Windows 11 Remote Desktop: Enable RDP, Connect Safely and Fix Errors

Quick answer: To use the built-in Windows 11 Remote Desktop (RDP) host, the computer you want to control normally needs Windows 11 Pro (or an eligible higher edition). On that PC, open Settings > System > Remote Desktop, turn on Remote Desktop and confirm. Note its PC name, then open Remote Desktop Connection on another Windows computer, enter that name, and sign in with an authorized account. Windows 11 Home can be the client, but cannot host Microsoft’s built-in RDP service.

Reviewed October 13, 2026 against Microsoft’s support documentation. This guide focuses on Microsoft’s built-in remote connection rather than third-party screen-sharing applications.

Windows 11 RDP requirements: host vs. client

The most common setup mistake is confusing the computer you are connecting from with the one you are connecting to. Microsoft’s support guide calls the target PC the remote PC or host. The connecting computer is the client.

ComponentRequirement or note
Remote PC (host)Windows 11 Pro edition for Microsoft’s built-in Remote Desktop host, with Remote Desktop enabled
Connecting PC (client)Windows 11 Home or Pro can run Remote Desktop Connection
NetworkBoth endpoints must be able to reach each other through an appropriate trusted network or secure tunnel
AccountValid credentials for an account allowed to log in remotely
AvailabilityThe host must be powered on, awake, and connected to the network
SecurityStrong credentials, up-to-date software, limited access and preferably a VPN for off-site connections

Step 1: Check whether your Windows 11 PC can host Remote Desktop

  1. On the computer you want to control, press Win + I to open Settings.
  2. Select System > About.
  3. Under Windows specifications, read the Edition field.
  4. If it says Windows 11 Pro, proceed. If it says Home, you can connect out to a Pro host, but Home does not provide the supported built-in RDP host service.

Microsoft’s Remote Desktop guide explicitly states the Pro-host versus Home-client distinction. Do not download an unofficial patch claiming to “unlock RDP on Home”; that can introduce security and update problems.

Step 2: Turn on Remote Desktop on the host

  1. Still on the host, open Settings > System > Remote Desktop.
  2. Switch Remote Desktop to On and choose Confirm if prompted.
  3. Copy or write down the PC name displayed there. You will enter it on the client device.
  4. Use the remote-user permissions area if you need to grant access to an appropriate nonadministrator account. A user must be authorized, not merely know the computer name.
  5. Make sure the computer will remain awake while you need to access it. A fully sleeping or powered-off PC cannot accept an ordinary live RDP session.

Windows generally configures its own Remote Desktop firewall rules for the supported service, but corporate policies and third-party security suites may require your administrator to allow the connection.

Step 3: Connect from another Windows 11 or Windows 10 PC

  1. On the client PC, open Start and search for Remote Desktop Connection. The classic client executable is also commonly referred to as mstsc.
  2. Enter the host’s PC name in the Computer field. On a simple home network, that name often resolves automatically.
  3. Select Connect.
  4. Enter the username and password for an account authorized on the host. Confirm that the identity shown is the expected PC before approving any connection or certificate prompt.
  5. When connected, you can interact with the remote Windows desktop. To leave without shutting down the host, disconnect the remote session rather than selecting Shut Down.

A Windows 11 Home laptop is perfectly suitable as the device you use to initiate this connection. It does not have to be upgraded to Pro unless it itself needs to accept incoming built-in Remote Desktop connections.

Connect from a Mac, iPhone or Android device

Microsoft’s documentation recommends the Windows App on macOS and iOS, and the available Remote Desktop client on Android. Install only a genuine Microsoft client from the appropriate official app store; add the same host PC name and sign in with the authorized Windows account. The app’s interface and supported features can differ by operating system and version. If a PC name is not resolvable on that network, your IT administrator may provide a reachable hostname or a VPN-based access method.

Security: do not expose RDP directly to the public internet

RDP is designed to give substantial access to a Windows desktop, so opening inbound TCP port 3389 on a home router to the entire internet is a bad default. Automated scanners target exposed remote-login services. For remote access away from your local network, use a properly secured VPN, a company-managed Remote Desktop Gateway, or another security-reviewed access solution instead of casual port-forwarding. Apply Windows updates, use unique strong passwords, enable multi-factor controls wherever your access setup supports them, and disable Remote Desktop when it is no longer needed.

Never accept an unexpected remote support invitation, send a password to an unfamiliar caller, or turn off antivirus protection because someone says it is needed to make RDP work.

Windows 11 Remote Desktop not working? Troubleshooting checklist

Remote Desktop switch is missing

Go back to Settings > System > About. You may be on Windows 11 Home, or the device could be managed by an organization that restricts the setting. Home users should use a supported alternative, such as Microsoft’s Quick Assist for attended help, rather than unsupported RDP host modifications.

“Remote Desktop can’t connect to the remote computer”

Check the host’s power state and network first. Confirm Remote Desktop is enabled on the host, verify the exact PC name, and try both devices on the same trusted local network. If it works locally but not remotely, the issue is often routing, VPN or firewall policy rather than an incorrect app setting.

It asks for credentials repeatedly

Check that you’re using an account permitted on the host and that you entered its username in the form expected by your setup (local account, Microsoft account or organizational account). Confirm the password by signing into the host directly if you control it. A device PIN is not always interchangeable with the full account password in a remote-login prompt.

Connection is slow, blurry or freezes

Test both networks, especially the host’s upload speed and Wi-Fi signal. Reduce unnecessary background downloads, prefer Ethernet where available, and lower display resolution or visual features in the connection settings if necessary. A high-refresh multi-monitor setup can be more demanding than a single modest display.

Host goes offline after a few minutes

Review Windows power and sleep settings. Keeping the screen off is different from keeping the entire PC awake. On laptops, closing the lid may also trigger sleep. Choose energy settings appropriate to your hardware and security needs; do not leave a shared machine accessible unattended.

Should you use RDP, Quick Assist or a third-party remote tool?

Choose RDP when you need full remote access to a machine you administer, with proper permissions and network protections. Choose Quick Assist for an attended support session in which someone at the other end can approve sharing. If you are only trying to transfer files between your own PCs, a shared folder or trusted cloud service may be simpler and present less risk.

If you’re setting up or recovering a new Windows system first, our Windows 11 bootable USB guide uses Microsoft’s official installation media, and our Windows 11 reset guide explains the separate recovery process. Neither should be necessary simply to switch on RDP.

Frequently asked questions

Does Windows 11 Home have RDP?

It has the ability to use a Remote Desktop client, but it does not act as the supported built-in Remote Desktop host.

Can I connect without knowing the host’s PC name?

Within a managed environment, an administrator may provide a hostname or other secure connection details. Do not guess random public addresses or bypass network security to find a machine.

Does using RDP automatically make the internet connection private?

No. The remote-login mechanism does not replace a network-access security plan. Use appropriate gateway or VPN controls for off-network access.
