Quick answer: In standard outdoor ultimate frisbee (officially simply ultimate), two teams of up to seven players try to catch a flying disc in the other team’s end zone. A completed scoring pass is worth one point. A player holding the disc cannot run with it; they must stop and establish a pivot, then pass before a legal defender’s stall count reaches ten. Incomplete passes, interceptions, out-of-bounds discs and certain violations turn possession over to the other team.

The important qualification is which rule set the game uses. This guide follows the USA Ultimate 2026–2027 Official Rules for standard outdoor ultimate. Casual pickup, youth, indoor, mixed and tournament games may modify field size, player count or game length. The format should be agreed before play.

What is a turnover?Usually an incomplete pass, interception, disc out of bounds, stall or relevant violation
Standard game target?First to 15; halftime target 8, subject to game and event caps
How does a point begin? The defending team throws a “pull” to the offense
Are there referees?Players usually make calls themselves; observers may assist in sanctioned events

How do you play ultimate frisbee?

  1. Set your end zones. Mark two scoring areas, one at each end of the playing field. Each team attacks a different end zone.
  2. Start with a pull. The defensive team throws the disc downfield. The receiving team becomes the offense.
  3. Catch and pass. The thrower can pivot but cannot run while carrying the disc. Teammates without the disc cut into open space to receive a pass.
  4. Score with a catch. A player earns one point for their team by legally catching an offensive teammate’s pass in the attacking end zone.
  5. Switch on turnovers. If a pass lands incomplete, is intercepted or goes out of bounds, the other team takes possession at the appropriate location and attacks in the opposite direction.
  6. Reset after each goal. Teams change which end they defend and prepare for the next pull under the event’s restart procedures.

For a first game, focus on just three concepts: you must pass to advance, catches score, and turnovers reverse the attack. The positioning and more complex foul calls become intuitive after a few points.

Scoring rules: when does a catch count?

To score, an in-bounds offensive player must establish possession of a legal pass while satisfying the end-zone requirements. Merely tossing the disc over the end-zone line does not score. Nor does catching it outside the attacking end zone and running across while carrying it. That second situation is a travel violation, not a touchdown.

Example: you catch the disc one step short of the goal line, then stop. You cannot run the remaining step into the end zone. Establish your pivot at the proper point and throw to a teammate who can complete a catch beyond the line. If you catch the disc in the end zone your team is defending, you have gained possession but not scored.

Can you run with the disc? Pivoting and traveling

Players who receive a pass while running must slow and stop as quickly as reasonably possible under the official travel rules. Once the thrower has established a pivot, a designated point of the foot must remain in contact with the playing surface while the other foot moves to create a throwing angle. This is not the same as taking a specified number of free steps from basketball. Traveling can be called for changing the pivot illegally, accelerating with the disc or other breaches of the rule.

Unlike most traditional invasion sports, there is no dribbling or carrying the disc downfield. The offense progresses through movement of the disc in the air.

What is the 10-second stall count?

When a legal marker defends the thrower, that player can audibly announce “stalling” followed by numbers one to ten. There must be at least one second between the first utterance of successive numbers. If the disc is not released before the first utterance of the word “ten,” a stall turnover is called. The marker should not count too quickly, and a disputed stall can be contested under the rules.

Importantly, the rule does not mean the offense has a free ten-second countdown from the instant the disc is caught regardless of any defender; specific conditions determine when the marker may start counting, especially after restarts. See the USA Ultimate 2026–27 stalling section for the exact count, contested call and restart details.

Turnovers: five common examples

SituationResult in typical play
Pass falls to the turfThe other team takes possession
Defender intercepts or legally catchesImmediate change of possession
Throw is caught or lands out of boundsOther team puts it into play at the appropriate boundary or designated point
Marker completes a legal stallTurnover, subject to the rules on contested stalls
Thrower hands disc directly to a teammate instead of making a legal passCannot be treated as a normal scoring pass; apply the specific violation/turnover provision

What about a dropped pull? The pulling team and receiving team may have different outcomes depending on whether a receiving player touched the pull and whether it was caught, so apply the pull-specific rule rather than treating every kick-off-like throw exactly as a normal pass. Beginners should simply allow an untouched pull to land or catch it securely if they elect to receive it.

