How Many Sets in Volleyball? Best-of-Five Scoring Explained
A standard international indoor volleyball match uses a best-of-five-sets format. The first team to win three sets wins the match, so a match can finish in three, four or five sets. Sets one through four are usually played to 25 points, while a deciding fifth set is played to 15. Every set must be won by at least two points.
How many sets are needed to win volleyball?
| Match score | Total sets played | What happened |
|---|---|---|
| 3–0 | 3 | A team won every set |
| 3–1 | 4 | A team lost one set but won three |
| 3–2 | 5 | The teams split four sets, then a team won the deciding fifth |
Those are the possible final set scores in a normal best-of-five match. A five-set game is not guaranteed: when one team wins the first three sets, play ends. The FIVB official basic rules confirm both the best-of-five format and the scoring thresholds.
How many points are in each volleyball set?
| Set | Normal target | Minimum winning margin |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | 25 points | 2 points |
| 2 | 25 points | 2 points |
| 3 | 25 points | 2 points |
| 4, if needed | 25 points | 2 points |
| 5, if needed | 15 points | 2 points |
The target is not a hard ending score. If both teams reach 24–24 in one of the first four sets, the play continues until one side leads by two: 26–24, 27–25 or even higher scores are possible. Similarly, a fifth set tied 14–14 does not end at 15–14; someone must establish the required margin.
Why is the fifth volleyball set only 15 points?
The shorter final set serves as a deciding tiebreak when each team has already won two sets. It uses the same essential two-point winning margin, so the outcome still requires a clear lead rather than simply being first to 15 in any circumstances.
A fifth set might finish 15–12 or 17–15, for example. The 15-point target is the starting finish line, not a maximum score. The FIVB’s 2025–2028 rulebook page provides the complete current formal rules for the set and match.
Do both teams score points on every rally?
Modern indoor volleyball uses rally-point scoring: whichever team wins a rally scores a point, regardless of who served the ball. If the receiving team wins a rally, it scores and gains the next serve. Players rotate clockwise when their team gains the right to serve from the opponent under the rules.
This is why a live score can advance even when the serving team loses the exchange. The older side-out-only scoring systems are not the ordinary present-day FIVB method.
Are beach volleyball matches also best of five?
No. Beach volleyball has its own official rules and commonly plays best of three sets, with the first two sets to 21 and the deciding third to 15, each requiring a two-point margin. Do not apply indoor best-of-five rules automatically to beach matches.
School, college and amateur competitions may use an approved best-of-three or other format depending on their rules and scheduling. The phrase “volleyball has five sets” is shorthand for the maximum in standard top-level indoor play, not a rule for every volleyball event worldwide.
Does a volleyball match have a fixed length?
No. The number of sets, rally lengths, timeouts, substitutions and replay reviews all affect the elapsed time. A short 3–0 sweep can end well before a tense 3–2 match in which several sets go beyond the usual target. Unlike football or basketball, the winner is determined by sets and rallies rather than a fixed number of minutes on a game clock.
For an event you plan to watch in person, allow for the possibility of a full five-set match, not just the duration of a three-set sweep.
Examples: reading a volleyball match score
- 25–18, 25–20, 25–22: three straight sets; final match score 3–0.
- 25–21, 21–25, 25–19, 25–23: four sets; one side wins 3–1.
- 25–22, 23–25, 25–19, 21–25, 16–14: five sets; the last set continues beyond 15 because a two-point margin is needed.
These are hypothetical scoring examples to illustrate the rules, not results of an identified actual match.
Frequently asked questions
Can volleyball be over after three sets?
Yes. A team that wins three sets in a row wins a standard indoor match 3–0.
Does volleyball have four quarters?
No. Volleyball uses sets, not football-style quarters. The number of sets depends on results and the competition format.
Can the fifth set go over 15?
Yes. A team must win by two, so ties such as 14–14 require more rallies.
Is 25–24 a winning set score?
No in the usual 25-point sets. A one-point lead is insufficient; play continues until there is a two-point margin.
How many players are on the volleyball court?
Standard indoor FIVB volleyball has six players from each team on court. This differs from beach volleyball’s format.
Bottom line: remember first to three sets, normally up to five sets total, with a shorter 15-point deciding fifth. The rules are confirmed by FIVB. Explore more sports rules at Avarixo.
