Verified October 9, 2026: Apple’s iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max introduce a 48MP Fusion Main camera with variable aperture. Unlike software-only portrait blur, the new camera uses six physical aperture blades to change the light entering the lens. Apple describes low-light shooting around f/1.48, portraits around f/1.8, and sharper background detail for groups around f/4, with four manually selectable aperture settings available in the native Camera app.

What is variable aperture on the iPhone 18 Pro?

An aperture is the opening that lets light through a camera lens. A smaller f-number usually corresponds to a wider opening and more incoming light; a larger f-number generally narrows the opening, which can help keep subjects at different distances acceptably sharp. Apple’s new camera changes the opening with a mechanical six-blade design, giving users a physical exposure and depth-of-field control that was previously much more limited on phones.

The source is Apple’s September 9 announcement. For other device announcements, see AVARIXO’s AI & Tech coverage.

When should you use f/1.48, f/1.8 or f/4?

SettingTypical use caseTrade-off
f/1.48Low-light scenes when more light helps.Shallower depth of field can leave more of the background less sharp.
f/1.8Portraits with an intentional subject emphasis.Balance between light gathering and background detail.
f/4Groups and scenes where more distances should look sharp.Less incoming light may require exposure adjustments.

Apple provides example photos for these settings in the launch release. This is a simplified practical guide, not a guarantee of identical sharpness in every scene: sensor processing, shutter speed, subject movement and illumination also contribute.

How to use Pro controls in the Camera app

Apple says the new Pro controls interface exposes aperture, shutter speed, white balance and a histogram, letting users customize frequently used adjustments. Begin in the Camera app and find the Pro control options available on the supported iPhone 18 Pro model; exact button placement can vary with the current iOS 27 release.

  1. Choose a subject such as a portrait or a small group.
  2. Start with auto exposure to observe how the phone handles light.
  3. Adjust aperture according to whether you want more light or more depth.
  4. Check the histogram if the scene contains bright lights and deep shadows.
  5. Change shutter speed carefully if the subject moves or camera shake is a problem.
  6. Review the actual image before making a preset for future use.

Variable aperture vs Portrait mode

Portrait mode uses computational techniques to simulate background separation in an image. Physical aperture changes affect the optical capture itself. The two approaches can complement each other, but the terms are not interchangeable. A mechanically wider aperture does not guarantee a flawless blurred background around hair or glasses, while computational portrait blur can be applied in situations that are not determined solely by the physical lens opening.

Does every iPhone 18 model have this feature?

Apple highlights variable aperture as a new feature of the 18 Pro and 18 Pro Max camera system. Do not generalize that every less expensive iPhone 18 version has the same hardware or professional manual settings without checking its dedicated specifications. Third-party camera apps may gain separate aperture control through the developer API Apple describes.

Does the new camera shoot better low-light video?

Apple describes improved imaging and video versatility, including upgraded time-lapse and Cinematic effects. However, there is no universal ‘better by X percent’ night-video performance metric in the cited announcement. Scene lighting, motion, sensor processing and chosen settings still determine the result; comparisons need controlled testing.

iPhone 18 Pro aperture FAQ

Does f/1.48 mean the most background blur?

Generally it gives a shallower depth of field than f/4 at comparable focus distances, though subject distance and software processing matter.

Does f/4 admit more or less light?

Less than f/1.48 at the same exposure time and sensitivity.

Is variable aperture available on both Pro sizes?

Apple markets the system for both iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max.

Can you adjust shutter speed manually?

Yes, Apple lists shutter speed among the new Pro controls.

Are these photos from actual iPhone hardware?

Apple labels the examples in its Newsroom as captured on iPhone 18 Pro with the new main camera.
