Quick answer (checked October 15, 2026): Hampton National Historic Site in Towson, Maryland, is free to enter. Its grounds are open for walking daily from sunrise to sunset, while the visitor center and ranger-led mansion tours generally operate Thursday through Sunday. The 2026 fall mansion tour schedule lists 10 a.m., 11 a.m., 2 p.m. and 3 p.m. starts. You need a guided-tour ticket to enter the mansion: online tickets have a $1 per-person reservation service fee, while any remaining same-day tickets at the visitor center are free. Crucially, the Lower Farm parking lot and farm-side buildings are closed for restoration work, and the upper lot has reduced capacity. Check current park alerts before traveling.

How to get a Hampton Mansion tour ticket

The mansion is not open for independent indoor sightseeing. To see its historic interiors, join a ranger-led guided tour; reserve before the trip if entering the house is your priority.

  1. Open the official Hampton National Historic Site ticket page on Recreation.gov.
  2. Choose a date and available mansion-tour time. For the fall 2026 schedule, the NPS lists four departures from Thursday through Sunday.
  3. Select one place for each visitor. Online booking adds a nonrefundable $1 reservation fee per ticket, even though the park charges no tour admission fee.
  4. Complete the reservation by 10 p.m. on the evening before the tour. Advance booking opens up to 90 days ahead.
  5. Arrive early and collect the tour ticket at the visitor center before heading to the mansion. Recreation.gov advises allowing roughly 30 minutes before the start.

Capacity matters: tours are limited to about 15 people. If you arrive without a reservation, the visitor center may issue any remaining tickets at no charge, but walk-up availability is not guaranteed. Late arrivals cannot join once a tour has entered the house. Tour hours are local Maryland time (Eastern Time).

What if there are no mansion tickets left?

You can still enjoy the publicly accessible grounds, historic gardens, landscape and self-guided material without a mansion reservation. Download the free National Park Service app before visiting and look for Hampton’s Mansion Side and Farm Side audio walks, observing every posted construction boundary. If you specifically want to see the interior, choose another tour day rather than assuming a walk-up place will open.

2026 restoration closures: what visitors need to know

This is the most important difference between a generic historical park description and an up-to-date 2026 visit plan. The NPS posted two restoration-related closure alerts in February 2026:

  • Lower Farm parking lot: closed near the Mule Barn as part of the Legacy Restoration Fund project.
  • Upper parking lot: partly closed, so fewer spaces are available than the general parking descriptions suggest.
  • Farm-side buildings: closed for construction. Do not assume the slave quarters, farm buildings or other interiors are open merely because an older travel article lists them.
  • Grounds and pathways: open portions can still be explored, but access may shift as construction progresses. Follow signs and instructions from rangers.

These alerts take precedence over general web pages describing the usual capacity or hours of all three parking areas. Before your visit, consult the NPS alerts page rather than relying on a map, older itinerary or out-of-date third-party guide.

Where to park at Hampton National Historic Site

Parking is free, but only in marked, open areas. The main lot near the Visitor Contact Station is the simplest starting point for most first-time guests. The NPS also lists an upper mansion-side lot, although its available spaces are reduced during the restoration project. Do not drive toward the closed Lower Farm lot expecting normal access.

Parking areaWhat to know in October 2026
Main lot by visitor centerBest first stop for ticket pickup, information and the walk toward the mansion
Upper mansion-side lotNearer the historic buildings, but partly closed; space is limited
Lower Farm lot near Mule BarnClosed under a restoration-project alert

The park’s stated vehicle access window is generally 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., but individual lots have their own gate restrictions. Do not park overnight, block gates or leave a vehicle on the grass along Hampton Lane. The official hours and parking page and closure notices should be your reference for exact conditions on your date.

How to drive there

Use 535 Hampton Lane, Towson, MD 21286 for directions. From Baltimore’s I-695 beltway, NPS directions say to take Exit 27B toward Dulaney Valley Road north, then turn right onto Hampton Lane; the site is roughly a mile ahead on the right. The agency also notes a bus stop near Goucher College (less than a mile away) and the Lutherville light rail stop about three miles away. Check local transit schedules before committing to a car-free visit.

