YouTube Captions Not Showing? Turn CC On and Change Subtitle Settings
Reviewed October 9, 2026. YouTube subtitles can help with accessibility, noisy surroundings and language learning, but the CC button is not present on every video. Viewer caption controls, automatic caption availability and a creator’s uploaded subtitle tracks are different things. Before assuming the feature is broken, check what the individual video actually provides.
Look for the CC button on that video
On the desktop player, open a video and inspect the lower-right controls. YouTube shows the Closed Captions button when a caption track is available. Select it to turn captions on and select it again to turn them off. If no caption track exists, changing a global preference cannot guarantee that YouTube will immediately create one for the video. Test a second video known to have captions before troubleshooting your device.
Choose language and caption appearance
Open the player Settings > Subtitles/CC to inspect available language tracks. Desktop viewers can open Options to adjust font, size, color, opacity and background preferences. Those choices affect how captions appear; they do not rewrite the video’s spoken language or correct a mistranscribed phrase. The Reset option can restore caption formatting if prior styling made subtitles hard to see.
Why captions appear on one device but not another
Mobile app controls and TV/console interfaces differ from the desktop player. Confirm the app is current and look for CC or caption settings within the video’s player menu. Check device-level accessibility caption preferences where applicable. Some videos contain captions only in certain languages, and some creators disable or never provide tracks. Region and account settings can influence the options shown.
Automatic captions are not always accurate
Speech recognition can make mistakes with names, accents, music or multiple speakers. A transcript generated automatically is helpful for rough comprehension but should not be treated as verified legal, medical or technical wording. If you need exact quotations, compare the transcript against the audio and any subtitles uploaded by the creator. The quality of the original audio also matters.
What to do if the button is visible but nothing appears
Toggle CC off and on, reload the video, and try another browser tab or device. Inspect the caption style: fully transparent text or background can make a track difficult to notice. Temporarily disable extensions that modify the video player to narrow down interference. If the issue only occurs with one video, the absence or quality of its subtitle track is a more likely cause than a global YouTube outage.
