How to Recover Deleted Photos on iPhone: 30-Day Steps
To recover deleted photos on an iPhone, open the Photos app, find Recently Deleted under Utilities, unlock the album with Face ID or Touch ID, select the missing photo and choose Recover. Apple says deleted photos and videos usually remain in Recently Deleted for 30 days; once permanently deleted or removed after the retention window, that album cannot restore them.
What kind of deletion are you trying to undo?
| Situation | First place to check | Key limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Deleted recently in Photos | Recently Deleted album | Usually recoverable within 30 days |
| Photos missing after syncing | iCloud Photos and correct Apple Account | Deletion can sync across devices |
| Photo hidden or filtered | Hidden album, Library filters and Shared Library | May not be deleted at all |
| Recently Deleted emptied | Available older backups, if any | No recovery guaranteed |
Recover a photo from Recently Deleted
- Open Photos on your iPhone.
- Go to Collections or scroll through the Photos interface to the Utilities section, depending on iOS version.
- Tap Recently Deleted and unlock the protected album if prompted.
- Choose the image or video you want to bring back.
- Tap Recover, then confirm.
To retrieve several items, tap Select and choose all the files you need before using Recover. Apple’s guide describes recovering all available items as an option on supported interfaces. The photos should return to the main library.
Recover photos using iCloud.com
If you use iCloud Photos, you can also sign in at iCloud Photos, select Recently Deleted and choose Recover for photos still available there. Be certain you are using the correct Apple Account. iCloud Photos synchronizes changes across devices, so deleting an item on one synced device can cause it to disappear on others.
What happens after 30 days?
Apple says items are permanently removed from Recently Deleted after the 30-day window. A photo you also permanently deleted from that album cannot be recovered through the normal Photos recovery interface. Avoid third-party tools promising 100% successful recovery of permanently deleted iPhone images. Claims to recover any photo from any device, regardless of backup or encryption status, are not reliable.
Check whether your photo is missing rather than deleted
Before assuming a permanent loss, search Photos for a date, place, person or recognizable subject. Also examine the Hidden album, filters and any shared library you use. A photo can be absent from a particular view yet remain in your library. If a device was recently restored, photo syncing or downloading may still be in progress; use the official iCloud settings to inspect sync status.
Can an iPhone backup restore deleted images?
A suitable backup made before the deletion could contain data you need, but availability depends on whether iCloud Photos was enabled, how the backup was made and what was included. An iCloud backup and iCloud Photos sync are different services: do not erase and restore your phone impulsively, because the operation can replace other current data and may not restore photos that were synced separately.
What to do before any risky restore attempt
- Confirm you have checked the correct Recently Deleted album and Apple Account.
- Make a fresh backup of current device data before considering restoration from an older backup.
- Read Apple’s guidance about what your specific backup contains.
- Never give an unknown recovery website your Apple Account password or verification code.
- Preserve original backups and avoid repeatedly installing ‘recovery’ utilities that require unusual device access.
How to avoid losing photos again
Consider using iCloud Photos and a second independent backup or export for the pictures most important to you. Test that your backup can be accessed before relying on it.
