Monster Hunter Rise on Switch: 14 Weapons, Wirebug, Palamutes and First Hunts

Quick answer: Monster Hunter Rise is an action RPG set around Kamura Village where you accept hunts, track monsters, collect materials and forge stronger equipment. On Nintendo Switch, a beginner should start with Village Quests, test weapon choices in the training area, use the Wirebug and Palamute for movement and prepare at the item box before every hunt. The Sunbreak expansion is separate and should not be confused with the base game.

The main gameplay loop

Every hunt starts with preparation: choose a quest, inspect your target, equip a weapon and armor, and bring useful recovery items. Once in the field, find the monster, observe its behavior, avoid attacks and create openings for your own weapon. Successful hunts yield materials that can be used for stronger equipment. The cycle encourages learning rather than leveling through repetitive weak enemies. A weapon upgrade often changes how an encounter feels more noticeably than trying the same fight with identical gear and no plan.

Village Quests and Hub Quests are different

Hinoa offers Village Quests that guide solo players through a learning-friendly progression. Minoto handles Hub Quests, which can be attempted alone or alongside other hunters. Hub difficulty can scale depending on how many players take part. Completing some story progress in the Village does not automatically mean every Hub milestone has been fulfilled. That distinction becomes especially important if you later want Sunbreak, which has a specific Hub-story prerequisite. For a first session, follow the Village progression to learn core mechanics before tackling demanding group hunts.

Which of the 14 weapons is best for beginners?

Monster Hunter Rise includes fourteen distinct weapon classes, among them Sword & Shield, Dual Blades, Long Sword, Great Sword, Lance, Gunlance, Hammer, Hunting Horn, Switch Axe, Charge Blade, Insect Glaive, Light Bowgun, Heavy Bowgun and Bow. There is no guaranteed best weapon for everyone. Sword & Shield is flexible for practicing basic movement and attacks, while Long Sword rewards timing and positioning. More complex transforming weapons can be fun but require additional practice. Try several in the training area and commit to learning one basic move sequence before chasing advanced builds.

Wirebugs provide movement and combat options

A Wirebug can propel your hunter through the air or support special combat techniques known as Silkbind attacks. The resource is not infinite: it recharges after use. Spend time learning how to recover from a knockdown, travel across terrain and reposition safely before relying on elaborate aerial combos. A poorly timed aggressive Silkbind attack may leave you vulnerable when the monster retaliates. In the training area, practice moving to a specific point and stopping where you intended. Reliable control is more valuable than performing an impressive attack once and failing to repeat it.

Palamutes and Palicoes are both useful

Palamutes are canine companions you can ride to move across the map more quickly, and Nintendo notes you can perform some actions while riding. Palicoes are feline partners that offer their own assistance, including support-oriented skills. The best Buddy choice depends on how you prefer to hunt. A player who struggles with travel time may appreciate riding a Palamute, while somebody learning item management may favor a different kind of support. Visit the Buddy-related services in Kamura to understand your available options rather than treating companions as decorative pets.

Eat Bunny Dango before difficult missions

Kamura’s Tea Shop provides Bunny Dango meals that can offer useful benefits. Before accepting a serious hunt, consider whether the bonuses fit your current target and difficulty. Eating does not replace armor upgrades or careful dodging, but it is an easy preparation step to overlook. New players often head directly from one quest to the next and miss the value of building a repeatable routine. Visit the item box, check equipment, choose a meal and then start the mission. A minute of preparation can save much more time than repeated failed encounters.

Learn monster tells, not just combos

Large monsters tend to show body movements, sounds or positions that warn of particular attacks. Rather than trying to strike constantly, watch what happens after the monster turns toward you or prepares a charge. A successful hunt may involve fewer well-placed attacks with safe retreats. When a move repeatedly catches you, practice dodging it without attacking at all for a short period. That teaches the timing and distance more reliably than memorizing a damage-focused video without understanding the creature’s behavior.

Gather endemic life and use the environment

Different field creatures and environmental details can help a hunter temporarily, including Spiribirds and other useful endemic life. Exploring a little during the opening minutes of a hunt may improve survival or reveal convenient routes. Do not spend every quest collecting resources indefinitely if your main objective is time-sensitive, but learn where valuable aids appear on familiar maps. The ecology and elevation of Monster Hunter Rise environments are part of its combat system, not just a painted background.

Forging and upgrading weapons

Hamon the Blacksmith and other village services help you turn quest rewards into improved gear. A hunter may collect many materials that are not immediately useful; choose a plausible upgrade path and examine its requirements before repeatedly fighting random monsters. Armor skills can matter as much as the defense number, especially after you have selected a main weapon. Do not discard equipment simply because it has a lower rarity if its skills support the approach you are practicing. Building a reliable early set is often more productive than collecting unfinished fragments for several unrelated builds.

Capture versus slay objectives

Some quests ask you to hunt a monster, while others have objectives involving capture or other conditions. These are not always interchangeable. Read the quest text and check the required tools before entering the field. A captured monster may provide a different outcome for a given quest from simply defeating it, and traps do not work equally on every target. If you are unsure what a mission requests, check the in-game instructions rather than guessing from the creature’s health. Doing a hard fight correctly but failing the quest objective is an avoidable frustration.

Rampage quests and the Kamura story

The Rampage is part of Rise’s original setting and progression, bringing siege-style elements and multiple threats to Kamura. It differs from the ordinary one-monster field hunt. Take time to understand installations and quest instructions during its introductory mission. A player who normally succeeds through precise one-on-one weapon combos may need a different approach when managing defenses against several waves. These sequences are part of the base game’s identity and should not be confused with the Sunbreak expansion’s Elgado storyline.

Multiplayer and Nintendo Switch Online

Hub Quests can support cooperative hunts with other players, subject to the game’s limits and platform rules. Local wireless and internet-based online multiplayer have different connection requirements. Paid Nintendo Switch Online membership is required for eligible online multiplayer on Nintendo’s platform, but local play may not require the same internet subscription. Verify each player’s copy, software version and connection mode before organizing a lobby. For the membership options, see our Nintendo Switch Online guide.

When to start Sunbreak

Sunbreak is substantial downloadable expansion content, not the first step after making your character. Nintendo says you must complete the seven-star Hub quest Serpent Goddess of Thunder and own the expansion to access its story. If you are only starting Rise, focus on weapon confidence and base-game progression instead. When you reach the prerequisite, our Sunbreak unlock and Master Rank guide explains how the additional campaign works.

Official sources and purchase checks

Nintendo’s Monster Hunter Rise overview explains the Buddies, Wirebugs, quest structure and early weapon options. The official game page contains further character and multiplayer descriptions. Confirm that any listing you buy includes the base game if you do not already own it; a product labeled ‘Sunbreak expansion’ alone may not be sufficient to start playing.
