Animals on Netflix: October 9 Release, Cast, Runtime and How to Watch
Quick answer (checked October 8, 2026): Animals, the political kidnapping thriller directed by and starring Ben Affleck, premieres on Netflix Friday, October 9, 2026, alongside a limited theatrical release. Kerry Washington plays his wife; the ensemble includes Gillian Anderson, Steven Yeun and Adriana Paz. Netflix’s official Tudum preview confirms the date and plot. Its Netflix title listing gives a runtime of 1 hour 48 minutes. Netflix has not committed in that announcement to a specific global minute-by-minute unlock time.
When does Animals release on Netflix?
Netflix’s official release date is Friday, October 9, 2026. That is the date attached to the film by Netflix, not a guessed date extrapolated from its trailer. Select theatrical showings also begin October 9; their schedules will depend on local cinemas.
Many Netflix originals usually appear at around midnight Pacific Time, but not every licensed or theatrically coordinated title follows exactly the same pattern. Do not treat midnight PT / 3 a.m. ET as an independently confirmed Animals-specific premiere hour. If the film is missing when you open Netflix early on October 9, check its title page, your region and the app’s refresh state rather than assuming the release was canceled.

What is Animals about? Spoiler-free plot
Mark Kimball is a Los Angeles mayoral candidate who thinks he has a path to power. When his son is kidnapped, the campaign is thrown into crisis. Mark and his wife Abigail must assemble a ransom payment while deciding whom they can trust. The situation unearths secrets and forces choices that threaten both their family and public lives.
This setup matters because the kidnapping is not simply an action-movie device. The political campaign adds questions about reputation, leverage and whose story can be believed. The film’s advance publicity focuses on the couple’s escalating moral pressure rather than revealing the full conspiracy. Spoiler-heavy posts claiming to explain the ending before the release should be treated cautiously.
Animals Netflix cast: who plays whom?
Netflix confirms Ben Affleck as Mark Kimball and Kerry Washington as Abigail Kimball. Its official announced cast also includes:
- Gillian Anderson — supporting cast; exact role details are not fully specified in the launch preview.
- Steven Yeun — supporting cast.
- Adriana Paz — supporting cast.
- Luis Gerardo Méndez — supporting cast.
- Ray Fisher — supporting cast.
- Mark Kassen — supporting cast.
- Christopher Woodley — supporting cast.
The cast list is based on Netflix’s official production preview. We have deliberately avoided attaching character names that Netflix did not publicly associate with individual actors there.
Who directed and wrote Animals?
Affleck directed the movie and worked on the script. The published screenplay credits also connect Connor O. McIntyre and Billy Ray with the project. The movie was produced in partnership with Artists Equity, the studio founded by Affleck, Matt Damon and Gerry Cardinale. Netflix identifies Affleck, Damon and Dani Bernfeld among the producers, alongside Brad Weston and Collin Creighton of Makeready.
The choice to place a troubled political candidate at the center makes this a different viewing proposition from a pure chase thriller. Audiences drawn by Affleck’s previous crime drama work should expect a tense family-and-secrets setup rather than assuming a direct sequel or shared fictional universe with any earlier film.
Why Jennifer Garner and Matt Damon aren’t the leads
In comments reported by People on October 8, Affleck discussed earlier casting ideas involving Jennifer Garner and Matt Damon. The published ensemble ultimately stars Washington opposite Affleck. These were development-stage casting changes, not an announcement that either actor appears in the final movie. Avoid casting lists that still present preliminary plans as confirmed credits.
How to watch Animals without choosing the wrong title
- Open Netflix and search the exact title Animals.
- Confirm the preview features Ben Affleck and Kerry Washington rather than another program with the same name.
- Use Netflix’s “Remind Me” control where shown on a pre-release listing.
- On October 9, verify the title is playable in your country. Licensing catalogs and age-rating displays can vary by market.
- If you prefer the theater, check local listings rather than assuming every cinema will book the limited release.
Subscriptions, download rights, subtitle choices and release timing can vary. Netflix’s page is the best place to confirm what is actually offered for your account at viewing time.
Does Animals have a trailer?
Yes. Netflix has circulated a teaser and included it in its Tudum introduction. The preview centers on the family’s threat and the personal toll of the ransom demand. Do not confuse the teaser with a full film synopsis or assume every plot twist in online “ending explained” clips is genuine.
