To enable Fortnite two-factor authentication (2FA), sign in to the Epic Games account that owns your Fortnite progress, open Password and security, find Two-Factor Authentication, select Set Up beside your preferred method, and enter the verification code. This protects your Epic account and is required for certain Fortnite features, including sending gifts. Changing a console password alone does not enable Epic account 2FA.

Enable Fortnite 2FA in five steps

  1. On your phone or computer, open the Epic Games Password and security settings.
  2. Sign in with the account connected to the Fortnite profile you actually use. Console players should use the correct platform sign-in option if necessary.
  3. Scroll to Two-Factor Authentication.
  4. Choose Set Up for the method you want, such as an authenticator app, email or another currently offered option.
  5. Enter the code provided by that method. Look for the Epic success message and confirm that the method appears enabled in account settings.

Epic describes this process in its official 2FA setup instructions. Menu labels and available factors can change, so use the methods shown in your own account rather than following screenshots from untrusted sites.

What is Fortnite 2FA, and why does it matter?

2FA adds a second proof of identity to the password. Someone who obtains the password may still be stopped when Epic requires the additional code. Epic states that Fortnite gifting requires 2FA, and some competitive participation or store features may also need it. The specific requirements can depend on account eligibility and the feature.

Security optionWhat happens when you sign inThings to consider
Authenticator appAn app generates a short-lived verification codeProtect access to the phone and retain available recovery methods.
Email codeA code arrives at the linked mailboxSecure that email account with its own strong password and 2FA.
Text message, where availableA code is sent to the linked numberKeep the number current and protect against SIM-swap attacks.

For stronger protection, consider enabling more than one factor if Epic offers it and keep a reliable fallback. Epic recommends having multiple available methods. Do not share any one-time code with someone claiming they need it to give you a skin, V-Bucks or a tournament entry.

Turn on 2FA for Fortnite on PS5, Xbox or Nintendo Switch

The setting lives in your Epic account, not inside your console’s general privacy menu. If you normally press “Sign in with PlayStation,” “Sign in with Xbox” or “Sign in with Nintendo” to access Fortnite, choose that matching sign-in method on the Epic website. Then navigate to Password and security and configure a factor.

Common problem: some players have an Epic account connected to their console that has not been fully set up with its own email address. Epic explains that these players may need to finish setting up their account before 2FA can be applied. Do not unlink platform accounts casually: account-linking changes can be disruptive, and they are usually unnecessary for ordinary 2FA setup.

How to know if Fortnite 2FA is enabled

  1. Visit Epic account Password and security while signed into your Fortnite-linked profile.
  2. Look for a confirmation that your chosen method is active rather than just listed as an option.
  3. If you set up multiple methods, open the method menu and select Make my primary 2FA method for the preferred one, if displayed.
  4. Reopen a feature that requires 2FA and check whether the message has cleared. Some features have other conditions besides 2FA.

Epic’s own help makes an important distinction: having 2FA enabled on an Epic account is not proof that the feature is enabled on the correct Epic account. This is especially easy to confuse if you maintain more than one account or play on several devices.

Why Fortnite still says 2FA is disabled

SymptomFirst fix to try
“Enable 2FA” warning remainsConfirm the Epic account shown online is the one linked to the active Fortnite profile.
You never receive an email codeCheck the email address in Epic settings, spam/junk, and mailbox access.
Authenticator code is rejectedConfirm the correct app account and that your phone’s clock uses automatic date and time.
Console sign-in opens a different profileSign out on Epic’s website, reopen a private browser window, and select the correct platform account.
Cannot find Password and securityCheck that you are signed into the full Epic account rather than a standalone console-settings page.

For a dedicated account-mismatch checklist, see our Fortnite 2FA not-working guide. If the problem is that a gift cannot be sent, the gifting troubleshooting article explains why 2FA is necessary but may not be the only condition.

How to protect your account after enabling 2FA

Use a unique Epic password, keep the recovery email under your control and avoid sharing verification codes. Bookmark the genuine Epic Games account website instead of clicking “free skin” advertisements. Review connected accounts if an unexpected sign-in occurs. Never give an unknown player access to your recovery mailbox or verification app.

Frequently asked questions

Is 2FA required to play Fortnite?

You can generally play supported modes without enabling it, but Epic requires 2FA for some account features, such as gifting. Eligibility rules for other features can vary.

Is Fortnite 2FA free?

Epic does not charge a fee to turn on 2FA. Avoid websites that demand a payment to “unlock” it.

Can I use more than one 2FA method?

Epic supports more than one enabled method where offered, and lets you mark a primary method.

Why does enabling 2FA on my other Epic account not help?

The verification needs to be enabled on the Epic account linked to the Fortnite profile experiencing the restriction.

Does 2FA guarantee a free Fortnite skin?

No. Epic has described certain rewards associated with security setup, but rewards and eligibility can change. Do not promise a specific current cosmetic unless Epic explicitly lists it for the account and date.
