How to Turn Off Active Status on Instagram (Mobile and Desktop)
To turn off active status on Instagram, open your profile, tap the three-line menu, choose Messages and story replies, open Show activity status, and switch the setting off. That hides the green online dot and the “Active now” or “Active [time] ago” indicators from people who would otherwise see them. The trade-off is that you also lose the ability to see other people’s activity status.
Turn off Instagram active status on iPhone and Android
- Open Instagram and sign in to the account you want to change.
- Tap your profile picture in the lower-right corner.
- Tap the menu with three horizontal lines in the upper-right corner.
- Scroll to How others can interact with you and select Messages and story replies.
- Open Show activity status.
- Switch Show activity status to Off.
Instagram occasionally adjusts menu labels and placement. If you cannot find the option, use the search field in Settings and activity and search for “activity status.” The control is tied to your Instagram account, not to a particular phone brand.
Turn off Instagram active status on a computer
- Open the official Instagram website and sign in.
- Select More or the settings option in the left-side menu.
- Open Settings, then navigate to the privacy area for Messages and story replies.
- Select Show activity status and turn the toggle off.
- If the website’s layout differs, use the mobile app’s account settings to make the same change.
You do not need a third-party browser extension, modified app or password-sharing service to hide this indicator.
What actually changes when active status is off?
| Instagram feature | After you turn Activity Status off |
|---|---|
| Green online dot | Hidden from people who could otherwise see your presence |
| “Active now” label | Hidden |
| “Active 10m ago” or similar | Hidden |
| Seeing other people’s online status | Also disabled for you |
| Sending and receiving direct messages | Still works |
| Posting and viewing stories | Still works |
| Story view list | Not controlled by this toggle |
| Read receipts | Separate setting; not automatically disabled |
| Comments and likes | Not hidden by Activity Status |
Turning off the green dot is useful when you want fewer assumptions about your availability. But it is not a complete “invisible mode.” Other users can still notice posts, comments, profile changes and interactions they are entitled to see.
Can you hide your Instagram status from one person?
The main Activity Status switch applies broadly; Instagram doesn’t provide a separate choose-one-person list in this setting. If you need to manage interaction with a specific account, consider Restrict, blocking, or controlling messages depending on the situation. Those actions are different from switching off Activity Status and have their own effects.
For the distinctions between message requests, hidden comments, restriction and blocking, see our Instagram Restrict explained guide. Don’t assume Restrict alone makes every sign of your online activity disappear.
What about read receipts and story viewers?
Activity Status and read receipts answer different questions. The online indicator tells someone when your account appears active. A read receipt may indicate that you opened a particular message. Turning off online presence does not inherently turn off message read receipts. Instagram has separate controls for read receipts where available. Review them independently if your goal is to reduce how much of your messaging activity others can see.
Likewise, opening someone’s story can register your view according to Instagram’s story-view mechanics even while your green-dot status is hidden. Being offline in the messaging presence sense is not the same as private browsing.
Why are people still seeing you as online?
You switched the setting on a different account
If you manage more than one Instagram profile, check the username in the app before changing preferences. Test the relevant account instead of assuming all accounts share one activity setting.
The other person is noticing recent interactions, not your status indicator
Someone may infer you are active because you just replied, posted or viewed content. The Activity Status toggle does not conceal those normal account actions.
The interface hasn’t refreshed
Close the app and reopen it. Ask a trusted contact to check whether they still see the actual green dot or last-active label, rather than trying to infer presence from your messages.
The option moved in an app update
Open Settings and activity and search for Activity Status or look under Messages and story replies. Avoid instructions that claim one path is identical across every version of Android, iOS and the web.
How to turn active status back on
Follow the same steps—Profile → Menu → Messages and story replies → Show activity status—and turn the switch back on. Other eligible accounts may once again see when you’re active or were recently active; you will regain access to their activity indicators as supported by Instagram.
Privacy choices beyond the green dot
- Audit who can message you and whether unwanted requests are routed to the request folder.
- Review the audience for your stories and close-friends content.
- Check any public information in your bio that reveals more than you intended.
- Use Restrict or Block when you want to reduce interaction with a particular person.
- Keep the app updated and avoid “secret offline mode” services that request your password.
These steps address different privacy concerns; none turns Instagram into a zero-trace app.
Frequently asked questions
If I hide active status, can I still see who is online?
No. Instagram’s visibility control works both ways.
Does Instagram tell people I turned it off?
There is no special announcement; the visible online and last-active indicators stop appearing to them. They may still infer that you are around from your posts or replies.
Can someone still message me?
Yes. Hiding active status does not prevent DMs.
Does hiding active status hide read receipts?
No. Message read receipts are a separate feature and require their own settings where available.
Do I have to change the setting every time I log in?
Normally it remains an account preference until you change it. Verify it again after significant app or account changes if privacy is important to you.
