Quick answer (checked October 14, 2026): In regulation volleyball, the top of the net is 2.43 meters (7 feet 11 5/8 inches) for adult men and 2.24 meters (7 feet 4 1/8 inches) for adult women. The same adult heights apply to indoor and beach volleyball under current FIVB rules. Junior divisions often use lower nets. If you searched for “volleyball ball net height,” measure the top band of the net above the playing surface, not the height of the posts or the ball.

The 2025–2028 FIVB indoor rulebook, FIVB beach rulebook and 2025–2027 USA Volleyball indoor rules explain the differences. Rather than guessing from a generic “volleyball net” diagram, use the competition’s actual age division and governing rulebook before setting up the court.

Volleyball net height chart: men, women and junior players

Level (indoor)Female / reverse co-edMale / co-ed
Adult standard2.24 m (7 ft 4 1/8 in)2.43 m (7 ft 11 5/8 in)
15U–18U2.24 m (7 ft 4 1/8 in)2.43 m (7 ft 11 5/8 in)
13U–14U2.24 m (7 ft 4 1/8 in)2.24 m (7 ft 4 1/8 in)
11U–12U2.13 m (7 ft)2.13 m (7 ft)
10U1.98 m (6 ft 6 in)2.13 m (7 ft)

Important: These youth divisions reproduce the age-group variations permitted in USA Volleyball’s Rule 2.1.1; they are not a claim that every school, recreation league, beach league or tournament always uses identical heights. Some organizations publish event-specific modifications. Always consult the current competition instructions, especially if your club describes its divisions differently from USAV’s 10U–18U format.

Men’s vs women’s volleyball nets: why the numbers differ

FIVB Rule 2.1.1 sets the men’s indoor net at 2.43 m and the women’s at 2.24 m. The difference is 19 centimeters (approximately 7 1/2 inches). This is a difference in standardized competition equipment, not a restriction on who may participate in informal play. A mixed recreational game can agree on a height, although an official co-ed league must follow its published rules.

For a gym manager setting up multiple courts, label both sets of pole positions clearly and record the intended division. Checking the top of the tape with a measuring stick is more reliable than leaving a cable where the last group happened to tie it.

Do indoor and beach volleyball use the same height?

For adult competition, yes: FIVB beach volleyball also uses 2.43 m for men and 2.24 m for women. The court dimensions differ, however. FIVB indoor volleyball is played on an 18 m × 9 m court, while beach volleyball is played on a 16 m × 8 m court. That distinction matters when positioning the net and sidelines; using a correct height on the wrong court is not a complete regulation setup.

A recreational beach net may be set up for a casual group at a different height, but do not call it “FIVB regulation” unless the full setup matches the rulebook. Youth beach rules are not interchangeable with the indoor USAV table above; consult the specific beach event instructions.

How to measure the net height correctly in five steps

FIVB Rule 2.1.2 says height is measured from the center of the playing court. Both ends, over the sidelines, must have equal heights and must not exceed the official height by more than 2 cm. Follow this sequence:

  1. Confirm the division. Write down whether the court will host adult men, adult women, junior indoor, co-ed or beach volleyball. Look up the correct specification first.
  2. Set the posts and cable safely. Use a properly installed net system. Do not stretch or overtighten an improvised cable; follow the equipment manufacturer’s instructions and venue safety policy.
  3. Measure at the center. Put a marked measuring stick vertically against the playing surface directly under the middle of the net. Read the top edge of the upper band—not the lower edge.
  4. Measure over both sidelines. Take a second and third reading at the sideline locations where the net crosses the boundaries. Both sides should match each other and must not be more than 2 cm above the specified center height.
  5. Recheck after adjustment. A change to one cable or pole can alter the center sag or cause the opposite side to rise. Repeat all three measurements before teams warm up.

Example: for an adult women’s match with a 2.24 m center requirement, the top edge directly above the center should be 2.24 m. At each sideline, the net may be up to 2.26 m under the FIVB tolerance, but both sideline readings must be equal. Do not mistake that maximum sideline tolerance for permission to raise the entire net to 2.26 m. These measurements are from the floor, not from the nearest chair, support cable or antenna tip.

