How to Make a Custom Ringtone on iPhone With GarageBand
You can create a custom iPhone ringtone from an audio file you own without buying a ringtone. Apple’s documented method uses GarageBand on iPhone: import a compatible audio file, trim it, then export it as a ringtone. An Apple Music streaming download is not the same as an unrestricted audio file, and protected tracks may not be usable.
Before you start: check the audio file
Put the recording, sound effect or purchased DRM-free song in the Files app, preferably in On My iPhone or iCloud Drive. A short clip is easier to use than a three-minute song: ringtone exports are generally limited to about 30 seconds. If you do not own or have permission to reuse the sound, choose your own recording instead. A track playable only inside a streaming subscription may not be available for import or export.
| What you have | Recommended method | Best use |
|---|---|---|
| Short compatible audio file in Files | Import it into GarageBand | Fast setup with minimal trimming |
| Long recording or song you need to trim | GarageBand | Select exactly the part you want |
| A custom sound for one caller | Create ringtone, then assign it in Contacts | Recognize important callers without changing everyone else’s ringtone |
| Apple Music subscription-only track | Use an independently available, unprotected copy you have rights to | Avoid DRM import problems |
Make a custom ringtone in GarageBand
Apple provides an official GarageBand tutorial for turning a song or recording into a ringtone. The workflow takes longer but gives you editing control.
- Install or open GarageBand on your iPhone.
- Start a new song project and open the Tracks view.
- Open the Loop Browser, choose Files, and locate an audio file in Files. For a voice memo, first save or share it as an audio file you can access.
- Drag the sound into the timeline. Move the clip to the beginning and trim it so the ringtone contains only the portion you want; keep it at about 30 seconds or less.
- Return to My Songs, select the project, choose Share → Ringtone, enter a recognizable name, and tap Export.
- After export, choose whether to use it as a standard ringtone, standard text tone, or assign it to a particular contact. If you dismiss the choice, you can select it later in Settings.
GarageBand may offer to shorten an overlong song automatically. Trimming intentionally is better: otherwise the ringtone might begin before the chorus, word or sound effect you intended to hear.
Assign the ringtone to one person
- Open the Contacts app and select the person.
- Tap Edit, then Ringtone if the field is shown.
- Choose your exported tone and save your changes.
Contact-specific ringtones are useful for family and urgent calls. They do not change the ringtone for all other incoming calls. To change that, go to Settings → Sounds & Haptics → Ringtone.
Why your custom ringtone is not showing
- Only visible in GarageBand: exporting a project as a song is not the same as using Share → Ringtone. Export it as a ringtone.
- Audio is too long: trim the section before export and leave a small margin below 30 seconds.
- Cannot import a song: check whether the track is protected by digital rights management or has not downloaded as an unrestricted compatible file.
- File appears in Files but not in Settings: storing an audio file in Files does not itself register it as a ringtone. Import it into GarageBand and export it using Share → Ringtone.
- You hear the default sound anyway: verify whether you changed the standard ringtone, a contact-specific tone, or a text alert; these settings are separate.
Frequently asked questions
Can I make an iPhone ringtone without iTunes or a computer?
Yes. Apple’s documented GarageBand method works directly on the iPhone.
Can a voice memo become a ringtone?
Yes, if you save a usable audio file and import it into GarageBand to trim and export it. This is often the easiest way to make a personal ringtone you clearly own.
Can I use a whole song as a ringtone?
Not usually. Export workflows impose a short duration limit. Choose a brief portion that starts clearly rather than a long intro.
Will changing the ringtone delete the original?
No. Setting an exported ringtone does not normally remove the original audio file from Files. Keep a backup of the original if it matters.
