Stardew Valley on PS5: Which Version to Buy, Save Transfers and Online Play
Stardew Valley is playable on PS5, but the PlayStation Store listing checked for this guide is the PS4 version. You do not need to find a separate product labeled PS5 to play it. Sony explicitly lists PS5 compatibility, subject to current console software and its backward-compatibility limitations.
The practical questions are ownership, installation, saved data and multiplayer access. A compatible game is not automatically a native PS5 upgrade, and downloading it again is not the same thing as transferring your farm.
Which version should you buy?
Check the official US PlayStation Store listing, which identifies ConcernedApe LLC as publisher and PS4 as the platform. The listing confirms that the game can run on PS5. Do not interpret the PS4 badge as an incompatibility warning.
| Your situation | What to check |
|---|---|
| You already own the digital PS4 game | Use the purchasing PlayStation account and look in Game Library before buying again. |
| You own a PS4 disc | You need compatible PS5 disc-drive hardware and must keep the disc inserted while playing. |
| Your PS5 has no usable disc drive | A disc cannot function as a digital license; check the digital edition. |
| You claimed it through a subscription | Check that account’s entitlement and membership rather than assuming the current store price applies. |
For a fuller explanation of where compatible PS4 software can be installed, see our PS5 storage guide. Keep game installation and saved-game backups separate in your planning.
How to install the digital game on PS5
- Sign in to the PlayStation account that owns the game.
- Open Game Library from the PS5 games home screen.
- Select Stardew Valley and choose Download.
- Allow the installation and available updates to finish before launching it.
These are Sony’s documented steps for installing compatible PS4 digital games on PS5. For a disc copy, insert the disc, complete any required installation and updates, and retain the disc for subsequent play.
Sony supports DualSense and DUALSHOCK 4 controllers with compatible PS4 games. That does not establish a game-specific promise of new DualSense effects, a native PS5 executable, improved resolution or a particular frame rate. Avoid buying a supposed upgrade on the strength of those assumptions.
Move your PS4 farm without losing the original
Installing the game does not necessarily copy its saved data. First confirm that your existing farm still opens on the source PS4, and keep the original save until the PS5 copy has been checked.
Sony documents several PS4-to-PS5 data-transfer options: console-to-console transfer, PS4 saved data copied through a USB drive, and cloud downloads for eligible PlayStation Plus members. Use the same account that owns the save.
Console-to-console transfer
Update both consoles, connect them to the same network and use Settings > System > System Software > Data Transfer on the destination PS5. Follow Sony’s on-screen process. Do not turn off either console or change network settings during the transfer.
Before overwriting a save
Compare timestamps and progress. If you have already started a different farm on PS5, do not replace its saved data blindly. A copy operation and a merge operation are not interchangeable. Launch Stardew Valley afterward and confirm that the expected farmer and farm appear before removing any backup.
What does PS Plus cover?
The PlayStation listing distinguishes optional online play from offline use. It lists PS Plus as required for online multiplayer, with support for up to four online players. It also lists one to four players locally. An online subscription is therefore not a requirement simply to launch a properly licensed offline single-player game.
Decide whether you need two people on one console or friends connecting from separate consoles. Those are different setups. Do not use PC instructions involving Steam invitations, Windows save folders or mod loaders to troubleshoot a PlayStation installation.
The developer’s troubleshooting page labels many of its instructions specifically for PC or Mac. Follow the platform named in each section rather than applying every suggested fix to PS5.
Fix a padlock icon before reinstalling everything
A padlock can indicate a license or account problem rather than broken game files. Confirm the purchasing account first. Then follow Sony’s license-restoration instructions: open Settings > Users and Accounts > Other > Restore Licenses and select the relevant license. Sony also documents restoring a license through a game’s Options menu.
Restoring licenses does not erase saved data. It does not create an ownership entitlement you never had or renew an expired subscription. If the game remains locked, identify whether the entitlement came from a purchase, disc or subscription before taking more disruptive steps.
| Problem | First check | Avoid |
|---|---|---|
| Game missing from your library | The account used for the original purchase | Buying another copy before checking ownership |
| Farm missing after installation | Whether saved data transferred, not just the application | Deleting the only original save |
| Disc cannot be used | Whether the console has compatible disc-drive hardware | Assuming a disc provides a redeemable digital license |
| Online session unavailable | Membership, account restrictions and platform-specific support | Copying Windows-only fixes onto a console |
Frequently asked questions
Does a PS4 label mean Stardew Valley cannot run on PS5?
No. Read the compatibility statement as well as the platform badge. The official listing checked here explicitly permits PS5 play.
Should I buy the game again when moving consoles?
First check your existing license on the correct account. A hardware change alone is not a reason to make a second purchase.
Does this guide claim a hands-on PS5 performance test?
No. It verifies platform, installation and account instructions against the developer and Sony’s documentation. It makes no measured frame-rate or loading-time claims.
Documentation checked October 23, 2026. Store editions, menus and subscription entitlements can change; verify the current official listing before purchasing.