Is Hampton Mansion wheelchair accessible?

The NPS accessibility update from September 2026 confirms that a mansion lift can provide access to the first floor. The second floor is not wheelchair accessible. The visitor center has accessible facilities, and designated accessible parking is normally provided in the park’s lots, although construction can affect practical routes.

Much of the historic landscape uses gravel, uneven or sloping paths. The NPS also offers virtual content that can help visitors access spaces they cannot enter in person. Contact park staff before a visit if you need details about an accessible tour route or the current status of lifts and parking. Service animals are permitted in park buildings; ordinary pets are not permitted inside, and leashed pets on grounds remain subject to park rules.

What to see in a two-hour Hampton visit

Hampton tells more than the story of an architecturally impressive mansion. The estate was once part of a vast plantation whose wealth depended on enslaved African Americans, indentured laborers and other workers. The NPS interprets those lives alongside the Ridgely family, the gardens, service buildings and agricultural landscape.

A practical first-time itinerary

  1. 0–20 minutes: Visitor Contact Station. Confirm today’s tour, pick up tickets, review current closure signs and collect a map. If you booked a tour, arrive early enough for its check-in rules.
  2. 20–80 minutes: Guided mansion tour. Allow 45–60 minutes, including the historic interiors available on your visit. Tour access depends on the reservation time and current staffing.
  3. 80–110 minutes: Gardens and mansion-side grounds. View the estate’s formal landscape and architecture while staying outside blocked areas.
  4. 110–120+ minutes: Interpretive stops. Read exhibits and, if time and routes allow, continue with the NPS app’s self-guided material. Do not count on entering the farm-side buildings during the 2026 restoration closure.

Budget more than two hours if you like photography, history exhibits or a slow outdoor walk. In summer, bring water for time spent outside; food and drinks, including water, are not permitted inside the mansion tour. Large bags and some photography accessories are also restricted indoors.

Best day to go, fees and holiday closures

Choose Thursday through Sunday if touring the mansion or speaking with rangers is important. Choose another weekday for an exterior-focused visit only if the grounds are open and you will not need visitor-center services. Check park weather alerts before leaving. The NPS lists Thanksgiving (November 26, 2026), Christmas (December 25, 2026) and New Year’s Day (January 1, 2027) as holiday closures.

There is no entrance fee for Hampton National Historic Site. That does not mean every online reservation is fee-free: Recreation.gov charges $1 per ticket for an advance mansion-tour booking. A same-day walk-up tour ticket, if available, does not carry that advance-service charge.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a reservation to visit Hampton National Historic Site?

No reservation is needed for the open grounds. You do need a tour ticket to enter the mansion, and advance booking is strongly recommended because spaces are limited.

Not on the regular fall 2026 schedule. Guided mansion tours are generally scheduled Thursday through Sunday, whereas the exterior grounds can be visited on other days within permitted pedestrian hours.

Are the slave quarters and Lower Farm buildings open?

Not during the currently posted 2026 construction closure. The NPS alert explicitly identifies farm-side building closures; check for a reopening notice before making plans around those interiors.

Is parking free?

Yes, parking in an open designated lot is free. The Lower Farm lot is closed for restoration, and the upper lot has reduced capacity in 2026.

Can wheelchair users join the mansion tour?

The NPS lists an ADA lift to the mansion’s first floor, but the second floor is not wheelchair accessible. Contact the park for the currently available route and accommodations.

What other historic houses can I visit?

If you enjoy exploring American historic homes and the stories behind them, compare the different tour and ticket systems at Longfellow House–Washington’s Headquarters in Massachusetts and the William Howard Taft National Historic Site in Ohio.

Last checked: October 15, 2026. Fall tour times, construction restrictions and booking procedures reflect official information available at that date. For updates before departure, review the Hampton NPS website and current alerts.
