A third shot drop in pickleball is a soft, controlled shot hit by the serving team after the serve and the opponent’s return. The goal is to arc the ball over the net so it falls into the opponent’s non-volley zone (the “kitchen”) or near their feet. When the ball bounces low, the opposing player finds it harder to attack, buying the serving team time to move from the baseline toward the kitchen line.

A third shot drop is a strategy, not a required shot. The serving team may choose a drive, lob or other legal return. The key rule that shapes the moment is the two-bounce rule: the return of serve must bounce on the serving team’s side before the third shot is struck. The official USA Pickleball third-shot-drop lesson describes the drop as a bridge from the baseline to the kitchen.

Why is it called the third shot?

  1. First shot: the serve travels diagonally into the receiver’s service court.
  2. Second shot: the receiver returns the serve after the required bounce.
  3. Third shot: the serving side must let the return bounce, then may hit a soft drop into the opposing non-volley zone.

The same soft technique can be used on the fifth or seventh shot after another deep return. Those later “reset” or “drop” attempts are useful if the team still cannot advance safely.

How to hit a third shot drop: six simple steps

1. Get behind the bounce

Read the return early and take small adjustment steps so the ball is in front of your body. If you reach sideways at the last instant, distance control becomes difficult. Keep enough room to move forward after your shot.

2. Use a balanced, relaxed stance

A slightly open or semi-open stance can help you face the target while remaining ready to move. Bend at the knees rather than dropping the head and reaching with only the wrist. USA Pickleball’s teaching material favors a compact, controlled setup.

3. Keep the paddle out in front

Use a short, gentle motion rather than a large backswing. A compact swing is easier to repeat when you are sending the ball only a small distance beyond the net. Avoid trying to make the paddle do all the work with a last-second wrist flick.

4. Relax your grip

Hold the paddle firmly enough to control the face but without squeezing it. USA Pickleball suggests roughly three out of ten as a useful coaching feel for a soft third shot; treat it as guidance rather than a mandatory measurement.

5. Send a smooth arc toward the kitchen

Aim for a trajectory that clears the net safely and descends into the opponent’s non-volley zone or to a spot where the opponent must strike below net height. A ball that lands too shallow may still work, but a ball floating chest-high is often attackable.

6. Follow the quality of your shot toward the line

Do not automatically sprint all the way forward after any drop attempt. If your shot sits up, a fast opponent may volley it at your feet. Advance in a balanced way, pause when the opponent prepares to strike and be ready to make another controlled shot if needed.

Where should a third shot drop land?

Most learners begin by targeting the non-volley zone or a shallow bounce at the opponent’s feet. A crosscourt target can give more margin because of the diagonal distance, while a straight-ahead target may be simpler when the return is short. The best spot changes with your opponents’ positions, strengths and whether your partner is ready to move with you.

The kitchen is seven feet deep from the net on each side in regulation pickleball. That does not mean every drop must land at a specific distance from the net. You are solving a tactical problem: make it difficult for the opposing team to hit down on the ball.

Third shot drop vs. third shot drive

FeatureThird shot dropThird shot drive
Typical speedSoftFast
GoalNeutralize attack and advanceForce a weak block or pressure the receiver
Best opportunityOpponents established near the kitchenHigh ball or opponent out of position
Main riskBall floats high or falls into netBall sails long or gives opponent an easy counter

A drive is not automatically a mistake, and a drop is not automatically superior. Strong players use both. Some even drive the third shot and drop the fifth when the counterattack becomes less aggressive.

Five problems and how to fix them

  • The ball keeps hitting the net: give the shot a little more lift with a balanced upward motion, not a bigger swing.
  • The drop lands too deep: reduce backswing and grip pressure; focus on sending the ball just beyond the net.
  • Every ball floats high: set the paddle face consistently and avoid scooping with a last-second wrist motion.
  • You rush into the transition zone: take a step or two only after a quality drop and reset your feet before the opponent strikes.
  • You practise only perfect feeds: alternate deep, short and angled returns so your feet learn to adjust.

A 15-minute third-shot-drop practice

Minutes 0–4: place one player at the baseline and another near the kitchen; the net player feeds comfortable balls and the baseline player drops them gently back. Score a success when the receiver must strike a ball from below net height.

Minutes 4–8: alternate feeds to the forehand and backhand side. Focus on moving behind the bounce and reducing the size of the swing.

Minutes 8–12: return the ball from realistic depth. The baseline player hits a drop, advances one or two steps if safe, then tries another drop when the net player’s return is deep.

Minutes 12–15: play points starting at the third shot. Award an extra training point for a successful controlled transition rather than for the soft shot alone.

The times are example practice intervals, not official rules. For scoring, serving and kitchen requirements, see our 2026 pickleball rules guide. For readers learning another racquet sport, our tennis serving rules overview explains where the laws differ.

Frequently asked questions

Is the third shot drop mandatory in pickleball?

No. It is one useful option. The serving team must respect the two-bounce rule, but it can legally choose a drive or another return.

Can you volley the return of serve on the third shot?

No. The return must bounce on the serving side before the next stroke under the two-bounce rule.

Should every third shot land inside the kitchen?

The common target is the non-volley zone or a low bounce at the opponent’s feet. The tactical outcome matters more than hitting a fixed inch-perfect spot.

Why should I avoid sprinting after a high drop?

A high ball allows an opponent near the net to hit downward. Advance when the drop reduces their attack rather than giving them an easier target.
