How to Make a Campfire in Minecraft: Recipe, Cooking, Smoke and Bee Safety
To make a regular campfire in Minecraft, gather three sticks, three logs and one coal or charcoal, then combine them at a crafting table. Place the coal or charcoal in the center, sticks on the top-middle, middle-left and middle-right, and logs across the bottom row. Take the campfire and place it where you want light, smoke or a simple cooking station.
Minecraft campfire recipe: materials and placement
| Ingredient | Quantity | Where to get it |
|---|---|---|
| Sticks | 3 | Craft from planks or obtain from other ordinary gameplay sources. |
| Coal or charcoal | 1 | Mine coal or smelt logs to make charcoal. |
| Logs | 3 | Collect from trees; use a compatible wood-log type. |
Minecraft’s official Taking Inventory: Campfire feature confirms the three-logs, three-sticks and one-coal-or-charcoal combination. The regular campfire is not the same block as a soul campfire, which has a different recipe and properties.
How to craft and place a campfire, step by step
- Find a tree. Collect enough wood for three logs plus whatever wood you need to make sticks and your crafting table.
- Craft three sticks. You may already have some from exploring or crafting.
- Obtain one coal or charcoal. If coal ore is unavailable, you can use a furnace and smelt wood into charcoal.
- Open the crafting table. The standard inventory 2-by-2 grid is not suitable for this 3-row pattern.
- Place the ingredients. Put the three logs across the bottom, coal or charcoal in the center, and sticks in the other three positions around it, forming a small upward triangle.
- Collect the campfire. Put it in your hotbar, place it safely, and watch for smoke above the block.
If you need help with that 3-by-3 crafting grid, read our crafting table guide. Campfires may also be encountered naturally in appropriate village structures, but making your own is the reliable route for a specific build.
Cook food without keeping a furnace fueled
A campfire can cook up to four compatible raw food items at once when it is lit. Interact with the campfire while holding the food to place it in one of its cooking spots. After cooking completes, the food items become available to collect. Unlike a furnace, a regular campfire doesn’t require you to keep adding coal merely to continue cooking.
Not every ingredient can go on a campfire, and it is not designed to smelt iron ore, transform stone or serve as a replacement for every furnace recipe. If a food item won’t attach, confirm the item can be cooked on a campfire and that all four cooking slots are not already occupied.
How campfire smoke works
Lit campfires release a noticeable column of smoke. Builders use this as an atmosphere effect for chimneys, mountain camps and rooftop vents; the rising particles also make a camp more visible from a distance. Placing a hay bale beneath a campfire makes the smoke column reach higher, which can be useful for signaling.
Smoke is a visual effect, not a promise that mobs will always avoid the area. The block itself is hot and can injure entities that stand on it, so place it thoughtfully near paths, animals and entrances. For a decorative chimney, test the appearance and clearance first rather than enclosing the fire tightly without checking the layout.
Campfires and beehives: why placement matters
One of the most useful survival applications is harvesting from bees more carefully. Position a lit campfire below a bee nest or beehive so its smoke reaches the bees and calms them while honey-related items are collected. You still need to approach the hive correctly and use the appropriate tool for honey bottles or honeycomb.
Our guide to getting honey without angering bees covers those harvesting steps in detail. Build for the game’s bee mechanics rather than assuming a random fire several blocks away will protect you.
How to put out and relight a Minecraft campfire
A campfire can be extinguished using a water-related interaction or a shovel as supported in the game version. Once it is out, it does not cook food or produce its ordinary smoke. You can light an extinguished campfire with an appropriate ignition tool, such as flint and steel, when the interaction is supported.
That makes extinguished campfires useful as decorative wooden floor details in certain builds. Keep in mind the campfire’s visual and collision properties still apply as a block, and game updates can change specific interaction behavior.
Regular campfire vs soul campfire
| Feature | Regular campfire | Soul campfire |
|---|---|---|
| Base recipe fuel/item | Coal or charcoal | Soul sand or soul soil as appropriate for its recipe |
| Flame appearance | Orange | Blue |
| Typical building use | Camp kitchen or chimney | Nether-style or spectral decoration |
| Identical block? | No | No |
Do not substitute soul sand for coal in the ordinary campfire recipe and expect the ordinary output. If you want the blue flame, deliberately craft the soul variant.
Why the campfire crafting recipe is failing
The output slot stays empty
Verify that you have three stick items, three logs and actual coal or charcoal. Put them into the correct slots on a crafting table, not merely your personal inventory. Be especially careful if you’ve confused logs with planks, or the fuel item with an unrelated block.
The campfire won’t cook food
Check that it is lit, that the item is campfire-cookable, and that the four cooking positions are not full. Some processing recipes require a furnace instead.
My bees still attack me
Confirm the lit smoke reaches the appropriate hive and that you aren’t provoking bees through another action. Read the bee-harvesting guide for correct tool use.
Smoke is too short for my signal
Try placing a hay bale directly beneath the campfire and verify the column isn’t obstructed by your decorative build.
FAQ
Can you use charcoal instead of coal?
Yes. Minecraft’s official description explicitly lists coal or charcoal for the regular campfire.
Does a campfire require more fuel once it is placed?
No. You don’t continually feed it fuel to keep an ordinary lit campfire burning in standard gameplay.
Can you make a campfire without a crafting table?
The standard crafting recipe uses the 3-by-3 crafting table, but you can also find already placed campfires in some generated settings.
Summary: Three sticks, one coal or charcoal, and three logs are enough for a regular campfire. Its real value is versatility: cooking, smoke decoration and safer honey collection.
