How to Convert HEIC to JPG on iPhone: Existing Photos vs Future Shots

To make your iPhone take JPG photos instead of HEIC, open Settings → Camera → Formats → Most Compatible. That changes the format of future photos; it does not convert the HEIC files already in your library. For existing pictures, export a JPEG copy with a conversion-capable app or a Mac’s Photos or Preview app. The distinction prevents the most common HEIC-to-JPG mistake.

HEIC vs JPG: which one should you use?

HEIC is a common filename extension for images encoded using the High Efficiency Image File Format (HEIF). iPhones can use it to save good-quality photos in less storage space than comparable JPEG files. JPG or JPEG is more universally accepted by older photo editors, application forms and websites. Neither format is inherently “better” in every situation: HEIC favors efficient storage, while JPG favors compatibility.

QuestionHEIC / HEIFJPG / JPEG
Typical iPhone settingHigh EfficiencyMost Compatible
File sizeOften smaller at similar visual qualityOften larger
Older software supportMay need a converterBroad compatibility
Suitable for uploading to restrictive formsOnly if the service accepts itFrequently the safer choice

Apple documents these tradeoffs in its official HEIF and HEVC support article, which was updated December 5, 2025.

Method 1: Save future iPhone photos as JPG

  1. Open Settings on your iPhone.
  2. Scroll to Camera (on some interface versions, find it within the Apps section).
  3. Open Formats.
  4. Select Most Compatible.
  5. Take a new normal photo and inspect the exported file format if needed.

This setting affects new captures on devices that support HEIF/HEVC recording. It may also change how new videos are encoded, because Apple’s compatibility mode favors H.264 for video. To return to space-saving capture, choose High Efficiency. If you cannot find Formats, check whether your iPhone actually supports the high-efficiency capture setting and which Camera options its software version exposes.

Method 2: Convert an existing HEIC image without changing everything

Sometimes only one file needs to be sent to a school portal, job application or older editing tool. You do not need to switch your entire photo library’s recording format. Instead, create a JPEG copy of that file through an app that offers image format conversion. Depending on your iPhone’s iOS version, a Files quick action or a Shortcuts workflow with a Convert Image action can serve this purpose.

  1. Find the original image in Photos or Files.
  2. Make or export a copy to Files rather than editing the only version you have.
  3. If your Files interface provides the image conversion action, choose Convert Image and then JPEG; available quick actions vary with iOS version and file location.
  4. Otherwise, use the Apple Shortcuts app to make a small workflow that receives an image, converts it to JPEG and saves or shares the new file.
  5. Check the output filename or file information before uploading. The resulting file should have a .jpg or .jpeg extension.

Names and locations of commands can change across iOS releases. If your phone does not expose a built-in quick action, use the Mac method below rather than installing an unknown converter just to finish one upload.

Method 3: Convert HEIC to JPG on a Mac using Preview

  1. Transfer or open the HEIC photo on your Mac.
  2. Double-click the image to open it in Preview, or open it in Photos.
  3. Choose File → Export (in Photos, use its image-export option).
  4. Set the output format to JPEG and choose the desired quality.
  5. Save the file under a clear name and compare the new JPEG with the original.

This is the example Apple provides in its format-support guidance. You can keep the HEIC original untouched and send only the JPEG copy to a service that requires it.

Will sharing an HEIC photo automatically turn it into JPG?

Sometimes. Apple notes that when a receiving app or device cannot handle the high-efficiency format, sharing via certain methods such as email, Messages or AirDrop might convert a file to a more compatible format. That is not a guarantee for every recipient, app or transfer option. The safest test is to inspect the actual attachment after export, especially if the receiving website only permits JPG uploads.

Import behavior can also depend on whether an iPhone is set to preserve originals. Do not assume that a JPG received on a computer proves the photo was stored as JPG on the iPhone beforehand.

Why your HEIC-to-JPG conversion is not working

SymptomReasonFix
Old images are still HEICMost Compatible changes future captures onlyExport existing photos individually or in a supported batch workflow
File looks like JPG but upload failsRenaming the extension does not convert the formatUse an actual Export or Convert Image command
Photos show different extensions after sharingDestination app may choose a compatible formatInspect the file received by the destination

Privacy and image quality: two important warnings

Photos can contain sensitive locations, personal documents or identifying faces. Avoid uploading private images to arbitrary online conversion sites when built-in software can complete the job. A local export also gives you clearer control over what happens to the original and its metadata.

JPEG uses lossy compression. Converting an image repeatedly, especially at lower output quality, can introduce visible artifacts. Keep the original HEIC as an archive, create one high-quality JPEG export and resize only if the destination requires smaller dimensions. Do not simply change “.heic” to “.jpg” in a filename: a label change is not a format conversion.

Frequently asked questions

Does Most Compatible convert existing HEIC photos?

No. It changes how new supported captures are saved. Existing files must be exported or converted separately.

Is JPG the same as JPEG?

Yes. Those extensions are commonly used for the same JPEG image format.

Can I change HEIC to JPG by renaming the file?

No. You must export or encode the photo in the JPEG format, not simply rename its extension.

Does Apple recommend HEIC or JPG?

Apple explains that HEIF saves storage space efficiently while Most Compatible offers broader compatibility. Choose according to your device and your intended recipient.

The easy rule: Settings → Camera → Formats → Most Compatible for all your new photos; use Export/Convert Image for an existing HEIC file.
