How to Pair Apple Pencil With iPad: Choose the Right Method for Your Model

Trying to figure out how to pair Apple Pencil with your iPad? The answer depends on which Pencil and iPad you own. Apple Pencil Pro and Apple Pencil (2nd generation) pair magnetically on compatible iPads, Apple Pencil (USB-C) connects with a cable for initial pairing, and the original Apple Pencil uses Lightning or a specific adapter. Choosing the wrong method can make a perfectly working Pencil seem broken.

First, identify your Apple Pencil and iPad

Open Settings > General > About on the iPad and check its model name. Then identify whether your stylus is Apple Pencil Pro, Apple Pencil (2nd generation), Apple Pencil (USB-C), or Apple Pencil (1st generation). These are distinct products, and physical attachment alone does not prove compatibility.

Use Apple’s official Apple Pencil compatibility chart to match the exact two models before troubleshooting. A newer USB-C iPad is not automatically compatible with every Apple Pencil, and the 1st-generation Pencil requires an adapter with certain USB-C iPads.

How to pair Apple Pencil Pro

  1. Check Apple’s compatibility list to confirm your iPad supports Apple Pencil Pro.
  2. Turn on Bluetooth in Settings > Bluetooth and make sure your iPad is running a compatible iPadOS version.
  3. Attach Apple Pencil Pro to the magnetic connector along the compatible long edge of the iPad.
  4. Follow the pairing prompt, if one appears. Leave it attached briefly to charge if its battery was low.

Apple Pencil Pro is compatible with particular newer iPad Pro, iPad Air, and iPad mini models, not every iPad that has a magnetic edge. If the Pencil does not respond, remove any case that may obstruct the connector and follow Apple’s pairing troubleshooting steps.

How to pair Apple Pencil (2nd generation)

For a compatible iPad, enable Bluetooth and attach the 2nd-generation Apple Pencil to the magnetic connector on the side of the device. Allow the iPad to recognize it, then follow any on-screen instructions. The connector handles pairing and charging on supported models.

Do not confuse this model with Apple Pencil (USB-C): they look similar, but the USB-C model uses a cable for pairing and does not charge from a magnetic attachment.

How to pair Apple Pencil (USB-C)

  1. Slide open the end of Apple Pencil (USB-C) to expose the USB-C port.
  2. Use a suitable USB-C cable to connect the Pencil directly to the USB-C port on a compatible iPad.
  3. Tap Tap to Connect when it appears.
  4. Disconnect the cable once pairing finishes. Reconnect the cable to charge when needed.

The magnetic side attachment on this Pencil is useful for storage; it does not replace the cable pairing method or enable wireless charging. Check Apple’s iPad User Guide for Apple Pencil (USB-C) if the prompt differs on your version of iPadOS.

How to pair Apple Pencil (1st generation)

With an iPad that has a compatible Lightning port

Remove the cap from the Pencil and plug its Lightning connector into the iPad’s Lightning port. When the Pair button appears, tap it. Be gentle with the exposed connector and avoid leaving the Pencil attached where it could be bent.

With a compatible USB-C iPad

On models such as the iPad (10th generation) and supported iPad (A16), Apple Pencil (1st generation) needs the USB-C to Apple Pencil Adapter and a USB-C cable to pair and charge. Connect the Pencil to the adapter, connect the cable to the adapter and the iPad, and tap the pairing prompt. Simply holding the Pencil against the iPad’s edge will not pair it.

Apple Pencil not pairing? Work through these checks

Confirm compatibility before buying accessories

If your iPad is not on Apple’s support list for that Pencil, a different cable, magnetic case or software setting will not add compatibility. Check the exact device model rather than searching only for “iPad Pro” or “iPad Air.”

Check Bluetooth and update iPadOS

Open Settings > Bluetooth and turn Bluetooth on. Install a supported iPadOS update if necessary. If the Pencil was paired previously and appears in the Bluetooth device list, Apple recommends tapping its information icon and choosing Forget This Device, then trying the model-specific pairing steps again.

Give the Pencil time to charge

A depleted battery can prevent pairing. Attach a compatible magnetic Pencil or connect a cable-paired Pencil to power for at least a minute, then try again. For magnetic models, remove a thick case or cover that may block proper alignment.

Restart, reconnect, and know when to stop

Restart the iPad with the Pencil connected or attached as Apple directs, then look for the pairing prompt again. Do not force a Lightning connector, attempt to open the Pencil, or assume an unverified third-party adapter will work. If your compatible Pencil still fails, Apple Support recommends service assessment.

FAQ

Can any Apple Pencil work with any iPad?

No. Apple Pencil support depends on the exact iPad model and Pencil generation. The official compatibility chart is the safest check.

Why won’t Apple Pencil (USB-C) pair when attached magnetically?

That model uses USB-C for pairing and charging. Its magnetic attachment is for convenient storage, not wireless pairing.

Do I have to pair Apple Pencil every time?

Usually not. After successful pairing, it should reconnect to the same compatible iPad. You may need to pair again after certain device changes, forgetting it in Bluetooth settings, or pairing it with another device.

Is Apple Pencil required to write in Google Docs?

No. A compatible Pencil can help with supported writing and markup workflows, but document-editing and display settings vary by app. For a separate productivity setting, AVARIXO’s Google Docs dark mode guide explains appearance options on different devices.
