How Long Is a Baseball Game? MLB Average Time, Pitch Clock and Extra Innings

A Major League Baseball game usually lasts about two and a half to three hours, but there is no fixed game clock that ends it after a set number of minutes. MLB schedules nine innings, and the actual duration depends on the pace of play, runs, pitching changes, reviews, weather and whether extra innings are needed.

For a dated official benchmark, MLB reported that nine-inning games averaged 2 hours 38 minutes in the 2025 season. That is a historical season figure, not a guarantee for an individual game in 2026. See MLB’s September 29, 2025 release, checked October 11, 2026.

How long are MLB games on average?

SeasonAverage nine-inning game timeContext
20232 hours, 40 minutesFirst season of MLB’s pitch timer and related pace rules
20242 hours, 36 minutesGames remained significantly shorter than before the timer
20252 hours, 38 minutesOfficial league-reported season average

Those are nine-inning averages, excluding the unpredictable added length of games that reach a tenth inning or later. The numbers are retrospective; do not confuse a season’s average with the planned length of tonight’s broadcast.

Why doesn’t baseball have a fixed ending time?

Unlike basketball or American football, baseball is organized around outs and innings. Each side generally gets three outs per half-inning. That means some innings can end in a few minutes while others involve walks, several hits, pitching changes and scoring rallies. A game normally needs nine innings to reach its expected conclusion, not 180 minutes on a scoreboard.

The visiting team bats in the top of an inning; the home team bats in the bottom. A home team leading after the top of the ninth does not need to bat again. A home team taking the lead in the bottom of the ninth can win on a walk-off before the half-inning ends. Our separate guide explains how innings, outs and walk-offs work.

How did the MLB pitch clock shorten games?

The league introduced its pitch timer for the 2023 season as part of rules designed to reduce unnecessary delays between pitches. Limits on batter timeouts and pitcher disengagements also helped streamline play. MLB’s own reports show average nine-inning games fell markedly compared with the years immediately before these changes.

The timer does not turn baseball into a two-hour fixed-length sport. It governs particular actions between pitches. A game can still last well beyond three hours when innings run long or other interruptions occur.

What makes one baseball game last longer?

  • More offense: rallies, walks and pitching traffic mean more plate appearances.
  • Pitching changes: pitching substitutions and warmups affect elapsed time.
  • Extra innings: teams tied after nine continue into additional innings until a winner emerges under applicable rules.
  • Replay and disruptions: reviews, injuries and weather delays can extend the schedule.
  • Game level: youth, high-school and college formats may schedule fewer innings or have special competition rules.

MLB regular-season extra innings use an automatic runner placed on second base at the start of each extra half-inning, while the postseason is played without that automatic runner. That can influence game length and late-inning strategy, but neither format promises a fixed final time.

How much time should you allow at the ballpark?

For an ordinary MLB game, reserving at least three hours for the action is a practical starting point; allow more for stadium entry, concessions, extra innings or possible delays. Some games end sooner, while dramatic high-scoring or weather-affected contests run longer. If you have travel plans afterward, avoid booking a connection that assumes an exact final-out time.

Baseball game duration FAQ

Are baseball games always nine innings?

MLB games are scheduled for nine innings, with exceptions and special endings. Youth and other competition levels can use different scheduled lengths.

Does a three-hour MLB game automatically end?

No. MLB does not end a normal game merely because the elapsed time reaches three hours.

What if the score is tied after nine innings?

The game proceeds into extra innings under the applicable league and competition rules.

Are baseball games shorter now?

MLB’s official 2023–2025 average nine-inning durations were substantially shorter than the pre-pitch-timer era. Individual games still vary.
