Anthropic has launched Claude for Google Workspace in public beta on all paid Claude plans, putting Claude directly inside Google Docs, Sheets and Slides. The release has two parts: a Workspace add-on that opens Claude in a sidebar beside the file you are editing, and new Google Docs, Sheets and Slides connectors that let Claude create or edit compatible files from a normal Claude conversation.
The distinction matters because the two workflows solve different problems. The sidebar is designed for work inside the file already on your screen; the connectors are better when you start in Claude or need to work across multiple files.

What Claude can do inside Google Docs
In Docs, Claude can read the open document, see selected text and make changes in place. Small requests can be tightly targeted: fix one sentence, restyle a heading or rewrite a paragraph while preserving the surrounding document.
For larger rewrites, Claude can propose changes through suggestion cards. Those cards show what Claude plans to modify, allowing you to apply or dismiss the edit rather than handing the entire document over at once.
Useful examples include:
- tightening an executive summary without rewriting the full document;
- turning a block of action items into a table;
- reformatting headings consistently;
- rewriting selected copy for clarity or tone;
- using context from connected services while staying inside the document.
What Claude can do in Google Sheets
Sheets is the most agent-like part of the integration because Claude can do more than write text into cells. Anthropic says it can:
- write formulas;
- create pivot tables;
- build native Google Sheets charts;
- add new tabs;
- clean or join data using Python, then write the result back into the spreadsheet.
That creates a useful middle ground between a chat assistant and a full spreadsheet automation. You can ask for a budget-vs-actual report, have Claude create team tabs, calculate the differences and build a summary chart without manually moving formulas between windows.
What Claude can do in Google Slides
In Slides, Claude can create new slides while using the deck’s existing layouts and theme, which is important for maintaining visual consistency.
Anthropic also says Claude can inspect the result for practical presentation problems such as:
- objects overlapping;
- content running off the slide;
- text that is difficult to read;
- new slides that do not match the surrounding deck.
This does not guarantee a perfect presentation. Beta-generated slides still deserve human review, particularly for crowded layouts, brand standards and factual claims.
Ask before edits vs. Accept all edits
Claude for Workspace includes two editing styles.
Ask before edits
This is the default. Claude summarizes a proposed change and waits for approval before applying it. It is the safer choice when you are working in a client-facing document, a financial model or a presentation where each edit should be reviewed.
Accept all edits
This allows Claude to work through a task and apply changes without stopping for each approval card. It is faster for low-risk cleanup jobs but gives the assistant more freedom to alter the file.
A practical rule is to use “Ask before edits” until you understand how Claude behaves on your files, then switch to “Accept all edits” for repetitive transformations you can easily review afterward.
How the Google file connectors differ from the sidebar
The new Docs, Sheets and Slides connectors operate from Claude itself. You can paste a Google file link into a Claude conversation or ask Claude to create a new doc, sheet or deck.
Claude then works with that file from the chat interface. This is especially useful when a task spans several files — for example, reading meeting notes, a spreadsheet and a project brief before creating a presentation.
The integration respects existing Google sharing permissions. Claude does not gain access to a Google file simply because someone mentions its name; the connected account still needs permission.
How to install Claude for Google Workspace
- Use a paid Claude plan eligible for the beta.
- Install Claude for Google Workspace from the Google Workspace Marketplace, subject to your organization’s Marketplace rules.
- Open a Google Doc, Sheet or Slides file.
- Go to Extensions > Claude > Open Claude.
- Sign in to the Claude account you want to use.
- Choose whether to keep the default approval mode or allow edits to apply automatically.
In managed organizations, an administrator can deploy the add-on to an entire domain or selected groups from the Google Admin console.
How to enable the Docs, Sheets and Slides connectors
The connectors are separate from the sidebar add-on. If you want Claude chat to create and edit Google files, enable the Google Docs, Sheets and Slides connectors in Claude.
On Team and Enterprise plans, Anthropic says an owner or primary owner must enable those connectors before members can use them. That gives organizations a central control point rather than allowing every user to connect file editing independently.
Do Claude skills and other connectors work in the sidebar?
Anthropic says the sidebar carries over the models, connectors and skills available in your Claude account. That enables workflows where Claude is editing a Google file while drawing context from another connected service.
For example, a user could build a QBR deck using account information from Salesforce and recent call notes stored in Google Drive, then apply a saved Claude skill that defines the preferred deck format.
Enterprise controls
Anthropic says Enterprise protections such as the Compliance API, customer-managed encryption keys and OpenTelemetry audit export also apply to the add-on. Organizations should still validate their own data-retention, access and approval policies before a broad rollout.
The important security model is not “Claude can edit everything.” Access remains bounded by the signed-in user and the permissions of the underlying Google files.
Known beta limitations
Anthropic’s launch article focuses on capabilities, while supporting beta documentation and launch coverage highlight practical constraints. Depending on browser and account setup, long operations can time out, closing the sidebar can interrupt work, and some third-party inference paths are not supported in the Workspace experience.
Because this is a public beta, these constraints can change quickly. Teams should check Anthropic’s current Help Center documentation before standardizing a workflow around a specific limit.
Claude for Workspace vs. using Claude in another tab
The main advantage is not that Claude suddenly has a different model. It is that context and actions live next to the file.
Without the add-on, a common workflow is copy → switch tab → prompt → copy result → switch back → paste → repair formatting. The Workspace sidebar removes much of that friction, especially when a request depends on a specific selection in the document.
What this means for Google Workspace users
Google already has its own AI features, so Anthropic is entering a highly competitive surface. The useful question is not whether one assistant “wins” every task, but whether Claude’s models, connectors, skills and approval workflow fit a team’s existing process.
The public beta gives paid Claude users a way to test that directly without moving the work out of Docs, Sheets or Slides.
FAQ
Is Claude for Google Workspace free?
No. Anthropic says the public beta is available on paid Claude plans.
Does Claude work in Google Docs, Sheets and Slides?
Yes. The add-on opens Claude in a sidebar in all three apps.
Can Claude edit a Google Sheet directly?
Yes. It can create formulas, pivot tables, charts and tabs, and can use Python for certain data transformations before writing results back.
Can Claude create Google files from Claude chat?
Yes. The beta Docs, Sheets and Slides connectors can create and edit compatible Google files from Claude.
Does Claude automatically apply every change?
Not by default. “Ask before edits” is the default mode. Users can switch to “Accept all edits” when they want Claude to apply changes without pausing.
Bottom line
Claude for Google Workspace is more than a file-reading connector: it gives Claude an editing surface inside Docs, Sheets and Slides and a second path for creating Google files from Claude chat. The public beta is available across paid Claude plans, with useful approval and enterprise controls. The biggest reason to test it is workflow speed — particularly for spreadsheet transformations, selective document edits and presentations that need to stay aligned with an existing deck.
