How to Make a Furnace in Minecraft: Recipe, Fuel and Smelting

To make a furnace in Minecraft, arrange eight cobblestone around the outside of a crafting table’s 3×3 grid, leaving the center empty. Move the furnace into your inventory and place it. Add a smeltable item to the top slot and a compatible fuel to the bottom slot; the result appears in the output slot after processing.

A pickaxe is the easiest way to collect ordinary cobblestone by mining stone. Some editions and recipe variants accept other stone-like materials such as blackstone or cobbled deepslate; the classic eight-cobblestone ring is the simplest cross-edition method. You will need a crafting table, not the 2×2 inventory grid.

Craft the furnace in four steps

  1. Collect eight cobblestone with a pickaxe.
  2. Place a crafting table and open its 3×3 crafting interface.
  3. Fill every slot around the border with cobblestone; leave the central square empty.
  4. Move the furnace from the result slot into inventory, place it on a safe block and open it.

If the recipe stays gray, compare each slot rather than rearranging the blocks randomly. There is only one hole in the recipe, at the exact center.

How to smelt iron, food and other materials

Place the item to process in the top input slot. Add fuel in the lower slot. Once burning begins, the progress arrow fills and the output becomes available. Examples include raw iron → iron ingot, sand → glass and certain raw foods → cooked food. The furnace continues to work while the area is simulated; it is not a remote queue that keeps running with your entire world unloaded.

If a fuel disappears but your item remains untouched, check that the item actually has a furnace recipe; not every object can be smelted. If the output slot contains a different item, remove it to make room.

Best fuels for a starter furnace

FuelGeneral usePractical note
Coal / charcoalRoutine smeltingA single piece can process up to eight ordinary items
Wooden planksEarly emergency fuelConvenient but less efficient
Lava bucketLarge batchesLong-burning; collect safely
Wooden toolsUse up leftoversAvoid wasting valuable upgraded equipment

The furnace may begin burning when only one item remains, potentially wasting part of a long fuel’s burn duration. For a larger project, group similar items together and plan the batch before lighting it.

Furnace vs smoker vs blast furnace

A standard furnace handles the broadest range of ordinary smelting recipes. A smoker cooks eligible foods faster, while a blast furnace processes eligible ores, tools and armor faster. Neither specialized station smelts every item that an ordinary furnace does. Build a regular furnace first; add the specialized stations when your inventory and resource needs justify them.

Mojang describes the furnace’s role in its official Furnace feature. For early crafting, our paper guide explains a separate renewable material that uses the same crafting-table interface.

Furnace not working? Troubleshoot in order

  • Confirm the upper item has a smelting recipe; cobblestone, sand, raw metals and raw foods are easier test cases.
  • Use valid fuel in the bottom slot; water buckets and ordinary stone are not fuel.
  • Clear an incompatible item from the output slot.
  • If playing a modpack, check for modified recipes and server-side restrictions.
  • If an unloaded chunk seems to pause smelting, return to the area where the furnace is located.

Frequently asked questions

How many cobblestone do I need?

Eight ordinary cobblestone for the classic furnace recipe.

Can you make a furnace without a crafting table?

No. The perimeter recipe needs the 3×3 crafting grid.

Does the furnace use electricity?

No. It consumes in-game fuels such as coal, charcoal or planks.

What happens to a lava bucket used as fuel?

The lava is consumed for fuel; the empty bucket can remain available when the interaction finishes, subject to inventory space and current game behavior.
