Minecraft Armor Stand Recipe: Six Sticks, Smooth Stone and Posing
To make an armor stand in Minecraft, arrange six sticks and one smooth stone slab on a crafting table. Put three sticks across the top row, one stick in the middle of the second row, and a stick, smooth stone slab, and stick across the bottom row. The result is one armor stand that can display your equipment without taking up a storage chest.
Minecraft armor stand crafting recipe
| Top left | Top center | Top right |
|---|---|---|
| Stick | Stick | Stick |
| Empty | Stick | Empty |
| Stick | Smooth stone slab | Stick |
The slab must be a smooth stone slab. A regular stone slab, cobblestone slab or stone-brick slab is not the correct ingredient. The grid is three squares wide, so you must use a crafting table instead of the smaller crafting area in your inventory.
Get six sticks and one smooth stone slab
- Collect wood. Break a tree log, craft it into planks and turn pairs of planks into sticks. Make at least six sticks.
- Collect cobblestone. Mine enough stone with a pickaxe to obtain cobblestone and use your furnace to smelt cobblestone into stone.
- Smelt stone again. Smelting regular stone a second time produces smooth stone.
- Make smooth stone slabs. Put three smooth stone blocks in one horizontal crafting-table row to create six slabs. You need only one for the stand.
- Assemble the pattern. Use the six sticks and one smooth stone slab in the correct positions shown above.
If you have not built the required equipment, our crafting table walkthrough covers the 3×3 grid, and the furnace recipe is eight cobblestone around the outer edge of the crafting grid, with the center left empty.
How to place and equip your armor stand
- Put the crafted armor stand in your hotbar.
- Choose a stable floor or other placement surface with enough space around it.
- Use the placement action to put the stand in the world.
- Hold a helmet, chestplate, leggings or boots and interact with the stand to place supported equipment in the matching slot.
- Interact with the equipped piece to take it back. Inventory and controller interactions may differ by edition.
Armor stands are useful for arranging spare armor at a base, showcasing equipment sets for different tasks and organizing themed builds. Unlike an ordinary chest, an armor stand makes equipped items visible at a glance. The display does not repair gear or protect it from every hazard.
Java versus Bedrock: posing and arms
| Feature | Java Edition | Bedrock Edition |
|---|---|---|
| Basic armor display | Supported | Supported |
| Normal crafting recipe | Six sticks plus smooth stone slab | Six sticks plus smooth stone slab |
| Changing poses by ordinary interaction | Not the standard survival interaction | Supports changing stand poses by interacting |
| Custom poses and visible arms | Can be configured with appropriate commands or data | Pose options depend on edition-specific interactions and commands |
Advice about Java armor-stand pose commands may not work on Bedrock, and instructions about tapping or using a controller to cycle poses may not apply to ordinary Java survival play. Check your edition before following a tutorial promising a specific gesture or command.
Armor stand, item frame or chest: which should you use?
Use an armor stand to show an outfit in your room; use an item frame to display an individual item against a surface; use a chest to store equipment out of sight. A stand is especially effective for a set of armor you intend to grab before exploring a dangerous area. For valuable enchanted equipment, keep a secure backup in storage: an openly displayed item is not necessarily protected from other players or environmental damage.
Why your armor stand recipe is not working
| Problem | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| No recipe result appears | Stone slab used instead of smooth stone slab | Smelt stone into smooth stone, then craft its slab. |
| Only a few squares appear | You’re crafting in your personal inventory | Open a full 3×3 crafting table. |
| A stick is in the wrong square | Middle-row stick should be centered | Compare each row with the table above. |
| The stand will not fit | Insufficient placement space or unsupported surface | Try level open ground with room around it. |
| The stand will not pose like a video | Different Minecraft edition or use of custom commands | Follow edition-specific posing instructions. |
Frequently asked questions
How many sticks do I need for an armor stand?
Six sticks, plus one smooth stone slab.
Is a normal stone slab good enough?
No. The armor stand crafting recipe uses a smooth stone slab, which is made using smooth stone that has been smelted twice from cobblestone.
Can you craft an armor stand without a crafting table?
No. The recipe spans a 3×3 grid, so the personal 2×2 crafting area is too small.
Can I put enchanted armor on the stand?
Yes, you can display compatible enchanted armor. Displaying equipment does not remove its enchantments.
Can you find an armor stand without crafting one?
Armor stands can appear in certain generated village structures. Which structures are available and their layout can vary with the game version.
