When Did Fortnite Come Out? The Original 2017 Release vs. Battle Royale
Fortnite first came out on July 25, 2017, when Epic Games launched the original cooperative game in paid early access. Fortnite Battle Royale—the free 100-player mode most people now associate with the name—was released on September 26, 2017. Both dates are correct, but they refer to different launches. The distinction comes directly from Epic’s 2017 announcements, not from a later anniversary estimate.
If you have seen July 2017, September 2017, or even 2018 listed as Fortnite’s release year, here is how to interpret those claims and what was actually available at each stage.
Fortnite’s release dates at a glance
| Date | What happened | What that means for the release question |
|---|---|---|
| July 25, 2017 | Fortnite’s original cooperative survival-building game entered paid early access. | The first public commercial release of Fortnite. |
| September 12, 2017 | Epic discussed a public test of the new Battle Royale mode for existing Fortnite players. | An early playable test, not the free public release date. |
| September 26, 2017 | Fortnite Battle Royale became available for everyone for free. | Battle Royale’s public free-to-play launch. |
The dates are sourced from the June 2017 announcement by Fortnite creative director Darren Sugg, the September 2017 Battle Royale announcement by Epic’s Donald Mustard, and Epic’s confirmation of the free September 26 release.
July 25, 2017: What the first Fortnite game was
Fortnite did not begin solely as a battle royale. Its first publicly sold playable version focused on a cooperative player-versus-environment adventure: players built defensive structures, gathered materials, crafted weapons and fought computer-controlled threats as a team. This became the experience known as Fortnite: Save the World.
Epic marketed this release through paid Founder’s Packs. Its June 2017 announcement described July 25 as the start of a paid early-access phase. That matters because ‘launch’ here does not mean a finished, feature-frozen version of the game; players could purchase access while development continued.
The original game had Fortnite’s building and combat identity before Battle Royale became the main cultural reference point. That is why accounts that say Fortnite ‘was made in 2017’ can be accurate even when they do not mention 100-player matches.
September 26, 2017: When Fortnite Battle Royale came out
On September 26, 2017, Epic opened its Battle Royale mode to everyone free of charge. Instead of a cooperative campaign against computer-controlled enemies, Battle Royale placed up to 100 players on a shared map and challenged them to be the last remaining player or team.
The official September 19 announcement promised that Battle Royale would be free on PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Mac on September 26. The notice also said Save the World remained in paid early access at that point. Those details make it impossible to treat the two launch dates as interchangeable.
The modes also had distinct economic models at launch. The original cooperative mode required paid access; the Battle Royale launch emphasized free entry. This difference is more informative than a claim that ‘Fortnite itself was always free.’
Why do some sources mention September 12, 2017?
Epic was already testing Battle Royale before its formal free launch. In a September 12 PlayStation Blog announcement, Donald Mustard told players who already had Fortnite that they could try the Battle Royale mode in a public test. The same post gave September 26 as the launch date.
So September 12 is a meaningful testing milestone, but a reader asking when the free Battle Royale game came out normally wants September 26. A test made available to existing owners and a public free release are not the same thing.
Did Fortnite first release on PC or console?
There was no single platform-exclusive first launch in the July 2017 announcement. Epic promoted the original early-access release across PC and consoles, and the PlayStation announcement clearly identified July 25 for PlayStation players. The later September announcement included Windows PC, Mac, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One for the free Battle Royale launch.
Mobile devices, Nintendo hardware and newer consoles became relevant later in Fortnite’s life. Their own availability dates should not be confused with the game’s first appearance in 2017. Likewise, a platform store listing’s most recent update date is not necessarily the original game release date.
Was Fortnite released in 2018?
No: the original game and Battle Royale were both available in 2017. Fortnite expanded its reach during 2018, which helps explain why some people associate that year with its rise. But a major year of popularity or a new platform launch is not a replacement for the documented 2017 launch dates.
The photograph accompanying this article, for example, shows people playing Fortnite at PAX West in August 2018. It illustrates the game’s presence at a later public gaming event; it is not presented as a photograph of the initial July 2017 launch.
How old is Fortnite in October 2026?
As of October 12, 2026, the original Fortnite release is a little more than nine years old, measured from July 25, 2017. Its free Battle Royale mode passed its ninth anniversary on September 26, 2026. If you are comparing different Fortnite editions, always state which starting date you are using.
The brand now includes multiple modes and experiences. For a current practical question rather than release history, see our separate guide to playing Save the World in 2026 or our Fortnite emote controls guide. Those guides address today’s game and should not be treated as evidence about what players could access in 2017.
Frequently asked questions
When did the original Fortnite come out?
July 25, 2017. That was the paid early-access release of the cooperative Fortnite experience that later became widely called Save the World.
When was Fortnite Battle Royale released for free?
September 26, 2017. Epic announced that date in September and identified Battle Royale as a free mode for everyone.
Is July 21, 2017, another Fortnite release date?
Some early-access Founder’s Pack promotions offered a head start before the July 25 launch. This does not replace July 25 as the widely documented initial paid early-access release date. Distinguish any purchaser-only head start from the broader announced date.
Was Fortnite always a battle royale?
No. Fortnite first offered a cooperative survival-and-building mode. The last-player-standing Battle Royale version arrived afterward, in September 2017.
Why do people give two different Fortnite release dates?
Because the title’s original paid early-access release and its free Battle Royale launch happened about two months apart. July 25 and September 26 refer to different products or experiences under the same game name.
