How to Drop Items in Fortnite: Inventory Controls on PC and Consoles

To drop items in Fortnite, open your in-match inventory, highlight the weapon, ammunition, or consumable you want to remove, and choose the on-screen Drop command. On a keyboard, use your assigned Inventory key; on a controller, open the inventory with the button shown by your control layout and follow its Drop prompt. The available controls and even whether dropping works depend on the experience you are playing.

This guide separates Battle Royale, Creative and Save the World, because a command that works in one mode should not be assumed to work everywhere. You cannot give someone an Item Shop skin merely by dropping an item from the Locker.

Drop an item during a Battle Royale match

  1. Enter an active Battle Royale or Zero Build match. Dropping is an in-match inventory action, not a Locker action in the lobby.
  2. Open your inventory. On PC, look for Inventory in your keyboard binds if a remembered shortcut does not work. On console, follow the inventory prompt in the HUD or check your controller mapping.
  3. Select the slot containing the weapon, healing item or other droppable resource. Be sure you have highlighted the correct stack.
  4. Choose Drop in the inventory’s action menu. For stackable items, the menu may offer a way to drop or split a quantity; choose according to the visible prompt.
  5. Close the inventory and confirm the item is on the ground before moving away. Another player may be able to pick it up.

Practical tip: Dropping supplies for a teammate is best done in a quiet, safe area. Opening the inventory while enemies can see you leaves you vulnerable. Also, do not assume that every limited-time mode enables the same inventory functions.

PC vs PS5, Xbox and Nintendo Switch: what changes?

PlatformWhere to startWhat to check if it fails
Windows PC, keyboard and mouseOpen the in-match Inventory screen, select an item, then use the displayed Drop command.Inventory and Drop key bindings, focused window, and whether your Creative island remaps controls.
PS5 / PS4Open the inventory using your current controller layout; select the item and use the button shown for Drop.Controller preset and any Custom mapping. Avoid blindly copying another player’s button labels.
XboxOpen the inventory, focus the item and select Drop in the action prompt.Customized layout, mode rules and controller input settings.
Nintendo SwitchUse the inventory prompt on screen, select a droppable item and activate Drop.Changed controller mapping and whether the experience supports item dropping.

Epic’s controller configuration guide lists its controller presets, the Custom option and where to edit them. Button layouts can change with platform, presets, accessibility settings or an experience’s own controls. That is why the on-screen Drop hint is more dependable than a single universal button claim.

Dropping items in Fortnite Creative

Creative has a different distinction: the Creative inventory used to choose objects versus the Play inventory that holds equipped items. Epic’s official Portable Items documentation says players can select an item in the Play inventory and use the drop/split action. Its example on a default PC setup uses Z or X for the item-registering workflow, or dragging an item toward the backpack icon. This is a Creative-specific documented example, not proof that Z or X universally drops a Battle Royale weapon.

Some Creative maps deliberately restrict inventory, remove items between rounds or customize controls. If the inventory is missing, check the island’s instructions before assuming your game installation is broken.

Save the World: important item-sharing restrictions

Be especially cautious about advice that says to drop expensive equipment for trading. Epic explains that sharing is removed in Save the World modes where inventory persists between missions, including the campaign and Storm Shield Defense. In those modes other players cannot see or interact with the items you drop. Epic also warns that Player Support cannot restore items lost when you leave a party or are removed after dropping them. See Epic’s item-loss policy.

Why can’t I drop an item?

The item is a Locker cosmetic

Skins, pickaxes, wraps and emotes equipped in the lobby are account cosmetics. They are not ordinary in-match loot to toss on the ground. Use the Locker to equip owned cosmetics; do not follow videos promising that dropping a cosmetic transfers account ownership.

The game mode limits inventory actions

Try to distinguish a normal Battle Royale match from a Creative island or Save the World mission. Some mode-specific rules block dropping or trading, even when a Drop label looks familiar.

Your control layout is customized

Open Settings and inspect Keyboard Controls or Controller Mapping. Compare the assigned Inventory action with the UI prompt. Epic’s controller settings include Custom mappings, so two players on identical consoles may see different instructions.

You selected the wrong inventory area

In Creative, switching between Creative and Play inventory matters. Select the actual equipped item or stack, not the catalog tile used to spawn an item.

The item is not permitted to be dropped

Quest objects or experience-specific equipment may have protected behavior. Treat the game’s current inventory screen as authoritative rather than trying unsafe exploits.

Frequently asked questions

Can I drop V-Bucks for a friend?

No. V-Bucks are an account currency, not an in-match item. Fortnite’s gifting systems and shop purchases have separate rules; players should not give anyone account passwords to arrange a supposed V-Bucks drop.

Can another player pick up a weapon I drop?

In supported loot-based modes, dropped ordinary weapons or ammo can generally be collected by nearby players. A mode may restrict interaction, and Save the World has additional sharing restrictions.

Is splitting ammo the same as dropping all ammo?

No. Where a split-stack action is offered, you can transfer fewer units than the full stack. Inspect the quantity before confirming.

Will changing the Fortnite controller preset fix missing Drop controls?

It may help if the relevant inventory input was remapped, but it will not override a game mode’s built-in restrictions. Check the experience’s inventory rules first.
