How to Change Language in Fortnite on PC, PS5, Xbox and Switch
To change Fortnite’s display language, open Fortnite, select your profile icon, go to Settings, open the Game tab, find Language, use the arrows to pick your preferred option, and select Apply. This is the path published by Epic Games for the current in-game setting. The menu wording can vary slightly between updates and supported devices, but the language option belongs to the game settings rather than a downloadable translation mod.
Change Fortnite language step by step
- Launch Fortnite and wait until you reach the main lobby.
- Select your profile icon near the upper-right corner.
- Select the gear icon to open Settings.
- Select the Game tab, which Epic identifies with another gear icon.
- Scroll to Language. Use the left and right arrows to select the language you want.
- Choose Apply to keep the change. Return to the lobby and check whether menu text updated.
These six steps follow Epic’s official language-setting guide. If the interface is already in an unfamiliar language, locate the player/profile icon, then the gear-shaped settings tab, and move slowly through the options; you do not need to delete the game.
Where the setting is on PC, PlayStation, Xbox and Switch
| Platform | How to open Settings | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Windows PC | Open the lobby menu and choose the gear icon | Game → Language → Apply |
| PlayStation 5 / PS4 | Open the profile/menu panel in Fortnite | Use the in-game Game tab, not merely console language |
| Xbox Series X|S / Xbox One | Open Fortnite’s main menu and Settings | Pick the supported language and apply it |
| Nintendo Switch | Open Fortnite’s main lobby menu | Check the available Game language options |
| Mobile versions | Open Fortnite’s settings panel when available | Menu layout may differ on smaller screens |
Language selection is separate from the region chosen for matchmaking. Changing text language does not automatically connect you to a different server, make your connection faster or change your Epic Games account’s country.
Why did Fortnite switch back to the previous language?
If Fortnite accepts the change but reverts when you restart, follow this order:
- Return to the Game tab and confirm you actually selected Apply.
- Close Fortnite normally and reopen it, allowing it to save settings.
- Check for a pending Fortnite update in your platform’s launcher or store.
- On PC, make sure your Windows user profile has permission to save Fortnite’s configuration files.
- If that fails, consult Epic’s official instructions for a language setting that will not save. This involves a local configuration file and should be attempted carefully, not used as the first fix.
Advanced Windows fix: only if Fortnite does not save the language
Epic documents a GameUserSettings configuration file under the Windows user’s Fortnite configuration folder. The documented location is %localappdata%\FortniteGame\Saved\Config\WindowsClient. You can inspect it after closing the game, but back up the file before editing. Epic’s instructions describe an [Internationalization] section and Culture= value, such as Culture=en for English. Use only a language code supported by Fortnite, and make sure the section is not duplicated.
For ordinary language changes, use the Settings screen instead of editing files. A manually changed config can be replaced by later updates, and a wrong edit can create an unrelated settings problem.
Does changing language affect voice chat or subtitles?
Not necessarily. Menu text, spoken dialogue, caption languages, accessibility options and party voice-chat settings can be separate controls. The available options depend on the part of Fortnite you are using and the current platform. If you are trying to fix a microphone or party channel rather than translate text, see our Gaming help articles instead of assuming the Language field will solve it.
Can you use a language that is not listed?
Do not install unofficial language packs or account-modification tools. Fortnite only supports languages made available by Epic on your platform and in the current game version. If your preferred language is missing, first verify it appears in the current official list rather than downloading files from a video description or social media post.
Frequently asked questions
How do I change Fortnite from Spanish to English?
Use your profile icon, gear-shaped Settings, Game tab, Language selection and Apply. The order is the same even if the menu labels are translated.
Can I change the language without reinstalling?
Yes. The standard in-game Game → Language setting is intended to switch the language without uninstalling Fortnite.
Does language determine Fortnite matchmaking region?
No. Text language and server region are separate settings. A language change alone should not be treated as a way to change your ping.
Why is my language option missing?
Menu availability can vary by device, active Fortnite experience and game version. Update the game, confirm you are in the correct Settings tab, and consult Epic Support if a documented setting is absent.
Bottom line: use the in-game Game tab and press Apply. Only move to Epic’s more advanced PC configuration repair if the normal choice does not persist.
