How to Make Obsidian in Minecraft: Water, Lava, Mining and Portal Tips

To make obsidian in Minecraft, bring water into contact with a lava source block. The lava source converts to obsidian. Mine the resulting black-purple block with a diamond or netherite pickaxe if you want to collect it. Pouring water over flowing lava can create a different block, so the distinction between a source and a flow matters.

Obsidian: the quick rules

QuestionAnswer
How does obsidian form?Water contacts a lava source block.
Can I craft it in a crafting table? No; make it in the world or find existing obsidian.
What tool collects it?A diamond or netherite pickaxe.
What is the common use?Building a Nether portal frame and an enchanting table.
How much for a portal?10 for the smallest frame without corner blocks; 14 with corners.

Method 1: Turn a lava pool into obsidian

  1. Carry a water bucket. Make a bucket from iron ingots, then collect water. Bring a diamond or netherite pickaxe before mining.
  2. Locate a safe lava source. Overworld caves, surface lava pools, and other exposed lava provide opportunities. Keep a stable place to stand.
  3. Place water so it flows onto the lava. When water meets the actual lava source, that source becomes an obsidian block.
  4. Secure the work area. Avoid standing in lava, and watch for more lava below the newly formed obsidian before breaking it.
  5. Mine using the correct pickaxe. The block can take time to break. Keep water available in case more lava is exposed.

Test a small area first. If the result is cobblestone rather than obsidian, you likely converted flowing lava, not the source block you intended. The game simulates water and lava interactions differently depending on the liquid state.

Method 2: Make a portal frame without mining obsidian

You can also build the required portal shape by placing lava source blocks in their final positions and converting them to obsidian with water. This bucket-building technique is useful when you have iron for buckets but not yet a diamond pickaxe. It requires care: work one frame block at a time to avoid flooding the wrong location.

  1. Choose flat, fire-safe ground away from flammable structures.
  2. Outline where your portal’s side and top blocks will stand.
  3. Place a lava source where the next obsidian block should be.
  4. Apply water to convert the source, then collect or redirect the water safely.
  5. Repeat until the frame has the correct opening; light it using flint and steel.

The smallest standard rectangular Nether portal uses two obsidian blocks across the top and bottom edges and three along each side, for 10 frame blocks if the four corners are left empty. Add corners and you use 14. Our separate Nether portal building guide explains dimensions, lighting, and how portals link.

Where to find obsidian without pouring water

Obsidian may appear naturally around lava-water contact zones and in some generated structures, including ruined portals. The exact amount you can salvage varies; not every block visible in a ruined portal is useful obsidian, and crying obsidian behaves differently from regular obsidian.

Do not confuse crying obsidian with normal obsidian. Crying obsidian has a glowing purple effect and cannot replace regular obsidian in a working Nether portal frame. It has its own purposes in Minecraft.

Best ways to mine obsidian without losing your items

  • Look underneath: newly formed obsidian over a lava pool can sit above more lava. Mine from a secure edge, not while standing directly on a risky block.
  • Use the right pickaxe: stone, iron, and wooden tools will not drop collectible obsidian.
  • Prevent dropped blocks from burning: manage nearby flowing lava before breaking an exposed block.
  • Keep your exits open: avoid encasing yourself with solid blocks while underground.
  • Plan a pickup route: collect only what you need rather than stripping an unsafe deep pool.

FAQ

Can you make obsidian with one bucket of lava?

Yes. One correctly placed lava source can be converted into one obsidian block when water contacts it. The process must be repeated for additional blocks.

Can an iron pickaxe mine obsidian?

It can break a block slowly but will not let you collect the obsidian item. Bring a diamond or netherite pickaxe for harvesting.

Is there a Minecraft obsidian crafting recipe?

No standard crafting-table recipe produces ordinary obsidian. Its central mechanic is in-world lava conversion and exploration.

Does pouring lava onto water always make obsidian?

Do not rely on that rule. Liquid interactions depend on which block is a source and how the flowing liquids meet. The reliable method is to let water contact a lava source block.
