Why the Yankees are facing elimination
Tampa Bay won the first two games of the best-of-five ALDS, leaving New York needing three consecutive wins to advance. Game 3 is the first contest of the series at Yankee Stadium. A Rays win ends the series; a Yankees win extends it to Game 4 on Thursday.
Max Fried starts for New York
The Yankees are handing the ball to left-hander Max Fried. MLB notes that Fried entered the matchup with a 5-1 career record and 1.81 ERA in seven starts against Tampa Bay. He also held Boston to one run over six innings in his previous postseason start.
Tampa Bay’s pitching plan
MLB’s probable-pitcher listings have right-hander Nick Martinez opposite Fried. As with any postseason pitching plan, late changes remain possible, especially when managers are willing to use starters and relievers aggressively.
If the Yankees win
A potential Game 4 is scheduled for Thursday, October 8 at 8:00 p.m. ET at Yankee Stadium. Carlos Rodón has been described by New York as the likely starter if the series reaches that game.
