How Long Is an NFL Game? Four Quarters, Halftime and TV Time

An NFL game has 60 minutes of regulation playing time, divided into four 15-minute quarters. The real time from kickoff to final whistle is much longer because the game clock stops for selected plays and officials’ decisions, teams use timeouts, halftime separates the halves, and television breaks extend the broadcast.

The underlying rules are in the official 2026 NFL Rulebook, Rule 4: Game Timing, reviewed October 11, 2026.

How long is an NFL game? Quick breakdown

PartScheduled game-clock time
First quarter15 minutes
Second quarter15 minutes
HalftimeA separate interval; not counted in the 60-minute game clock
Third quarter15 minutes
Fourth quarter15 minutes
Regular-season overtime, if neededOne period of up to 10 minutes
Playoff overtime, if needed15-minute periods until a winner emerges

If you are planning around a television broadcast or trip to a stadium, allowing roughly three hours or more for an ordinary game is more realistic than assuming it ends one hour after kickoff. Actual elapsed time varies, and postseason contests or major delays can run longer.

Why does a 60-minute NFL game take around three hours?

Game-clock minutes and real-life minutes are different things. The regulation clock counts only prescribed game time; many interruptions stop it. An incomplete pass can stop the clock, for instance, while other play endings permit it to run. The exact rules depend on situation and game time remaining.

Officiating administration, injury time, measuring for first downs, timeouts, quarter breaks, reviews, penalty enforcement and broadcast advertising account for significant elapsed time. A long drive can drain substantial game-clock time with relatively few completed passes, while a quick series of incompletions may consume a lot of real time but little game-clock time.

How many quarters are in an NFL game?

There are four. The first and second quarters make the first half; the third and fourth make the second half. The quarters are 15 minutes each, totaling 60 minutes. Teams switch directions after quarter breaks, and the game uses a distinct halftime interval between the second and third quarters.

Do not confuse an NFL quarter with a basketball quarter or the 45-minute halves of association football. Sports share the term “halftime,” but their clocks and game structures differ.

How long is NFL halftime?

The ordinary NFL halftime interval is relatively short compared with special-event productions; the rulebook sets the applicable intermission rules. Most regular-season telecasts fit halftime inside the broader three-hour broadcast window, but a major event such as the Super Bowl can have a longer planned halftime show. The correct schedule for a specific game comes from the league and broadcaster.

When does the NFL clock stop?

Several common stoppages include incomplete forward passes, plays that meet the out-of-bounds clock-stoppage conditions, team timeouts, scores, penalties and specified officiating situations. In the final minutes, the league’s two-minute warning is another designed interruption. Since the detailed restart conditions differ, “out of bounds always stops the clock until the next snap” is not a reliable statement for every quarter and situation.

What if the game is tied after four quarters?

The contest goes to overtime under Rule 16. In the regular season, there is at most one ten-minute overtime period, and a tie remains possible. In the playoffs, 15-minute overtime periods continue as required until someone wins. Under the current rules, an opening-drive touchdown does not automatically prevent the other team from a response opportunity.
