Minecraft Blast Furnace Guide: Recipe, Smooth Stone, Fast Smelting and Fixes
To make a blast furnace in Minecraft, combine five iron ingots, three smooth stone blocks, and one regular furnace in a 3×3 crafting table. Put iron ingots across the entire top row and on both sides of the middle row, place the furnace in the center, and add three smooth stone along the bottom. The result is a blast furnace, which processes metal-related smelting recipes twice as fast as a regular furnace. It cannot cook food, make glass from sand, or turn cobblestone into stone.
For many survival players, the only tricky ingredient is smooth stone, which is not the same block as normal stone or smooth stone slabs. This guide covers the recipe, the two-stage smooth stone process, what the blast furnace accepts, fuel consumption, experience, automation with hoppers, and common crafting or smelting mistakes. The recipe is documented in Mojang’s official Minecraft Snapshot 18w50a notes and remains a vanilla crafting mechanic.

The exact Minecraft blast furnace crafting recipe
| Grid row | Left slot | Middle slot | Right slot |
|---|---|---|---|
| Top | Iron ingot | Iron ingot | Iron ingot |
| Middle | Iron ingot | Furnace | Iron ingot |
| Bottom | Smooth stone | Smooth stone | Smooth stone |
Material checklist: 5 iron ingots, 1 furnace and 3 smooth stone. Use a crafting table rather than the smaller 2×2 player crafting grid. The bottom row must be smooth stone blocks, not stone bricks, cobblestone or smooth stone slabs.
How to get smooth stone for a blast furnace
Smooth stone takes two furnace operations if you begin with cobblestone:
- Mine at least three cobblestone blocks.
- Place cobblestone in the top input slot of an ordinary furnace and fuel in the lower slot. Each cobblestone smelts into stone.
- Take the newly produced stone and place it back in the furnace input slot.
- Smelt it again to create smooth stone.
- Repeat until you have three smooth stone blocks, then put them across the bottom row of the blast furnace recipe.
Be careful when looking through inventory icons: stone, smooth stone and smooth stone slabs have different names and are not interchangeable in this recipe. If your furnace makes regular stone on the first smelt, that is expected. The second smelt is what produces smooth stone. For help with the ordinary furnace, see our Minecraft furnace recipe and fuel guide.
How do you use a blast furnace?
- Place your newly crafted blast furnace on the ground. The front face gives a visual indication when it is working.
- Interact with it to open the familiar three-slot furnace interface.
- Put a compatible metal-related input in the upper slot, such as raw iron or raw copper.
- Place an accepted fuel, such as coal or charcoal, in the lower fuel slot.
- Wait for the smelting progress arrow. Your metal output appears on the right.
- Collect the result, or connect hoppers to feed items automatically.
Blast furnaces are designed for metal processing. An ordinary furnace is still needed for items outside the blast furnace’s accepted recipe set. The block can also appear naturally in the armorer’s house in a village.
What can and cannot be smelted in a blast furnace?
| Input | Blast furnace? | Reason or output |
|---|---|---|
| Raw iron, raw gold, raw copper | Yes | Processes into corresponding ingots. |
| Iron, gold and copper ores | Yes | Processes compatible ore-smelting recipes. |
| Ancient debris | Yes | Turns into netherite scrap. |
| Iron and gold tools or armor | Yes | Eligible equipment can be smelted into nuggets. |
| Raw beef, chicken, potatoes | No | Use a smoker or ordinary furnace. |
| Sand to glass | No | Use a regular furnace. |
| Cobblestone to stone | No | Use a regular furnace. |
| Logs to charcoal | No | Use a regular furnace. |
The game decides compatibility from the item’s smelting recipe, not its visual resemblance to metal. A normal furnace is still useful because it supports recipes that the specialized blast furnace rejects. Our ancient debris survival guide explains finding netherite’s ore source, after which a blast furnace can be used for the compatible smelting step.
Is the blast furnace really twice as fast?
Yes: a compatible recipe that normally takes about 10 seconds in a standard furnace takes about 5 seconds in a blast furnace, under normal gameplay conditions. The blast furnace consumes fuel faster per second, so you do not get twice as many smelts from a piece of coal. A fuel source normally smelts approximately the same number of compatible items as in a regular furnace; you simply finish sooner.

