk.
Pair a Nintendo Switch Pro Controller
Choose Controllers → Change Grip/Order on the HOME Menu, then hold the Pro Controller’s SYNC button for at least one second. Nintendo also supports pairing the original Pro Controller to a docked original Switch or OLED Switch with its USB charging cable. Use the controller and dock connection that matches your model.
For a first-party controller, follow Nintendo’s Pro Controller pairing guide. Third-party controllers may have their own pairing combinations or compatibility requirements, so check the exact manufacturer’s documentation rather than assuming the Nintendo button sequence applies to every brand.
Why isn’t the Switch controller connecting?
Check battery and charging
If the controller has no power, its player LEDs may not respond. Charge the controller using an appropriate supported setup and retry. If the controller was stored for a long time, give it time on a working charger before assuming it is faulty.
Restart and reopen Change Grip/Order
Save your game, restart the Switch normally, then open the pairing screen again. Keep the controller reasonably close to the system while pairing. Avoid troubleshooting beside unusually crowded wireless accessories if you suspect interference.
Clear previous pairings only when needed
Nintendo provides a Disconnect Controllers action under System Settings → Controllers and Sensors. It clears saved wireless controller associations, which means other controllers may also need to be paired again. Use it only when simpler methods have failed. The official Pro Controller troubleshooting article explains the sequence in context.
Original Switch vs Switch Lite vs Switch 2
Switch Lite supports compatible external controllers but has no detachable side-rail Joy-Con of its own. Models and USB accessories can affect wired connection options. Nintendo Switch 2 has its own controller family and support instructions; do not force original Joy-Con hardware into slots designed for a different model. Always identify the console and controller model before following a pairing guide.
If your aim is to use a Nintendo controller on Windows instead, see our existing Nintendo Switch Pro Controller on PC guide. Pairing to a PC differs from pairing to the Nintendo console. For people moving to another Switch, the Nintendo Switch account and save transfer guide addresses the separate data-migration steps.
Frequently asked questions
Can one Joy-Con work alone?
Yes, in compatible games. Pair it, then choose the horizontal single-controller grip with SL and SR as instructed on screen.
Why do the Joy-Con lights flash but nothing happens?
The controller may be searching for a connection. Verify that Change Grip/Order is open, confirm the battery has power and try pairing again.
Does pairing erase game saves?
No. Controller pairing is separate from save-data management. Do not factory-reset your console just to try connecting a Joy-Con.
