How to Take a Screenshot on Samsung Galaxy: Buttons, Palm Swipe and Long Pages

To take a screenshot on most Samsung Galaxy phones, briefly press the Side (Power) button and Volume Down at the same time, then release them. A screen flash or a small preview confirms the capture. Your screenshot normally appears in Gallery and can be shared or edited immediately. On supported devices, you can also swipe the edge of your palm across the display or use a scrolling capture for a long webpage.

Fastest method: Power + Volume Down

  1. Open the app, conversation, webpage or image you want to capture.
  2. Hold your Galaxy so you can reach the Side/Power and Volume Down controls.
  3. Press both buttons at the same time and release them when you see the flash or thumbnail.
  4. Tap the preview if you want to crop, annotate or share it immediately.
  5. Otherwise, open Gallery and look for the screenshot in its screenshot album or recent images.

Samsung confirms this button combination in its June 11, 2026, Galaxy screenshot support guide. Physical button position differs by device, so don’t assume Power is on the same side on every Samsung Galaxy model. On very old models with a physical Home button, the combination may differ.

How to screenshot on Samsung without pressing buttons

On Galaxy phones that support Palm swipe to capture, you can use a hand gesture to take a screenshot. Open Settings → Advanced features → Motions and gestures (or use Settings search to find “Palm swipe to capture”), enable the feature, then sweep the edge of your hand horizontally across the screen. This is not the same as scrolling with a finger. Some budget models, software versions and restricted displays do not support the gesture.

Samsung’s official instructions warn that feature availability varies by hardware and software. If you do not see the switch, you may simply have a device that lacks the gesture; use the button method instead. Do not install an unknown app just because one manufacturer’s gesture is unavailable on your particular model.

How to take a long, scrolling screenshot

Use Scroll capture when the information does not fit on a single screen—for example a recipe page, tall document or long settings list. First capture a normal screenshot. When Samsung’s screenshot toolbar appears, select the scrolling icon, often shown as downward arrows. Continue tapping or holding as supported to expand the captured area, then save the image. The result is a tall picture rather than several unrelated screenshots.

  1. Open a page or screen with scrollable content.
  2. Take a screenshot with Power + Volume Down.
  3. Look for the capture toolbar and select Scroll capture.
  4. Extend the capture in stages until you have the content you want.
  5. Finish by tapping outside the toolbar, then open the result in Gallery.

If Scroll capture is absent, the current screen may not be scrollable, the app may limit captures, or your Galaxy software may not support the toolbar there. Samsung explains the workflow in its official long-screenshot guide.

Galaxy S Pen screenshots and screen writing

On a Galaxy model with S Pen functionality, open its Air Command menu and look for Screen write. This can capture the screen and open annotation controls so you can circle a detail or add a note before saving or sharing. The S Pen method applies only to models that actually support it. A Galaxy A model with no S Pen is not missing a broken feature—it simply uses different screenshot options.

Galaxy models: which screenshot method works?

Device familyCommon methodOptional alternative
Galaxy S recent modelsSide/Power + Volume DownPalm swipe; scrolling capture where offered
Galaxy A seriesSide/Power + Volume DownPalm swipe on supported models
Galaxy Z Flip / Z FoldSide/Power + Volume DownPalm swipe on supported displays and software

These are model-family guidelines, not a guarantee that every device exposes every option. Manufacturers update button and gesture features across Android and One UI releases.

Where do Samsung screenshots go?

Usually you’ll find them in the Samsung Gallery app, grouped under Screenshots or among recent pictures. Some apps let you share the image from the screenshot toolbar without opening Gallery. If a screenshot seems missing, check the gallery’s album view, Recent images and whether your app has access to local media.

Screenshot images are files on your phone; uploading or sharing them is a separate step. Before sending a screenshot to another person, crop or obscure password fields, account information and any one-time codes. Keep private contact information out of screenshots intended for public forums.

Screenshot vs screen recording

A screenshot saves one static picture; screen recording saves the changes that happen on your display over time, sometimes with optional audio. If you are showing a step-by-step fix, a video can be more useful than a single screenshot. On some Galaxy devices screen recording appears in Quick settings or under Advanced features. If you are helping someone on an Apple device, our iPhone screen recording guide covers the analogous workflow; the buttons and settings are not the same.

Samsung Galaxy screenshot FAQ

How do you screenshot on Galaxy S26?

Samsung’s 2026 support documentation lists Power/Side + Volume Down as the normal key method for supported S-series devices. Release after the flash appears.

Can I take a Samsung screenshot without pressing any buttons?

Yes, on models supporting Palm swipe to capture or applicable S Pen tools. Enable the feature in Settings if it is offered.

How do I capture an entire webpage?

Take a normal screenshot, then tap Scroll capture from the screenshot toolbar while viewing a scrollable page.

Why can’t I screenshot an app with secure content?

Some applications intentionally prevent screen captures for privacy, financial security or content protection. Use the app’s built-in share or export tools when appropriate instead of attempting to bypass a restriction.

Bottom line: Start with Side/Power + Volume Down. If you need a hands-free gesture or a taller image, turn to Palm swipe or Scroll capture when your Galaxy model offers them.