Does net height include the antenna or volleyball?

No. The height specification refers to the upper boundary of the net, not the antenna above it. Under the FIVB indoor rules, each antenna is 1.80 m long, and its upper 0.80 m extends above the net. It marks the lateral crossing space; it is not the measuring target for the net height.

The volleyball’s diameter and circumference also have nothing to do with the height reading. A ball passing over the net is judged by crossing-space and contact rules, not by adding the ball’s dimensions to the net measurement.

What net height do high school and college players use?

For standard older girls’ or women’s volleyball, the internationally recognized adult height is 2.24 m. For older boys’ or men’s volleyball, it is 2.43 m. The USAV table shows those same values for 15U–18U divisions. But NCAA and high school federations maintain their own publications and may impose equipment requirements beyond height—so a school official must use the governing body for that season. Treat this chart as the quick setup reference rather than a substitute for the meet or match regulations.

What changes for 10U, 11U and 12U youth volleyball?

The simplest mistake is to give all elementary-age teams the same height. USA Volleyball’s 2025–2027 Rule 2.1.1 lists 1.98 m for the female/reverse co-ed 10U group and 2.13 m for male/co-ed 10U. For the 11U–12U group, it lists 2.13 m for both columns. The change should be deliberate: check the age division, note whether the event is co-ed or reverse co-ed, then record the measured center height on your court-prep checklist.

For beginners, a height that matches the division reduces the temptation to throw or lob the ball rather than learn to pass, set, serve and attack properly. To build an age-appropriate session around the correct setup, see our six beginner volleyball drills for passing, setting and serving.

Five common net setup errors

  • Measuring at the posts: The FIVB measurement point is the middle of the playing court; pole height alone tells you nothing reliable about the tape above center.
  • Confusing centimeters with inches: The 2 cm rule is a small sideline tolerance, not a 2-inch tolerance or permission to change the target height.
  • Using adults’ heights for all children: Check the correct age, competition and co-ed status before lifting the net.
  • Ignoring uneven tension: Equal-looking supports can still leave different readings over the two sidelines. Measure each side.
  • Mixing indoor and beach setup: Adults use the same heights, but the court dimensions and rules differ. Confirm the event discipline.

How net height interacts with player rotations

The net is a fixed measurement for the match, but each team’s attacking and blocking opportunities depend on positions and rotations. If you are learning to organize a standard six-player team, our volleyball positions guide explains the setter, libero and hitters. For team lineups, the 5–1 volleyball rotation guide shows how serve-receive and setter positioning change as players rotate—without changing the net height.

Frequently asked questions

Is the men’s volleyball net exactly 8 feet high?

No. The official adult men’s height is 7 ft 11 5/8 in, which is slightly below 8 feet. The precise metric standard is 2.43 m; use the rules’ published converted figure for measurement.

Is women’s net height 7 feet 4 inches?

It is commonly rounded that way, but the published USAV standard is 7 ft 4 1/8 in (2.24 m). Precision matters when preparing a sanctioned court.

How high is the net for a 12U game?

The 2025–2027 USAV indoor table lists 2.13 m (7 ft) for both female/reverse co-ed and male/co-ed 11U–12U. Confirm the local organizer’s modifications before a match.

Is there a separate beach volleyball net height for adults?

Not under the current FIVB adult rules: men’s beach uses 2.43 m and women’s beach uses 2.24 m, just like adult indoor competition.

Where should a referee measure the volleyball net?

At the center of the playing court, then over both sidelines, where the two readings must agree and cannot be over 2 cm above the official height. See FIVB Rule 2.1.2.

Rules reviewed: FIVB Official Volleyball Rules 2025–2028 (Rule 2.1), FIVB Official Beach Volleyball Rules 2025–2028 (net height section), and USA Volleyball Indoor Rules 2025–2027 (Rule 2.1.1). These governing documents, linked above, are the authoritative references; league-specific notices take precedence for modified formats.
