Baseball Mercy Rule Explained (2026): Little League 8-, 10- and 15-Run Rules

Quick answer: A baseball mercy rule—more often called the run rule—ends a game early when one team leads by a specified number of runs after a minimum number of innings. The exact threshold depends on the league. For Little League Baseball and Softball, the standard main-division rule recognizes 15 runs after three innings, 10 runs after four innings, and an optional eight-run rule after five innings in the regular season. The home-team timing can be half an inning earlier. Major League Baseball has no ordinary mercy rule in its standard games.

Baseball mercy rule: quick comparison

These Little League thresholds and the home/visiting-team distinctions are documented by Little League’s official rule explanation. If you’re scoring an actual game, the official competition rulebook, local regulations and umpire’s ruling—not a general web article—control the result.

How the Little League run rule works, with score examples

Example 1: The home team leads 12–2 after 3½ innings

The visiting team has completed the top of the fourth, and the home team has already batted three times. With a 10-run home-team advantage, the 10-run rule may end the game before the home team bats in the bottom of the fourth. This is why references commonly state “four innings, or three and a half if the home team is ahead.”

Example 2: The visiting team leads 15–0 after the third inning

If the visiting side has reached a 15-run advantage, the home side must still receive its appropriate opportunity to bat. The rule cannot be enforced against the home team before its required turn. If the differential still meets the rule after that opportunity, the run rule applies.

Example 3: The score is 9–1 after five innings

An eight-run lead meets the optional eight-run regular-season threshold where adopted, but you should not call a tournament game over simply because you saw an eight-run margin. Confirm which Little League competition rules govern the matchup.

Example 4: MLB is ahead 16–1 in the eighth

The score does not trigger an MLB run rule. Standard major league games continue under ordinary innings, weather, and regulation-game provisions rather than a fixed blowout threshold.

What changes when the home team is ahead?

Because the home team bats second, a game may be over once the visiting team has finished its half of the relevant inning and the home team already has the qualifying margin. In some situations the home team can reach the necessary lead while batting and the game ends under the run-rule walk-off provisions. Conversely, if the visiting team takes a large lead, the home team normally gets its turn to respond. The same principle appears in Little League’s 8-, 10- and 15-run rule guidance.

Regular season vs. tournament: don’t assume the same rule

Little League allows local organizations to make choices about using run rules in regular-season divisions within its official framework. For official Little League International tournament play, the published tournament regulations include mandatory 10- and 15-run provisions, while the regular-season optional eight-run rule is not automatically carried over. Tournament age divisions can change when the run thresholds come into force. Read your division’s current tournament regulations before declaring a result.

What is not a mercy rule?

  • An inning run cap: Some youth formats limit the runs a team may score in a single half-inning. That is a separate local playing rule, not necessarily a game-ending run rule.
  • Calling a game for weather: Rain, darkness or unsafe field conditions can shorten an otherwise regulation game, regardless of score.
  • A walk-off: The home team can win in its last turn by taking the lead; a run-rule walk-off instead involves reaching a defined scoring margin.
  • A forfeit: A forfeit follows an eligibility, conduct or participation rule; it is not simply an excessive lead.

Checklist for coaches, parents and scorekeepers

  1. Identify the league, age division, date and whether the game is regular season or tournament.
  2. Read the relevant current rules and check whether optional provisions were adopted.
  3. Record which team is home, the completed inning and the run differential.
  4. Give the home team the required batting opportunity when the visitors are ahead.
  5. Check any pitching, mandatory-play or regulation-game consequences with the umpire and local administrators.

FAQ

Is the baseball mercy rule always 10 runs?

No. Ten runs is a familiar example, but Little League recognizes different thresholds at different innings, and other competitions can use different rules—or none.

Is there a mercy rule in Major League Baseball?

No fixed lead causes a standard MLB game to end early.

Does the visiting team have to let the home team bat?

Where the visiting team leads, the home team must receive the required turn at bat under the applicable run rule.

Is the eight-run rule used in every Little League game?

No. It is an optional regular-season provision, not an automatic universal standard.

Can a game that ends under the run rule still be official?

Yes. Little League recognizes an appropriately completed run-rule game as a regulation game; coaches should still check all tournament and pitching eligibility provisions.
