Minecraft Villager Jobs Explained: All 13 Workstations and Trades
Minecraft villager jobs are determined by the workstation a villager claims, not by the clothes you want them to wear. Learning which block belongs to each profession helps you plan a trading hall, find useful trades and avoid mistakes before trading. The profession system comes from the Village & Pillage update, with details that can vary between Java and Bedrock editions.

All 13 Minecraft villager jobs and job site blocks
Place the job site within reach of an eligible, unemployed villager and give the village time to recognize it. This table is the starting reference; it does not guarantee that a particular villager will immediately take the profession.
| Profession | Workstation | Why players seek it |
|---|---|---|
| Armorer | Blast Furnace | Armor-related trades |
| Butcher | Smoker | Food trades |
| Cartographer | Cartography Table | Maps and navigation items |
| Cleric | Brewing Stand | Magic and brewing-related supplies |
| Farmer | Composter | Crops and food exchanges |
| Fisherman | Barrel | Fish and fishing supplies |
| Fletcher | Fletching Table | Arrows and ranged gear |
| Leatherworker | Cauldron | Leather equipment |
| Librarian | Lectern | Books and potential enchanted-book trades |
| Mason (Stone Mason) | Stonecutter | Stone and building material trades |
| Shepherd | Loom | Wool, dyes and decor |
| Toolsmith | Smithing Table | Tools and equipment |
| Weaponsmith | Grindstone | Weapons and combat gear |
A villager that is unemployed can generally claim a valid workstation. A nitwit is not the same: it does not take normal professions. Babies cannot work until they grow up.
How to give a villager a job
- Locate an adult villager without an established trade history and ensure it is not a nitwit.
- Place the workstation for the job you want, such as a lectern for a librarian or a composter for a farmer.
- Make sure a different villager has not already claimed that workstation.
- Leave enough space for pathfinding and wait through the villager’s normal work period.
- Open the trading interface to check the assigned job and available offers before committing to a trade.
Job-site selection can behave differently depending on village layout, game edition and nearby villagers. A trading hall with too many unclaimed job blocks is more difficult to diagnose than one workstation at a time.
How to change a villager profession
For an eligible villager you have never traded with, removing the current workstation and allowing its profession to reset can let it take another job. Place the desired new block and verify the trade list. After you trade with a villager, its profession and offers are normally locked: breaking the workstation does not let you reroll it like an untouched villager.
If the villager does not lose the job immediately, check the in-game time and whether the removed block was actually the one that villager owned. Do not destroy every workstation in the village in frustration; another villager may be using them.
Why is my villager not taking a job?
Another villager claimed the block
Workstation ownership is not always visually obvious. Move other job blocks away temporarily and place one intended block near one eligible villager.
The villager is a nitwit or a baby
Nitwits cannot become ordinary working villagers. Wait for babies to mature before testing a workstation.
You already traded with it
Once trade history exists, normal profession rerolling is no longer available. Use another unemployed villager for a new profession.
It is not a working period
Villagers follow daily routines. Try during normal village activity and ensure access to the block without assuming all behavior matches between editions.
Best villager jobs for a starter survival village
The best profession depends on your resources. Farmers can help turn surplus crops into emeralds. Fletchers may provide useful early exchanges in an area with accessible wood. Librarians are sought for book trades, but exact offers depend on the edition, version and any experimental trade-rebalance settings. Armorers, toolsmiths and weaponsmiths can support later equipment upgrades. No single profession guarantees a specific enchanted book.
FAQ
How many villager jobs are there in Minecraft?
There are 13 standard working professions with job-site blocks. Unemployed villagers and nitwits are distinct categories, not two extra professions.
Can a villager change jobs after trading?
Not through normal workstation swapping once trades have locked its profession.
What block makes a librarian?
A lectern. Its trades are not guaranteed to be identical between villagers.
Can two villagers claim one workstation?
Workstation ownership is ordinarily assigned to an individual villager. Conflicts can prevent the second villager from getting the job you expect.
