Quick answer (reviewed October 13, 2026): On most Android phones, open Settings > About phone, find Build number and tap it seven times. Verify your screen lock if asked. Then open Settings > System > Developer options on many Pixel-style Android devices, or look near the bottom of the main Settings screen on Samsung Galaxy phones. You do not need to install another app or root your phone.

Developer options expose tools intended mainly for app development and troubleshooting. Enabling the menu is not the same as enabling USB debugging, unlocking the bootloader or granting a computer control of your phone. Those are separate actions with different risks.

How to enable Developer options on Android

  1. Open the phone’s built-in Settings app.
  2. Select About phone or About device.
  3. Find Build number. On some brands it is under Software information or Version.
  4. Tap Build number seven times. Your device may show a countdown.
  5. Enter your device PIN, password or pattern if prompted.
  6. Return to Settings and find Developer options. Its position depends on the manufacturer.

Google documents the seven-tap method in its Android Developers device setup tutorial. Menu labels can differ between Android releases and manufacturers; use Settings search for Developer options if you cannot find it where expected.

On Google Pixel and similar Android devices

  1. Go to Settings > About phone.
  2. Scroll to Build number and tap it seven times.
  3. Authenticate if prompted.
  4. Return to Settings > System > Developer options.

If the entry does not appear, try searching Settings for its name. Google’s instructions illustrate the System menu and the actual Developer options interface; the visual arrangement is an example, not a promise that every Pixel or Android version looks identical.

On Samsung Galaxy phones

  1. Open Settings > About phone > Software information.
  2. Tap Build number seven times and confirm your PIN or other screen lock when requested.
  3. Go back to the main Settings list and look for Developer options, usually near the bottom.

Samsung’s One UI reorganizes several Android menus, so the location differs from the common Pixel path. The seven-tap activation step remains the key idea.

On other Android brands

Look for Build number under About phone, Software information or Version. Do not assume the route printed for Pixel applies to OnePlus, Xiaomi, Motorola or every tablet. Search for Build number inside Settings before downloading any third-party app that promises to unlock the menu.

What are Android Developer options used for?

The menu bundles debugging tools, display diagnostics and experimental settings. Most everyday Android users should leave their defaults alone. Here are the options people most often encounter:

SettingWhat it doesSafe default approach
USB debuggingLets a trusted computer communicate with your phone using Android Debug Bridge (ADB).Leave off unless you have a specific debugging or development task.
Wireless debuggingAllows supported Android versions to pair with development tools over a network.Leave off when not actively paired for development.
Window, Transition and Animator duration scalesAdjust the speed or duration of certain system animations.Leave at the original values unless you understand the visual trade-off.
Show taps / Pointer locationDisplay indicators for touch interactions, useful for demonstrations and diagnostics.Enable temporarily for a known purpose.
Stay awakeCan keep the display on while charging for development work.Leave off for normal daily use.
OEM unlockingControls whether bootloader unlocking may be permitted on a supported device.Do not change it for routine troubleshooting.

Availability varies by hardware, carrier, Android release and manufacturer. A missing toggle does not automatically mean your phone is broken or its software is outdated.

USB debugging versus Wireless debugging: the important difference

USB debugging is not required to browse Developer options

You can open Developer options to inspect settings without connecting the phone to a computer. Turn on USB debugging only when a legitimate development or device-support workflow calls for ADB access. When a computer asks for permission, check that it is yours and that you recognize the connection.

Android may offer Revoke USB debugging authorizations in Developer options. Use it if you no longer trust a previously approved computer. A USB cable used only for charging does not require you to approve an unknown debugging prompt.

Wireless debugging adds network considerations

On supported Android 11 and later devices, Wireless debugging can connect development tools over Wi-Fi through a pairing process. Follow the official Android Studio connection guide, avoid setting it up on networks you do not trust and turn it off after your task. Wireless debugging is not a shortcut for improving Wi-Fi speed.

Do Developer options make Android faster?

