How to Delete a Snapchat Account on iPhone, Android and Web
To permanently close a Snapchat account, sign in at the official Snapchat Accounts Portal, select Delete my account, enter the account password, and press Continue. Snapchat first deactivates the account for 30 days, when you may reactivate it. For most regions, permanent deletion follows after another 30 days. Simply uninstalling the app does not close your account.
How to delete Snapchat on iPhone
- Open Snapchat and tap your profile or Bitmoji.
- Tap the Settings gear.
- Scroll to Account Actions and choose Delete Account.
- Sign into the official Snapchat accounts portal if the app opens it.
- Choose Delete my account, enter the correct password, and tap Continue.
Make sure you are signed into the account you intend to close before confirming. Snapchat does not offer a general undo button after its reactivation window has expired.
How to delete Snapchat on Android or a computer
- Open a trusted browser and navigate directly to accounts.snapchat.com.
- Log in to the correct Snapchat account.
- Select Delete my account.
- Type your password when prompted.
- Select Continue to submit the deactivation and deletion request.
Use only the official domain. Websites promising instant Snapchat account removal without authentication are not part of Snapchat’s standard account process and may attempt to obtain your sign-in details.
How long does Snapchat account deletion take?
| Stage | Usual account status | Can you reverse it? |
|---|---|---|
| First 30 days after requesting deletion | Account deactivated | Yes, by signing in through the app with your username. |
| Additional 30 days | Permanent deletion process | Ordinary reactivation no longer available. |
| After 60 days in most regions | Account permanently deleted | No ordinary account restoration. |
India exception: Snapchat states that accounts deleted by people located in India stay deactivated for 30 days and are permanently deleted after an additional 180 days, rather than the standard additional 30 days. Local rules and Snapchat support updates matter more than general blog summaries.
Download your Snapchat data first
If you want to retain some account information, open Snapchat’s official account portal and look for My Data before proceeding. Follow Snapchat’s instructions to request and retrieve any available export. Snapchat says you generally have 30 days after account deactivation to download data; you should not wait until the final day.
An export is not necessarily an exact copy of every snap you have ever sent. If you have important Memories, saved conversations or media, review their separate save and export options before you close the account. Keep personal exports in a secure folder and avoid uploading them to unknown websites.
How to reactivate Snapchat after requesting deletion
During the initial 30-day deactivation window, reopen the Snapchat app and sign in with the account’s username. Snapchat says you cannot rely on your email address or phone number for signing into a deactivated account. Follow the prompts to restore access.
Snapchat also states that its support staff cannot reactivate a deactivated account on your behalf and that permanently deleted accounts cannot be restored. Do not pay a third party claiming they can bypass these restrictions.
What data does Snapchat retain?
Deletion does not guarantee that every record disappears from every system immediately. Snapchat’s support documentation says some data may be retained for legal, security and business needs, including records concerning purchases and acceptance of terms. Read its privacy notices for the full context.
Other people may have independently saved conversations or screenshots while the account existed. Closing your Snapchat profile cannot reach into another person’s device to remove content they already saved.
Snapchat account closure troubleshooting
You forgot your password
Use Snapchat’s official password-reset procedure first. The standard account portal expects you to authenticate before submitting a deletion request.
You cannot find the option inside Snapchat
Use the official accounts portal in a web browser. This route is documented for Android and browser users and is useful if the app menu differs from the instructions.
You deleted the app but the account remains
Removing an app from a phone is not an account-deletion request. Reinstall or sign in through the official web portal and complete the separate account process.
You are unsure about permanent deletion
Consider pausing notifications or uninstalling the app temporarily rather than requesting permanent deletion. On iPhone, consider reviewing the Screen Time usage report before permanent deletion. The latter starts a time-limited path that can eventually remove access permanently.
Frequently asked questions
Can I deactivate Snapchat without permanently deleting it?
Snapchat’s account deletion process includes an initial deactivation period, but is designed to lead to permanent deletion unless you reactivate in time. Do not treat the window as an indefinite pause mode.
Can I recover my account after 30 days?
Snapchat says the normal reactivation window is 30 days. After it closes, its support team cannot reactivate the account for you.
Is Snapchat deleted immediately on confirmation?
No. A staged deactivation and deletion timeline applies, with different timing for accounts in India.
Can a deleted account still leave records?
Yes. Snapchat may retain certain information for legal, business and security reasons, and copies made by other people may remain outside Snapchat’s systems.
