Where to Find Downloads on iPhone: Files, Safari and Missing PDFs
To find downloads on an iPhone, open the Files app, tap Browse, then open the Downloads folder. If it is not visible, check iCloud Drive → Downloads and On My iPhone → Downloads. Safari also has a recent-download control, while photos saved to the photo library are normally found in Photos instead of Files.
Where iPhone downloads are saved
| Downloaded item | Look here first | Important exception |
|---|---|---|
| Safari PDF, ZIP or document | Files → Downloads | Safari’s download destination can be changed. |
| Picture saved to Photos | Photos app | It may not appear in Files. |
| Mail attachment | The folder you chose when saving | It may still be inside the email. |
| Offline video from an app | That app’s Downloads area | Many apps do not expose their offline media in Files. |
| Cloud-drive download | Files → cloud provider, or its app | An offline copy is not necessarily in the standard Downloads folder. |
Find a downloaded file using the Files app
- Open Files. Swipe down on your iPhone’s Home Screen and search for it if you cannot find its blue folder icon.
- Tap Browse at the bottom. If you see only a document or the Recents view, go back to the main Browse screen.
- Under Locations, open iCloud Drive, then Downloads.
- If the file is missing, return to Locations and try On My iPhone and any Downloads folder there.
- Use the search bar to look for a filename or extension such as PDF or ZIP.
For a document you intend to keep, touch and hold its entry to open supported file actions, including Rename, Move and Share. If you have similar downloads with generic names, rename them immediately so the correct version is easy to find later.
Where to find the Safari download list
Safari displays a download indicator near its address bar when a download is in progress or recently completed. Tap that control to inspect the list and open a downloaded item. The exact icon placement can vary by Safari layout and iOS version, so look for an arrow-shaped Downloads control rather than expecting the button in one fixed corner.
Safari’s recent-download list is not a substitute for file storage. To organize documents or send them as attachments later, find the actual downloaded files in the Files app.
Change where Safari saves future downloads
On current versions of iOS, go to Settings → Apps → Safari → Downloads. Some older versions show Settings → Safari → Downloads. Select the destination you prefer, such as iCloud Drive, On My iPhone or another supported location.
If you choose iCloud Drive, documents may sync with your other Apple devices using the same account. If you choose On My iPhone, files reside on that device rather than automatically appearing in iCloud Drive. Moving the download destination does not automatically reorganize every file you previously saved.
Why an iPhone download is missing
You’re checking the wrong storage location
Browse iCloud Drive and On My iPhone separately. Search both, and look inside any folder you picked manually when saving.
The item was saved to Photos
When you select a command such as Save Image or Save Video from a website, the result may go to the Photos app. Check Photos before concluding the download failed.
The download never finished
Return to Safari, open the Downloads indicator and inspect the transfer. Network interruptions or storage limits can cause downloads to fail. Retry only after you confirm the destination and available device space.
The file is inside another app
A streaming service or an app-specific offline feature may keep a file in private app storage. Open the original app and look for its Downloads or Offline view; there may be no standalone file available to export.
The file opens in an unexpected app
A file format is not the same as the app that displays it. A PDF may preview in Files while a specialist design or office format requires a compatible application. Touch and hold the file, then use an available Open With option when supported.
Keep downloads organized and private
- Create separate folders for receipts, study documents, travel bookings and work.
- Rename generic files such as document.pdf before storing several similar copies.
- Use the Files Share action rather than searching the web and downloading a duplicate.
- Do not upload confidential downloads to unknown conversion sites.
- Before deleting a file, verify whether another copy already exists in iCloud Drive or another cloud service.
Frequently asked questions
Does the iPhone have a separate Downloads app?
Normally no. Downloads are usually stored in a Downloads folder in Files. Safari may display its own temporary list of recent transfers.
How do I find a PDF downloaded from Safari?
Open Files → Browse → Downloads. If it is not there, check iCloud Drive and On My iPhone, then return to Safari’s recent-download indicator.
Why is my Downloads folder empty?
You may have selected a different location or saved a photo to Photos rather than Files. Search by filename and inspect the app in which you originally downloaded it.
Can I open a download without internet?
Locally saved files are usually available offline. Cloud-only items may require a connection before they become available on the iPhone.
Will clearing Safari history erase downloads saved in Files?
Deleting Safari browsing history is a different operation from deleting a stored document in Files. Inspect the actual location before assuming a file is gone.
