Overwatch Season 5: A Grim Doctrine is live from October 6, 2026, and it is one of the biggest roster-and-system updates of the Reign of Talon era. The season introduces Doctrine as a new Support hero, moves Sombra from Damage to Support, reworks Roadhog, adds the Watchpoint: Grímsvötn Escort map, launches a Halloween event and brings old Battle Passes back through the new Unvaulted Pass system.

Blizzard also shipped a large balance patch alongside the seasonal content, so players returning for the new hero should expect meaningful changes beyond cosmetics and events.

Blizzard’s Season 5 overview and the October 6 patch notes are the primary sources for the changes below.

Doctrine is the new Support hero

Doctrine is a Support built around manipulating lifeforce. Blizzard describes his Eternal Scepter as a mid-to-long-range tool that can heal allies and damage enemies, while mechanical bat-like drones can help the team with healing and attack-speed effects.

His Infuse mechanic empowers abilities, while his Ultimate manipulates health on both sides of a fight by granting allies Overhealth and limiting enemy maximum health. That gives Doctrine a very different rhythm from straightforward heal-focused supports: his strongest value comes from timing buffs, pressure and health manipulation around a team engagement.

Doctrine launched with balance adjustments

The retail patch includes balance tuning for Doctrine immediately at the start of Season 5. This matters for anyone using preview videos or trial-week guides: values from his earlier limited trial may no longer match the live hero.

When comparing builds or ability explanations, prioritize the October 6 retail patch notes rather than older test-period numbers.

Sombra is now a Support hero

Sombra’s role change is arguably the biggest established-hero shift in the season. Blizzard moved her from Damage to Support and rebuilt key parts of her identity around battlefield control and ally assistance.

Blizzard says the new Hotfix ability can target an ally for healing after a short cast and can be used while Invisible without immediately breaking stealth. Cyberspace creates an area that heals allies while applying the new Weaken status to enemies, reducing their damage and healing effectiveness.

The practical result is that Sombra is no longer evaluated primarily on assassination pressure. Her value now depends more on information, positioning, disruption and support timing.

What happened to the old Sombra playstyle?

The Season 5 rework removes or changes parts of the familiar Damage-role loop. Players who built muscle memory around isolated backline picks should expect a substantial adjustment period. Her stealth and hacker identity remain, but the objective is now to create favorable team states rather than simply maximize personal eliminations.

Roadhog gets a major rework

Roadhog also receives a large mechanical update. Blizzard says the Scrap Gun now fires two bursts per volley with a stronger center projectile. His new Trash Compactor ability can absorb incoming enemy projectiles and then return an explosive shot whose damage scales with the punishment absorbed.

This gives Roadhog a more explicit defensive interaction with projectile pressure and creates new timing decisions around when to absorb damage versus when to use his traditional space-control tools.

Watchpoint: Grímsvötn is the new Escort map

Season 5 adds the first new Escort map in years: Watchpoint: Grímsvötn. Blizzard places it inside an Icelandic volcanic fissure, blending fire, ice and the remains of a former Overwatch facility later controlled by Helix.

The map is tied directly into the season’s story. Doomfist returns to the facility to free Doctrine, and Talon takes control of the prison complex. That makes Grímsvötn more than a neutral multiplayer location; it is part of the season’s narrative push toward the end of Reign of Talon.

Mystery Madness: Graveyard Games

The Halloween limited-time mode runs from October 6 through November 2. Players enter as random heroes and can return after death with new random powers, allowing unusual combinations to stack during a match.

The event also uses Offerings. Players complete challenges, collect Offerings and pledge them toward heroes that can be added to the mode. Blizzard says the playable roster expands over time, reaching 20 heroes later in the event.

Weekly Event Passes add another reward track around the Halloween period, while a repeatable challenge can provide more Offerings and Battle Pass XP.

Shadow Monarch collaboration dates

The Season 5 overview also confirms an Overwatch x Shadow Monarch collaboration from October 6 through October 26. The crossover assigns themed looks to several heroes, including Genji, Reaper, Anran, Reinhardt and Lifeweaver.

Because collaboration shop items and event windows are time-limited, players interested in those cosmetics should distinguish the collaboration end date from the longer Graveyard Games event, which continues into November.

Unvaulted Passes bring older Battle Passes back

Unvaulted Passes are one of the most important progression changes in Season 5. Blizzard says revised Battle Passes from Seasons 1–15 can return, giving players another opportunity to earn eligible rewards they missed.

If you previously progressed a pass, the system can preserve eligible progress. Blizzard also says players can work on one Unvaulted Pass alongside the current Battle Pass, with match XP contributing to both.

What is not included in Unvaulted Passes?

Blizzard notes that Unvaulted Passes do not include every original reward type. Exclusions include Overwatch Coins, XP boosts, Mythic Prisms, Prestige Titles and Mythic Hero or Weapon skins.

That means “old Battle Passes return” should not be interpreted as a perfect copy of the original reward track.

Season 5 Mythic rewards

Blizzard highlights Dragon Shaoxia Wuyang as a Mythic Hero Skin and Treblemaker Lucio as Lucio’s first Mythic Weapon skin. Both include multi-level customization and visual or audio effects.

The current Battle Pass also includes Halloween-styled Legendary and Epic cosmetics alongside currencies and other seasonal rewards.

Major balance changes in the October 6 patch

The full retail notes contain many individual changes. Some of the most immediately visible include:

  • Doctrine launch tuning.
  • Sombra’s role and kit rework.
  • Roadhog’s weapon and ability rework.
  • Changes to heroes including D.Va, Domina, Bastion, Cassidy, Emre, Genji, Ana and Lucio.
  • Hitbox-size adjustments across a large portion of the roster.

For competitive players, the patch-note details matter more than a general season trailer because small cooldown, damage and hitbox changes can alter matchups even when a hero’s overall role stays the same.

What happened to the Cassidy and Jetpack Cat interaction?

The October 6 patch removes the interaction that allowed Cassidy to attach to Jetpack Cat’s Lifeline during High Noon. Blizzard’s rationale is that the combination made it too easy to reposition Cassidy into powerful angles while using the Ultimate.

This is a good example of why Season 5 feels broader than a typical content update: Blizzard is not only adding new systems but also cleaning up unusual interactions created by recent heroes.

Team Drives return later in October

Team Drives are scheduled for October 29–31. Blizzard says players can queue, find teammates through matches and keep successful groups together for continued progression through Gladiator Ranks.

Competitive placements need to be completed before participating, so players interested in the event should finish placement matches ahead of that window.

What returning players should do first

  1. Read Sombra’s new kit before queueing her. The Support role changes her priorities dramatically.
  2. Test Roadhog in practice or Quick Play. The new weapon rhythm and Trash Compactor need fresh timing.
  3. Learn Grímsvötn’s payload route. New Escort maps reward early route knowledge.
  4. Check your old Battle Pass progress. The Unvaulted system may let you resume eligible rewards.
  5. Review the retail patch rather than pre-season previews. Launch-day balance values are the ones that matter.
