How to Add Friends in Fortnite on PC, PlayStation, Xbox and Switch
To add a friend in Fortnite, open the game lobby, select your profile icon in the upper-right corner, choose Add Friends, enter your friend’s Epic Games display name and send the request. Once they accept, you can find them in your Epic friends list even if they are on another supported platform. You do not have to own the same console to be Epic friends, although cross-platform matchmaking needs compatible game and privacy settings.
Add a friend in Fortnite: the quick steps
- Launch Fortnite and wait for the lobby. Make sure you are signed in to the Epic account you actually want to use.
- Open your profile or social panel. Epic’s official help currently identifies the profile icon near the upper-right corner of the lobby.
- Select Add Friends. Look for the person-plus icon or a similarly named control; UI placements can change after major game updates.
- Enter the correct Epic display name. A console gamertag may not be identical to an Epic display name.
- Choose the matching account and send the request. Confirm that you selected the right profile before submitting.
- Ask your friend to accept. Sending a request does not automatically create a mutual friendship.
These steps follow Epic’s official Fortnite add-friends instructions. If your Fortnite UI looks different, start from the social/profile area rather than relying on the exact button position shown in an old video.
What is an Epic display name, and where can you find it?
The Epic display name identifies a player within Epic’s account system. This is the name your friend should give you for a reliable cross-platform request. A PlayStation Online ID, Xbox gamertag or Nintendo account nickname is a separate platform identifier and might not be the name Epic’s search requires.
Ask your friend to look at their signed-in Epic profile or Fortnite social panel. Avoid sending screenshots that expose email addresses, payment details or private account information. If multiple players use similar names, double-check the profile before adding anyone. The safest approach is to have the other player read their exact Epic display name rather than guessing spelling.
Fortnite friends on PS5, PS4, Xbox, Switch and PC
| Your device | What to do | What to double-check |
|---|---|---|
| Windows PC | Use Fortnite’s social panel or your Epic Games Launcher friends list | Correct Epic account signed in |
| PlayStation 4 / PS5 | Open Fortnite lobby, profile and Add Friends | Crossplay and child/family settings |
| Xbox | Use the in-game Epic friend request flow | Xbox privacy settings and Epic name |
| Nintendo Switch | Use Fortnite’s social screen | Account linking and friend-request permissions |
Having an Epic friend is not the same as making every Fortnite playlist compatible. Game modes, platform restrictions and privacy policies may limit who can join particular matches. To review the platform-specific options, see our Fortnite crossplay settings guide.
How to accept a friend request in Fortnite
Have the recipient sign into Fortnite and open the social or friends area. Look for incoming requests, select the expected display name and choose Accept. The new friend should then appear in the Epic friends list. They may show as offline when their privacy settings hide activity or they are not signed in, so do not treat an offline status as a failed request.
If nothing arrives, ask the sender to confirm the name and try sending one new request rather than repeatedly clicking. Certain child accounts and privacy settings may need parent or guardian permission before friendship requests can be made or accepted.
Why a Fortnite friend request is not working
The player cannot be found
Check spelling, extra characters and whether you are searching for an Epic display name instead of a PlayStation or Xbox name. If a friend recently changed their Epic name, old search instructions may lead to the wrong result.
Requests are blocked or invitations are restricted
Look for account privacy controls and parental settings. An account with child-safety restrictions may have different social permissions from an unrestricted adult account. Changing account settings to bypass legitimate parental controls is not the right fix; use the supported permissions workflow.
We added each other but cannot join the same party
Start by confirming each player accepted the friend request and is on a supported current version. Check party privacy, the selected playlist and cross-platform matchmaking requirements. A friend may also be in a full party or a mode where joining is unavailable.
Someone appears with a strange or duplicate name
Do not share your login credentials to resolve a name mismatch. Confirm the official Epic display name directly with the person you know. Be particularly careful about strangers using similar names to request gifts or account access.
Fortnite friends and gifting: what changes?
Adding someone makes social play easier, but becoming friends is not permission to access their account or inventory. Fortnite gifting has separate eligibility rules, including account-security and friendship-duration requirements. For the purchasing side, read how to gift skins in Fortnite rather than treating a friend invite as immediate access to every feature.
If the reason you’re trying to add an old friend is a lost Fortnite account, first recover the legitimate account through Epic’s process. Our Fortnite account recovery guide explains the safer starting point.
Security tips for adding players
Epic friends are a convenience, not proof that a person is who they claim to be. Avoid accepting suspicious requests that promise free skins, free V-Bucks or privileged game access. Never provide a password or one-time code to someone merely because they appear on a friends list. If another player harasses you, use the game’s reporting, blocking and social privacy features.
Frequently asked questions
Can PC and PlayStation players add each other?
Yes. Fortnite uses Epic friendships, which work across supported platforms. Playing together may still depend on the selected mode and platform privacy settings.
Can you add someone by their console gamertag?
The most reliable in-game method is to use their Epic Games display name. Console gamertags are not necessarily identical.
Why can I see my friend but not invite them?
Check whether they are already in a party, whether the selected game mode supports joining, and whether either account or device restricts invitations.
Do both players have to send requests?
No. Normally one sends the request and the other accepts it.
Bottom line: Use the Epic display name in Fortnite’s social panel, wait for acceptance and troubleshoot privacy or crossplay only if the friendship itself succeeds but parties do not.
