Aggregate Score in Soccer: Two-Legged Ties and Away-Goals Rules

Aggregate score in soccer is the combined score of two matches played between the same teams in a two-legged tie. Each team normally hosts one leg. The side with more goals across both legs advances, unless the competition’s regulations specify another format. Aggregate score is common in knockout competitions and playoffs, but it does not replace the ordinary score of an individual match.

For example, Team A wins the first game 2–1 and loses the return game 0–1. Across two games, each team scored two goals, so the aggregate is 2–2. A deciding procedure is needed. Importantly, UEFA removed the away-goals tiebreaker for its club competitions from the 2021/22 season; it is not accurate to treat away goals as a universal rule in 2026. See UEFA’s official explanation, checked October 11, 2026.

How to calculate aggregate score

Add each team’s goals from leg one to its goals from leg two. Ignore who hosted each match for the basic addition. The teams do not carry league points between legs; it is the goals that count toward the aggregate result.

First leg (A home)21
Second leg (B home)12

In this example, the tie is level at 3–3 even though each match had a winner. If Team B scored once more in the second leg, B would lead the aggregate 4–3 and usually qualify without any separate tiebreak.

What happens if the aggregate score is tied?

Always consult the competition’s written regulations. In current UEFA club knockout ties that use home-and-away legs, a draw on aggregate after the second leg leads to two 15-minute periods of extra time; if the teams are still tied, the winner is decided by a penalty shootout. There is no extra weight for away goals in those competitions.

Other tournaments can use different tie-break methods: some go directly to penalties, and some competitions retain an away-goals provision. It would be misleading to transfer UEFA’s specific rules to every national cup or qualification format. Our guide to soccer match length distinguishes scheduled 90 minutes from added time, extra time and shootouts.

Why did UEFA abolish the away-goals rule?

Under the old rule, if a two-leg aggregate was level, the side that had scored more times at the opposing team’s stadium advanced. Thus a 1–1 first leg followed by 2–2 would favor the team scoring two away goals. That calculation no longer decides a UEFA club tie. UEFA voted in 2021 to remove the rule across its men’s, women’s and youth club competitions from 2021/22 onward.

The change makes the total goals scored the decisive first check, regardless of venue. When total goals are equal, teams follow the event’s extra-time and shootout procedures. The return leg may still carry a home advantage in atmosphere and preparation, but an away goal is not worth two goals in the arithmetic.

How do aggregate scores appear on TV?

Broadcasters commonly display the live match score along with a smaller agg. or aggregate indicator. If the return leg is 1–0 and the first leg ended 1–2, the aggregate may read 2–2. Sometimes the display specifies the team leading on aggregate in parentheses. Check which team hosts the leg before reading a pair of scores: the home team is usually listed first on the match scoreboard, but the aggregate display can use different ordering.

When a referee adds stoppage time, that playing time still belongs to the second leg and goals scored in it count toward aggregate, just like goals scored earlier. See our separate added-time guide and extra-time explainer for the timing distinctions.

Five practical aggregate-score examples

  • 2–0 then 1–1: team that won the first leg advances 3–1 overall.
  • 1–0 then 0–1: aggregate 1–1, so a competition tiebreaker is required.
  • 3–1 then 0–2: aggregate 3–3; UEFA does not favor the team with more away goals.
  • 0–0 then 0–0: no aggregate goal winner; follow extra-time or shootout rules.
  • 2–1 then 2–0: the team winning both games advances 4–1 overall.

Frequently asked questions

Does a team need to win both legs to advance?

No. A team can win one match, lose the other and still advance with more goals over both legs. If both legs are draws, the aggregate is level and the tie must be resolved under the competition’s tiebreak procedures.

Do penalty-shootout goals count toward aggregate score?

No. Penalty shootouts decide the winner separately; successful kicks are not added to the goals from regulation and extra time.

Does a goal in extra time count toward aggregate score?

Yes, if the tie includes extra time, goals scored during it count in the second leg’s match result and thus the combined total.

Is aggregate score used in group stages?

Group-stage tables generally award points for individual results. Aggregate score specifically describes a combined, usually two-legged tie. Some leagues use head-to-head aggregates as tiebreakers, but that is a different application and depends on league regulations.