Not automatically. The popular tip to change Window animation scale, Transition animation scale and Animator duration scale from 1x to 0.5x can make transitions feel faster. It does not double the CPU speed, add RAM or guarantee better game frame rates. Some users prefer the default animations for readability or accessibility.

Keep a note of the original values before changing anything. Avoid random combinations of rendering, graphics, process-limit or battery-management switches from viral videos: they can cause glitches, use extra battery or make background apps behave unpredictably. If your phone seems slow because an app is consuming space, consult our separate Android cache and app-data guide rather than treating Developer options as a universal performance fix.

How to turn off Developer options safely

  1. Open Settings and go to Developer options.
  2. Find the main Use developer options switch near the top, if your phone provides it.
  3. Turn it Off, and then return to Settings.
  4. Check that USB debugging and Wireless debugging are no longer enabled before handing your device to someone else.

Android’s own developer-settings explainer describes turning the main switch off. The precise effects of switching the menu off, including whether every previously changed value resets, can vary by device. If you altered a particular setting, return it to its original value explicitly when possible rather than assuming that hiding the menu reversed every side effect.

Do not use Factory data reset merely to hide Developer options. A factory reset can remove personal data and is disproportionate to this task.

Developer options missing or Build number not working?

You cannot find Build number

Look under About phone > Software information or Version, and search Settings for build. Manufacturer-specific paths are a common reason a generic Android tutorial appears not to work.

Tapping Build number seven times does nothing

Check whether the menu is already enabled: open Settings search and look for Developer options. If your device belongs to a school or workplace, management restrictions may block or limit developer settings. Do not bypass organizational restrictions. Restarting the phone is a reasonable basic check if Settings is behaving abnormally; do not install unverified APKs sold as developer-mode unlockers.

Developer options appears but USB debugging is grayed out

Possible explanations include a device-management rule, an incompatible device state, manufacturer policy or settings not yet enabled with the main switch. Do not assume a website’s one-size-fits-all fix applies to your phone. If this is a work device, contact its administrator.

You want to record your screen, not debug apps

You normally do not need Developer options for built-in screen recording. See our Android screen recorder guide for Pixel and Samsung controls. Similarly, network troubleshooting such as changing DNS uses ordinary settings on many devices, as covered in our DNS settings guide.

Settings to avoid changing without a clear reason

OEM unlocking: This setting is related to whether bootloader unlocking can be allowed, not a general “boost” for your phone. Actually unlocking a bootloader can involve data loss and security consequences, and the rules vary by device. Do not enable it just because a video recommends it.

Background process limit: Arbitrarily restricting processes may break notifications or multitasking without providing reliable benefits. This is primarily a debugging control.

Force GPU rendering and graphics diagnostics: Their effects differ between Android versions and apps. They are not magic game-performance switches.

Mock location app: This is intended for controlled testing. Applications that depend on location may behave differently, and services may prohibit misleading location behavior.

Security prompts: Treat an unknown computer asking for USB debugging authorization as a real security decision, not a nuisance that must be dismissed by tapping Allow.

Frequently asked questions

Does turning on Developer options root an Android phone?

No. Exposing this settings menu does not by itself root Android, unlock the bootloader or install custom firmware. These are different technical operations.

Will enabling Developer options erase my data?

Opening the menu via Build number does not itself perform a factory reset. Dangerous changes can have separate consequences, especially around bootloader modifications, so avoid unfamiliar switches.

Is Developer options the same as Developer mode on ChromeOS?

No. ChromeOS Developer Mode and Android Developer options are distinct features with different behavior and security implications. Follow the correct instructions for your operating system.

Should I leave USB debugging enabled?

For most users, no. Enable it only during a legitimate task, authorize only trusted computers and turn it off when finished.

Why does my Samsung screen look different from screenshots online?

Samsung uses One UI rather than Google’s Pixel-style Settings interface, and manufacturers can move, rename or omit controls. Screenshots also age as operating systems change.

Do I need Developer options to install Android apps?

No. Regular Play Store installation does not depend on the Developer options menu. Do not enable debugging or OEM unlocking merely to install an ordinary app.