| Block | Typical processing time | Accepted inputs | Villager profession |
|---|---|---|---|
| Regular furnace | 10 seconds per item | General smelting and cooking recipes | None as its normal job-site assignment |
| Blast furnace | 5 seconds per item | Metal ores, raw metals and other supported metal items | Armorer |
| Smoker | 5 seconds per item | Food-cooking recipes | Butcher |
What about XP? The processing speed does not mean more experience per compatible smelted item. Collection of smelted outputs can award experience under the game’s normal smelting rules, and automatic collection changes when the player receives it. The simplest reason to build a blast furnace is faster metal processing, not extra XP or magical fuel savings.
How to automate a blast furnace using hoppers
A compact smelting station can transfer metal materials into a blast furnace and move output to a chest:
- Place a chest for the finished ingots or netherite scrap.
- Put a hopper over that output chest, pointing into it.
- Place the blast furnace above the output hopper.
- Put a hopper above the blast furnace and feed it from a chest of raw metals or ore.
- Use a separate side-facing input hopper for fuel; keep coal or charcoal in the chest feeding it.
- Run a small test with raw iron first, checking that finished ingots appear in the lower chest.
If the top hopper feeds items but nothing processes, verify that the input is a metal-compatible recipe and that fuel can reach its proper slot. If output seems stuck, confirm the bottom hopper points to the collection chest. See the complete hopper direction and chest guide before building a large multi-furnace system.
Why is my blast furnace not working?
| Problem | Check this first | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Recipe does not craft | Are the bottom blocks smooth stone? | Smelt regular stone again; use smooth stone, not slabs. |
| Furnace refuses food | Blast furnaces accept metals, not food | Use a smoker or standard furnace. |
| Sand will not become glass | The input is not a compatible blast recipe | Use a standard furnace. |
| Ore stays in the upper slot | Wrong fuel or no usable fuel | Check the bottom fuel slot or supply hopper. |
| Automation does not send ingots to chest | Output hopper orientation | Point the output hopper into the target chest. |
| Villager will not become armorer | Profession or workstation claims | Check eligibility, access and existing locked trades. |
Use a blast furnace as an armorer workstation
In a village, a blast furnace serves as the armorer job-site block. An eligible unemployed villager can claim it as a workstation when the game’s profession-assignment conditions are met. This can help create an armor-trading hall, but a villager whose trade is already locked cannot freely switch professions just by placing another workstation. The exact profession and workstation requirements are covered in our guide to Minecraft villager jobs.
Frequently asked questions
How many iron ingots do you need?
Five iron ingots, plus one furnace and three smooth stone blocks.
Can I use stone instead of smooth stone?
No. The standard blast furnace recipe needs smooth stone. If you have stone, smelt it in an ordinary furnace one more time.
Can you cook meat in a blast furnace?
No. Blast furnaces process supported metal-related recipes. Use a smoker or regular furnace for raw meat and other food.
Does a blast furnace use more coal than a furnace?
Not more coal per item smelted under normal conditions. It performs twice as fast and consumes the fuel’s burn time twice as quickly, so roughly the same number of items can be processed per coal.
Can you make a blast furnace with a regular furnace as the center?
Yes. One ordinary furnace is an essential ingredient in the middle of the crafting grid.
How do you pick up a blast furnace safely?
Use a pickaxe. Breaking it without a pickaxe does not drop the blast furnace block as an item.
Official Minecraft sources
Mojang’s Snapshot 18w50a release notes confirms the exact five-iron, three-smooth-stone, one-furnace crafting recipe and the blast furnace’s metal-processing purpose. The Village & Pillage release announcement describes the original block rollout. These sources are more reliable for the core recipe than Minecraft mod tutorials that alter crafting requirements.
The takeaway
If your goal is faster iron, gold, copper or ancient-debris processing, the blast furnace is a useful upgrade. Start by making three smooth stone correctly, arrange the five iron ingots and furnace in the grid, and reserve a regular furnace for food and miscellaneous smelts. Once you have enough materials, use correctly oriented hoppers to automate the metal-processing loop.
