How to Update Google Chrome on Windows, Mac and Android
Keeping Google Chrome updated is important because browser updates include security fixes, stability improvements and compatibility changes. Chrome normally updates automatically, but you can also check manually.
Update Chrome on Windows or Mac
- Open Chrome.
- Select the three-dot menu in the top-right corner.
- Choose Help and then About Google Chrome.
- Chrome checks for an available update automatically.
- If an update is installed, select Relaunch to apply it.
If you do not see a Relaunch option and the About page says Chrome is up to date, no further action is needed.
Will Chrome close my tabs?
On desktop, Chrome normally restores regular windows and tabs after relaunching for an update. Incognito windows do not reopen, so save anything important before restarting.
Update Chrome on Android
- Open the Google Play Store.
- Tap your profile icon.
- Choose Manage apps & device.
- Look under available updates for Chrome.
- Tap Update if a new version is available.
Google currently lists Android 10 or later as the supported baseline for Chrome on Android.
Check the installed Chrome version
On a computer, open Help > About Google Chrome. The version number appears below the Google Chrome heading. On Android, open Chrome and go to Settings > About Chrome.
What if Chrome will not update?
- Restart Chrome and the computer or phone.
- Check that the device has enough free storage.
- Make sure the internet connection is stable.
- On a managed work or school device, an administrator may control updates.
- On Android, check Play Store update settings and pending downloads.
- On desktop, reinstall Chrome from the official site only if normal updating repeatedly fails.
Windows, Mac and Linux differences
Chrome normally handles updates in the background on Windows and Mac. On Linux, updates are commonly delivered through the system’s package manager. Chromebook users update Chrome by updating ChromeOS.
Avoid fake Chrome update warnings
Do not install a browser update from a random website banner, pop-up or downloaded executable offered by an unfamiliar page. Check updates through Chrome’s About page, the official Chrome site or the official app store for your device.
Current desktop requirements
Google currently lists Windows 10 or later for supported Intel-based Windows systems and macOS 13 Ventura or later for Mac. Requirements can change, so check Google’s official Chrome system-requirements page when using older hardware.
Bottom line
For most users, the safest update method is built into Chrome itself: open Help > About Google Chrome, let Chrome check for updates, and relaunch when prompted. On Android, use Google Play.