What are ultimate frisbee fouls?

Ultimate is a non-contact sport: players must avoid dangerous contact and cannot deliberately bump, hold or shove an opponent to gain position. Minor incidental contact may be treated differently from contact that affects play. A catch can still be contested, but a defender cannot collide recklessly with the receiver. Players typically make their own calls and discuss what occurred. Contested and uncontested foul outcomes follow different restart procedures.

What happens when players disagree?

Players make calls, acknowledge or contest them, and resolve the situation under the applicable official rule. A contested call does not automatically mean a point, penalty shot or ejection. In many situations possession or positions revert to an earlier state, followed by a check. Be calm and specific about the facts of the play; Spirit of the Game expects competitive intensity without sacrificing fairness.

For a comparison with another passing-based team sport, see our handball guide. Handball allows different legal movement and contact, so do not copy its footwork rules into ultimate.

How long is an ultimate frisbee game?

A standard USA Ultimate game is first to 15 goals, with halftime beginning when a team reaches 8. This is a scoring target, not a promise of fixed minutes. Tournament directors may impose soft or hard time caps to keep a schedule on track. Under the standard rules each team has two team timeouts per half; tournament-specific modifications should appear in the event rules.

A pickup game can sensibly play to 7 or 11, or for a fixed period. Just say so before the first pull. See the official USA Ultimate rules for full scoring, timing, cap and timeout exceptions.

Positions: handlers, cutters and defenders

Many teams use informal position descriptions. Handlers specialize in secure resets and longer throws, while cutters move into space to receive advancing passes. Defenders either match up against particular opponents or use an area-based system. These are tactical roles, not mandatory positions in the rulebook.

For beginners, the most common tactical mistake is running toward the disc all at once. Instead, keep clear passing lanes and make one deliberate cut into space at a time. Short, high-percentage passes are usually easier to complete than risky throws into a crowd.

Mixed, youth and pickup formats

The standard outdoor field allows seven players per side, but an informal match may use four to six if a group has fewer players. Mixed-gender events can have event-specific personnel ratios, and youth safety rules sometimes narrow allowable contact or adapt field dimensions. These are variations, not reasons to misstate the standard seven-a-side rule.

In 2026, check the current official rule year and the tournament-specific appendix rather than relying on rules from a five-a-side indoor league. A source that says “every ultimate game lasts 60 minutes” or “you may run with the disc for three steps” is not describing standard outdoor rules accurately.

Five mistakes first-time players make

  1. Running after a catch: slow down and use a legal pivot to find an open teammate.
  2. Standing still downfield: cut into space rather than waiting for a stationary pass.
  3. Throwing into contact: choose a safer throwing lane and avoid dangerous defensive challenges.
  4. Guessing the stall clock: let the legal marker count at the required pace.
  5. Confusing a goal with a thrown disc crossing the line: the disc must be legally caught by a player in the scoring end zone.

FAQ

Is ultimate frisbee the same as disc golf?

No. Ultimate is a running and passing team sport with two end zones; disc golf is a target sport played by throwing discs toward baskets in as few throws as possible.

How many people are on an ultimate frisbee team?

Standard outdoor ultimate uses up to seven active players per side, plus substitutes. Pickup and some alternative formats may have fewer players.

Do you have to pass before ten seconds?

When a valid marker counts under USA Ultimate rules, the thrower must release the disc before the first utterance of “ten.” The count follows specific initiation, pace and contested-call rules.

Can you catch your own throw?

You generally cannot simply throw to yourself to advance play; a thrower’s reception without required contact by another player is governed by specific turnover rules. Use a legal teammate pass instead.

Can there be a referee in ultimate?

Games are typically player-officiated under Spirit of the Game. Some sanctioned competitions use observers to assist with particular calls and procedures, but an observer is not automatically a conventional referee who makes every call.

Bottom line: to enjoy your first game, remember seven-a-side, catches in the end zone, legal pivots, turnovers on incomplete passes and a properly counted ten-second stall. Respect the specific competition’s 2026–27 rules and play safely.
