To thank the Bus Driver in Fortnite, press your Emote input while you are still aboard the Battle Bus, before jumping. On a default keyboard layout, that is commonly B; on PlayStation, Xbox and Nintendo Switch controllers, it is commonly Down on the D-pad. If you remapped Emote, use your assigned button instead. A message in the match feed confirms that you thanked the driver.

PlatformCommon default inputImportant note
Windows PC, keyboardBUse your remapped Emote key if different
PlayStation 4 / 5Down on D-padController preset may change input
Xbox One / Series X|SDown on D-padCheck controller mappings
Nintendo Switch familyDown on D-padSettings may differ by current mode
Touchscreen mobileOn-screen Emote controlHUD layout may hide or reposition it

These are common defaults, not promises for custom control schemes. The reliable rule is Emote while aboard the Battle Bus. Epic’s official controls reference explains that controls differ by device and can be customized.

How to thank the driver without missing the window

  1. Join a Battle Royale or Zero Build match that begins with the Battle Bus.
  2. Wait for the bus phase to start. You cannot complete this interaction from the lobby.
  3. Before exiting the bus, press your normal Emote button once.
  4. Look at the lower-left match feed for confirmation that your account thanked the driver.
  5. Choose your landing spot and jump normally. You do not need to open the full emote wheel or purchase any cosmetic emote.

If the bus route is moving quickly, press Emote early rather than waiting for your planned drop zone. Once you leave the bus, the input resumes its ordinary emote function and cannot retroactively thank the driver in that ride.

Why does Fortnite let you thank the Bus Driver?

It is a small social interaction, not an equipment upgrade or combat advantage. The match feed can acknowledge your thanks, and certain rotating challenges may ask you to perform the action. Whether it earns quest progress or XP depends on the quests active in your game at that time; no permanent XP reward should be assumed from every thank-you. It does not increase your chances of better loot, change the drop route or alter matchmaking.

Thank the Bus Driver not working? Try this in order

  1. Check timing. Make sure you are still on the moving Battle Bus and have not jumped. A gray Emote control can also mean that the action is no longer available in that moment; recent Epic notes say mobile’s button can gray out after a successful thank-you.
  2. Check game mode. An experience without the ordinary Battle Bus may not expose the interaction.
  3. Check your Emote binding. In Settings, select your keyboard or controller controls and find the actual input assigned to Emote.
  4. Reset a broken controller preset. Epic advises changing Controller Binding Presets to a different preset, saving, switching back and saving again. Record any custom bindings first.
  5. Restart the game if remapping does not restore the button.

Epic explicitly groups inability to thank the Bus Driver with inability to emote, exit vehicles or mark items in its controller-binding troubleshooting guide. Its control settings instructions explain how to locate the proper tab for your input device.

Is Bus Driver thanking the same as emoting?

They typically share the input, but they are not the same event. While on the bus, the action is interpreted as thanking the driver. After you jump, it returns to its normal in-match emote behavior. This distinction explains why changing an emote key can unexpectedly break the Bus Driver interaction without affecting movement or firing.

Frequently asked questions

Which key thanks the Bus Driver on PC?

B is the common default. Use the key currently assigned to Emote if you changed your controls.

How do I thank the Bus Driver on PS5 or Xbox?

While still on the bus, press the Emote input; Down on the D-pad is a common default on controller presets.

Can I thank the Bus Driver after jumping?

No. You must do it aboard the Battle Bus before leaving.

Do I earn XP every time?

No guaranteed reward applies every match. The interaction can count toward an active quest, but otherwise it is largely cosmetic and social.

Can I thank the driver twice in one match?

The ordinary interaction is meant to be acknowledged once for a given ride. Epic’s mobile notes say the button becomes unavailable after you have done it.
